Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Jan 20 7:34 am)
I finally got the low-res version tweaked to look reasonable, which is what the picture above is.
Now, there are some slight differences in the American models, but the flip-cap versions are legal, except in California.
Rumour has it that when the US wanted copies of the German can, some efforts were made to "improve" the design. The new version leaked. Oops. There have been variations in the pattern of the stiffening ribs.
But the Germans apparently didn't come up with the original design.

Anoth history page, which attributes ythe original design to the Italians. Well, they did have troops in North Africa long before the war, and they needed something like that, so it's not a crazy suggestion.Meanwhile, in one of those "Doh" moments, I remembered displacement maps in Poser 5.

This shows, from left to right, a picture of a real jerrycan, the body of the version I'm currently working from, and the low-quality version I completed earlier.
Getting that seam around the body was a fiddling job, and I think that the Poser rendering is making a difference, compared to what I see in the modelling program.
That seam is why the spout is off-centre.
I also did a quick render of the low-quality version, several stacked together. It'd be OK lurking in the background of a scene.
And a question for you: which country first used the Jerry Can?
