Well uh... yes. I've often wondered about some of the things you've said, especially since they are up in relative public view for many years until all the backups go offline. I've chalked a lot of it up to youthful indiscretion, and so do most other people. The first time I was punched in the nose what people said about me lost a lot of it's power. Most of it rolls off like water on a duck's back. What you say doesn't matter until it matters. It's only an issue if someone is either genuinely offended or thinks they can use it to their advantage and takes enough action to cause trouble. Unfortunately in politics the second type is more prevalent. There are people who will not be offended by what you have said but will see it as a tool to remove you from their way to the top. The good news is everyone has skeletons in their closet. Yours are kind of puny so far. If you are in politics two years and no one threatens to kill you need to get out. Obviously you are not doing your job. Don't concentrate on what you said. Instead concentrate on who you know. You are certainly able to make friends (and Enemies). It's the friends that can get you in and keep you in. Don't be so concerned about what you said just be ready for it. What you say will come back. (Yes Mr. Minister I did say the country stank, but remember your opponent in the X party was running things at the time). The final thing is to remember that a diplomat does not fight whole-heartedly for what he believes; he fights whole-heartedly for what his government says. Colin Powell publicly expressed misgivings about Saddam but he spent a year convincing other countries that we should invade. He knew that Saddam hadn't rebuilt and he knew the administration knew. The unvoiced reason was Saddam was beaten. The US spared his life and he continued to defy UN inspectors. The US was tired of losing face by letting this beaten man dictate terms. It may not be of that scope but you will be asked to lie whole heartedly because your government does not wish to make it's real reasons public. If you can do that about something you are morally opposed to then you have a future in diplomacy.
Very true words, Mr. Glyph. A lousy diplomat thinks they need only to make everyone happy (obviously, this hasn't exactly been the case with Drac) while, as Mr. Glyph said, a good one fights to support what the government thinks should be done to make something better. There is no political left/right denial of this, it's just agreed upon. Great example with Colin Powell, even if he is a republican.
electroglyph, maybe you and i have other definitions of what's proper to post on an online forum. there is no youthful indiscretion in telling my friends that i got a job with the romanian government. i don't recall ever saying exactly what it was, or how i got it, or what the process was like, safe of a few grumbles on the government being slow in accepting a diploma. i am aware these posts will stay online for years, but they are not readily accesible through any search engine (certainly not through google). no one will ever bother, in the end, especially since this forum has to do with a completely unrelated hobby. it's the comments people make, a la "but you're a diplomat, you're not supposed to tell me to bugger off" that annoy me, because they draw undue attention to me and to whatever position i might have. so yeah, that's my beef, but since i realize that i've allowed you all into my other life, i'd rather have it all cease rather than ask you to stop replying to information you didn't ultimately ask to read. i think that's pretty normal and common-sensish :) Drac (yes, common sensish)
Someone said, "they draw undue attention to me and to whatever position i might have" When someone tells you he's a dentist, you immediately look at his teeth. When someone tells you he's the president of the hair club for men, you look to see if he's wearing a rug. Just Human nature. Your secret is safe with us, err.. what was your name again?

No more talky about the diplo stuff from now on. I need to turn into a wretched paranoid because you never know what problems might pop up. I mean you can make cracks about how the country's going to hell and what not, but don't have my nick and any permutation of the words diplomacy, politics, and/or job in the same setence. Thanks. You just never know, I mean lately I've been told even to be careful what I can say over the phone and so on. Drac
