I saw this paperclip image in the galleries and I was impressed with it. So,.... I thought I'd try it myself and it's not a trivial as it appears. I did this in 35 minutes. All spline in Carrara. Amapi would have naturally done a better job with the model but this isn't too bad. Let's see what we get. -Kix

Nice challenge (although there are spline paperclips in the browser tray aren't there?). This is a vertex version and the straight one took less than ten minutes.

Yes, there are paperclips in the browser but you have to make your own! -Kix

Thanks Kix... this is just what I needed to get motivated again while waiting for C4. :-) I did the sweep path in Illustrator, then imported into the Spline Modeler. Long Live the Spline Modeler!!! Still my modeler of choice... although I promise I will give Amapi a try when it arrives with my upgrade. Chuck

Seen here in its most useful configuration. Straightened to reset your PalmIII or remove a CD from the stuck tray etc., etc. 10min!

Did this in the spline modeller... just about 10 minutes exactly from the time I opened a new file to the time I clicked 'render'. Thanks for the challenge... makes me glad that I saved that money by not getting Lightwave... 8D

What happens when you leave your paper clip in the car to long when its a metaball model? I know...I could have done a better one in the VM or SM but I wanted to give it a go. Only took like 2 minutes, probally could have done better if I took my time, but I'm in a hurry.

Here's mine. Created using the Vertex modeler. Does anyone know why there are streaks in the shadow? I've played around using different settings but can't get rid of them.

Isn't time these paperclips were put to good use? ;-)

falconperigot ( ) posted Sun, 24 October 2004 at 4:44 PM

keithw, have you tried turn off Interpolation?

Keith, What kind of soft shadows are you using and how did you set up your render? Falcon, great idea! And just to show how much I liked TOXE's image, I tried it myself. I can never get AGrows to put tip objects on so I had to scramble them up myself. -Kix

Figured out my problem with the steaky shadow. I increased the shadow buffer resoulution from 256x256 to 512x512 and the streaks went away.

Kixum ( ) posted Sun, 24 October 2004 at 11:23 PM

Glad you figured it out! If you have C3 (and hopefully later), you can go to raytraced soft shadows which are much better in bejuckets of ways. -Kix

takes kixums mouse away BAD! When I was younger my mom used to work as a paralegal. I'd sometimes go to work with her when I was sick and home from school. I'd take all of her paper clips and string them together, and of course when done, put them back in the paperclip tray....imagine her surprise when she'd try and take one out:)

Possibly because of the upcoming election my clips decided to get together and make a patriotic gesture. Here is the result. Remember Kixum started it ;-)

Ehehe, really nice! I hope that the clips will make the right choice:-) -TOXE

Hey, Nicholas86, I love yours! I don't know what exactly I'm looking it, but I know what I like.

Nicholas86 ( ) posted Mon, 25 October 2004 at 12:12 PM

HEHE! I was just goofing around renderer. Trying to use the metaball modeler for once. I'm sure if I took my time it would look nicer.

Nicholas86 Looks like a paper clip from DOOM 3!
