Subject: Model object while viewing the rest... (newbie)

ikercito ( ) posted Sun, 07 November 2004 at 12:04 PM · edited Fri, 13 December 2024 at 2:50 AM

Hiya! Can I model an object (or edit the mesh) while viewing the rest of objects in the scene? When I change the view to the model window to edit the mesh, the rest of objects present in the scene dissapear so I only see the mesh I'm going to edit... I need to fit a shoulderbag to a human figure and I need to view both the strap and the body, so the strap doesn't run into the insides of the body... How can I do it? Thanks!! Ike.

Amapi will do that? Jeez, I can't afford a license for it... isn't there another workaround for the problem? I don't know... grouping the figure and the bag and then.... gosh... I don't know. Any other (cheaper) solution? Thx.

If you are working in the vertex modeller and want to use a program with similar functionality give Wings3D a try. It is great. Somethings take a while to get used to but it is a very good modeller.

Amapi 6 is free in 3D World mag #57. Copies can still be found on bookstore shelves in the US.

Thanks guys, I just thought there might be some simple trick to do the job, but as I see, I'm gonna have to use some other software. I don't live in the US, so the 3D World mag possibility is kinda closed. I'll look at Wings3D and see what I get... Are you sure there are no magical tricks for this? :D Thx. Ike.

Ike, I'm unclear on your question I guess. It is possible to see the rest of the scene using the Preview Window. You can divide up just like the regular assembly window too. Is this what you mean? Mark

FWTempest ( ) posted Sun, 07 November 2004 at 11:37 PM

exactly, Mark... like you I must be missing something here... there is a preview window at the bottom of the properties tray in the lower right corner of the screen... although it's rather small, you can use the camera controls to zoom in, out, up, down, dolly, etc... no tricks, no plugs for other software...

Also, you can enlarge the preview window by dragging the handles.

Great great great!! That's it! Exactly what I wanted! I never cared much about the preview window but this time I gotta say that it saved my life! Thanks Mark and everyone... I Ike.

I've recently started using it a lot for poser clothes.... I'm going to have to remember that you can resize it and divvy it up...

MarkBremmer ( ) posted Mon, 08 November 2004 at 9:03 AM

Don't forget, you can also manipulate objects in the assembly room scene through the preview window - very useful for repostioning!

rendererer ( ) posted Mon, 08 November 2004 at 10:32 AM

Wow, I had no idea you could split the preview window. That's great. Not a great as a normal modeling environment would be, but great in its own way.

I really dont know why I did not think of that!

ayodejiosokoya ( ) posted Mon, 08 November 2004 at 4:07 PM

What is this darn 'newbie' tag next to my name. I hate that word!!!

bluetone ( ) posted Tue, 09 November 2004 at 8:11 AM

The 'newbie' next to your name is from the post headline, NOT an indication of YOU or your abilities... You can always change it when you make a post... :D

ikercito ( ) posted Tue, 09 November 2004 at 8:20 AM

I'm the newbie here! And I'm not gonna let anybody take that title off me! I'm a newbie and I'm proud of it... :D

bluetone ( ) posted Tue, 09 November 2004 at 8:27 AM

As we all are at one point... and compared to many on this forum, I still am too! :D OK folks... raise your hand if your a newbie! (waiting...) Come on now... it's best to admit it and move on to the all the fun things we can learn... (still waiting...) Well then... maybe if we offer cookies and milk? ;)

I'm a newbie! :-) Seriously, I think we all learn from each other; that's what's great about a forum like this.

Ah silly me! :) That hand is really cool btw!

GWeb ( ) posted Tue, 09 November 2004 at 10:49 PM

I wonders if I can take the preview out of panel and put it in one of my monitor? (Dual Monitor)

bluetone ( ) posted Wed, 10 November 2004 at 10:15 AM

i would imagaine that you can't... BUT... you CAN take the whole properties panel and put IT on your 2nd monitor, and then stretch it out to a larger size to see what your doing. HTHs! :D
