Subject: mapping textures onto animals

rps53 ( ) posted Wed, 27 October 2004 at 6:46 PM ยท edited Sun, 12 January 2025 at 3:43 AM

Hello, There are plenty of animal meshes to download for free, but only rarely is a texture map provided. One possibility is drawing some kind of texture in Photoshop myself and mapping it onto the animal. Fitting the picture onto the animal so that the center is along the midline of the animal, it is scaled correctly etc. is extremely hard by trial and error. Can someone point me to a tutorial on the subject or have some advice about it? Thanks, RPs53

To make it easier there is a program called UVMapper out - free in the standard version. You might want to look at that, could be a big help in what you trying to do. Ah, you find the link in the Backroom i think.

I did download UVMapper and try. Looks interesting, and I appreciate your help here. The major issue is that most free downloads are .3ds or .lwo or .dxf, not the .obj required by UVMapper. Now if there were a free utility to convert these things, I'd like to hear about it. Thanks

Look into free modellers like Wings3D or Amorphium 1.0. From Amorphium i know for sure that it can open 3DS files and export them to obj. But check others out as well. Maybe you find one that does what you need. I think you find links to those programs as well in the Backromm here.
