THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Unfortunately, Robby DOES have spyware. Please read

draculaz ( ) posted Sun, 31 October 2004 at 11:27 PM ยท edited Fri, 08 November 2024 at 8:36 AM

It has been discovered by LunarTick (to whom I would officially like to apologize and thank at the same time) that the file uninstall.exe that is created in the installation of my 01001001, Robot freebie is indeed corrupted with something called Diablo Keys. This is not something that shows up on Spybot SD or Ad-Aware searches, which is why I never had any idea about it until today. Diablo keys is a keylogger (read: it logs everything you type). This is the extent of the bad news. The good news is that that this bit of spyware seems not to be activated, and the fix is quite simple, without the need to delete the bryce file or whatever. All you have to do is to go into: Drive: Program Files: Corel: Bryce: Presets: Objects: ROBOTv2 Delete the file uninstall.exe. That's it. I'm currently coming up with a new installer now that my own system is free of this threat and will be overwriting the old file with a new one. Obviously, my abject apologies on the matter. I like to keep my system clean as a whistle. I didn't have SpySweeper until today, Spybot and Adaware not picking up on it. Mihnea

LunarTick ( ) posted Sun, 31 October 2004 at 11:39 PM

Mihnea no need to apologize mate, i'm just glad i was able to bring it to yours and everyone elses attention. I run both spysweeper and spybot for that purpose, one will find something the other doesn't. Another simple fix is, Export Robby(name it Robby) from Bryce, delete Robby from the create/user library then go into control panel/add-remove and remove the 01001001, Robot v2 from there then import the Robby.obj back into bryce.

draculaz ( ) posted Sun, 31 October 2004 at 11:44 PM

i've changed the exe on my site with a zip file that was previously for mac users as a quick fix. when AS looks up the freebies , he can give the go-ahead for the new download. i'm scanning the system again now hoping that hte zip file itself won't have this kind of problem. drac

fingers crossed. Anyway the image is to put a smile on your face. I actually named it Ode to Robbie LOL

just checked, it's not robby that has the problem, it's the installer. those rat bastards :/

LunarTick ( ) posted Mon, 01 November 2004 at 12:02 AM

drac, put it up as a freebie in the .obj format. i just zipped it and the file size is almost 2 megs smaller than the one already on there. the setup.exe is 17.1mb the Robby.obj zip file is 15.9mb.

Mahray ( ) posted Mon, 01 November 2004 at 12:16 AM

Be careful of false positives, Spysweeper thinks I have "Kitten Free S** Dialer" in my registry, comes from a program that I'm 99% sure isn't a dialer. (It hasn't ever tried to call home).

Ardiva ( ) posted Mon, 01 November 2004 at 12:18 AM

Sorry to hear that, drac. I had Robby but lost him when my C:drive took a dump on me. Glad to see that another great one of him will be put up in the freebies. :)

LunarTick ( ) posted Mon, 01 November 2004 at 12:30 AM

Mahray not all dialers will call home or the pizza shop, be careful my friend my girlfriend had one that allowed someone to use her internet connection to bounce off. She received a nasty email from some company in Japan about something she was ment to be doing to their computer system. Oh the only thing she can hack is the meat we have on sunday when we have a roast dinner.

lol@LT

LunarTick ( ) posted Mon, 01 November 2004 at 1:05 AM

Sorry Mahray, just been corrected by the girlfriend, it wasn't a dialer she had on her computer it was another form of trojan.

draculaz ( ) posted Mon, 01 November 2004 at 1:09 AM

your gf is wise :D

Rayraz ( ) posted Mon, 01 November 2004 at 5:29 AM

ugh, people BEWARE OF DIALERS!! I've been working 2 weeks now to clean shit off my pc and it is NOT FUN!! I am having serious lack of sleep from being behind my pc till 4am night in night out trying to get rid of everything. I manually cleaned registers, ran a TON of tools and virusscanners and everything, and it's still not clean. Especially beware of trojan downloaders, if you've got those you can clean out trojans till Bush poses for Playboy 'cause for every trojan you delete, new ones will be downloaded to replace them.

Ray see if you can get spysweeper and try that, you also might want to try rebboting with spybot still running so it scans and removes anything when your system boots up.

I know there are some spyware and malware(not much heard on this) that can't be removed by spybot unless you reboot with it still running.

PS: you can get spysweeper from that link

Message edited on: 11/01/2004 05:55 PSS: After reading your post before your last one Ray i hope you haven't got Malware(malicious ware) on your system because there is only one sure way of removing that and thats to format your harddrive. I have been hit with Malware 4-5 times now in the past 2 years.

If I save Robby in a br5 file and do the remove thingy will he still be in that file so I don't have to redownload him?

Mahray ( ) posted Mon, 01 November 2004 at 6:11 AM ยท edited Mon, 01 November 2004 at 6:13 AM

@Ang25 - That should work, then just put him back in your create pallette afterwards.

I've also had problems with *ware, often booting into safe mode and running various scans is the only way to be sure. Besides, the one spythingy detected was a registry key, so nothing conclusive.

Rayraz.... go to the link and download HijackThis. It is free ware. Very good program for finding BS in your system. I use it regularly....

There are 10 kinds of people: Those who know binary, and those who don't.ย

Rayraz ( ) posted Mon, 01 November 2004 at 8:55 AM

I've got HijackThis already use it regularly too :) In fact I just used it this morning to clean some shit from my dad's pc :) But according to HijackThis there's nothing on my system at the moment that's not supposed to be there.

kiwi_gg ( ) posted Mon, 01 November 2004 at 11:44 AM

Best way I have Found to deal with that sort of stuff is to burn every thing you need to keep to CD,dump the whole OS,reformat and re-install. Has the advantage of getting rid of a lot of other leftovers and crap that remains from installing and un-installing programs. Big job I know but I do it every few months just for the extra performance I get out of doing so. Also use Spybot,Adaware,Zonealarm along with Norton AV. Cheers GG.

WHO said Kiwi's can't Fly ?????

Rayraz ( ) posted Mon, 01 November 2004 at 1:24 PM

yea I think I should just install that new 200gb drive I bought copy my 100gb of important data onto it, format my 120GB stipe and re-install windows on it :)

Another tip for spyware removal, I work, during the summer, at University of Notre Dame removing mal/spy etc. ware from students computers for the upcoming year, my father also works at this year round, when you are running spybot and adaware and spysweeper etc, make sure you pull your network connection/phoneline or whatever else. Certian peices of spyware will actually corrupt adaware or spybot or even norton/mcafee, turning them into mal ware of some sort, this is always done upon removing them, they have keys in the registry that detect when you kill them then go ou and download the real bad guy by themselves. if you pull the cable when you uninstall everything and only put it back when you are totally finished and have reboooted 2x, then that wont happen, and the mopre annoying spyware wont redownload itself either. I'm done talking now.

Rayraz ( ) posted Mon, 01 November 2004 at 4:04 PM

also, try blocking system restore and booting to safe-mode before running any scanners. Btw, how do I find out if my AdAware, Spybot and Norton are corrupted? and more importantly, how do I fix them?

TobinLam ( ) posted Mon, 01 November 2004 at 6:02 PM

When you go out to download spyware removal software be sure it is the real thing. There are lots of programs that claim to clean your system but give a lot of false positives and some even install their own stuff.

MoonGoat ( ) posted Mon, 01 November 2004 at 6:24 PM

You guys really need to discover ad-aware.

Erlik ( ) posted Mon, 01 November 2004 at 6:40 PM ยท edited Mon, 01 November 2004 at 6:42 PM
  1. Don't use Internet Explorer, at least not if you don't make it safer in Internet Options.
  2. Possibly not even then. :D
  3. Start -> Run -> type msconfig. Then go to Services and check what's booting up with your Windows. Stop it.
  4. Reboot in Safe Mode and go dig through Registry to remove each and every mention of TrekBlue or Spyware Nuker. Notice which files and directories are mentioned and afterwards kill them dead.

This is the link to the page with descriptions of fake spyware removal programs.

Ray, connect to the Internet, open Ad-aware and/or Spybot, click on Update and see whether anything happens. Also, press Ctrl+Alt+Del and in Task Manager go to processes and see whether the programs are running. AFAIK, spyware and trojans don't corrupt such programs, they stop them working.

Anyway, to fix them, you have to first remove the spyware, deinstall the programs and install them again.

BTW, what you posted up there looks more like memory addresses than spyware names. Search doesn't find anything.

There are currently four peices of malware that do corrupt norton spy bot and adaware, its been like three months though so i do not remember their names, my apologies.

Rayraz ( ) posted Mon, 01 November 2004 at 7:25 PM

the things mentioned were found by the free scan on spysweepers site. they are still "being researched"
