Subject: The "Hot 20" - What it is - and what it is not...

LillianH ( ) posted Wed, 10 November 2004 at 2:22 PM ยท edited Wed, 25 December 2024 at 12:42 PM

Hello everybody, There has been quite a bit of controversy surrounding the "Hot 20" feature in the galleries. We would like to thank everyone that has taken the time to share their concerns, insights and suggestions regarding this area. We appreciate it being brought to our attention. As a team, we think it would be helpful to clarify...What is the purpose of the "Hot 20"? The "Hot 20" is for entertainment purposes only. It is so members can vote for images they like, if they wish to do so. Not because someone asked them to. It is not a competition, a challenge or a contest. Members are strongly discouraged from soliciting votes as this practice alienates other members. It is one thing to enjoy being in the "Hot 20" when the votes are genuine and come from someone that decides on their own to vote for an image. It is another thing entirely to actively recruit votes in order to get an image in. I hope this sheds some light on what the "Hot 20" is and what it is not. We will continue to monitor this area. Best regards, LillianH Renderosity Marketing & Promotions

Lillian, what it is is a waste of time and webspace. Get rid of it. It serves no function aside from derision on this board, and the joke has long gone stale. Just delete the damn thing and put it out of its misery.

Hi SeanMartin, I understand where you are coming from. Don't think it hasn't crossed our minds. It still may come to that. However, there are many members that do like this feature and want to keep it. So, we will give the opportunity for it to remain and to achieve the ideal it was designed for. If members see an outstanding image and vote for it, based on the merit of the artwork, that's great! That's the idea. To only vote on friends images, or to trade votes, buy votes, or demand votes, is missing the point. We will see what happens. Thanks, Lillian

I would vote to get rid of it as well. While there are good items to be found in it sometimes, it just seems to cliquesh. I would much prefer a moderators spotlight instead. -thanks- Kirsten

The "idea" of the Hot 20 is great, but unfortunately, it's nothing better than a High School popularity contest and so it has lost it's true intention.

LOL, this debate has been ongoing for about 2 years now (maybe longer). My advice to everybody is just forget about it and create and show your work when you want to. Some people will like it and some won't, but the main thing is that you like it and are proud to show it off. Hugs to you all! Carol

My idea of rebooting is kicking somebody in the butt twice!

The "Hot20" is way overrated. :)

Why anyone would make their goal in art to be in the Hot20 (esp. in this "community") is beyond me.

When people solicit votes (which by looking at the Hot20 at random times is easy to conclude) it destroys the purpose. At this point I feel that the Hot20 is broken. If something is broken... normally you would fix it.... right? I'm not saying that the way to fix it is throw away the Hot20... but if that is the only answer than I don't see why deleting it would be such a tragedy.

Just a reminder that we do still produce the "Moderators' Picks" in the Poser Backroom (look under "Top Images" in the menu). The Backroom is accessible by clicking the banner at the top of the forum page :)

I say get rid of it! When I joined it was all good.. the Hot20 was something to aspire to..to be inspired by.. now.. it's just a joke.. I take it as an insult when I get into it.. and this thread won't help with the voting for friends issue.. People will still vote for their friends..so it's nothing but a "who's got the most friends list"

I enjoy being able to vote for an image I like. I guess what I do more now is add it to my own favorites page. It is really sad to try and manipulate the results. The 'net seems to attract a lot of that kind of thinking.

Gee, I never even knew there were moderators' picks in the Backroom. Very cool. Bookmarked it, so I'll remember to check it regularly.

I agree with a spotlight idea. Set it up to spotlight the galleries of various users (not AOM) per month. If that isn't feasible get rid of it.

I like the idea of the "Hot 20" picked by the moderators. I never realized there was a Back Room and going to look at it now.

I do find the "Hot 20" seems to have the same old same old in it, but it is an insite to view works you may have skipped past! For once, sometimes, the little person who does a humble image would be nice viewed in there or summit along the lines! but yes a mods selection, or of such would be nice! and viewing the pose backroom, it seems a little out of date :S but ahh well!

I like voting on pictures I like, but lately they don't seem to get into the hot 20. I don't like the idea of just having the mods doing the picking either. So I guess I'm saying leave it up. I do not like to hear that there are cheaters and blackmailers hunting for votes. :O(

I think the biggest problem with the "Poser" Hot 20 is that it is usually the "Heavily post-worked in Photoshop" Hot 20.

FlyByNight ( ) posted Thu, 11 November 2004 at 5:22 PM ยท edited Thu, 11 November 2004 at 5:32 PM

I agree, Sway, which leaves no room for those who don't postwork but still do good work. They should have a Photoshop Hot 20. And I'd like to add that I have nothing against postworked images, some are quite beautiful, but they are not a true representation of what Poser can do.

milamber42 ( ) posted Thu, 11 November 2004 at 7:18 PM

Why not just base it on the number of times an image is viewed (like it was, long before the voting and the Pink Pony) and change the name to "20 Most Viewed". As it stands now, the Hot 20 is useless to me. The Poser gallery is the most popular and has 100+ images posted to it a day. I hardly look at the gallery, because I don't have the time. Changing the list to the 20 Most Viewed would at least give people a way to look at a sampling of what everyone else thought was interesting enough to view.

randym77 ( ) posted Thu, 11 November 2004 at 7:24 PM

If it's based on the number of times an image is viewed, the only cheesecake pics would make the Hot 20. "Only the tits get the hits."

I never posted anything and no I do not have a gallery but I say "GET RID OF IT"!!! Who needs it? NO ONE!!! This is the only way to be fair to everyone.. The Hot20 in Poser is more less the Hot20 postworked to death... The other Hot20's are not far from doing the same thing if you think about it... So "WHERE's the challenge"?!?!... Isn't that what it use to say on the Poser Header!?!?... As it is now, each member has the ability to add his/her own favorite artist to his/her favorites list... so let them add it... and drop the stupid hoopla over who is in the damn Hot20.... That way their friends and little followers will still know their work is loved... or that their S.O.S.D.D. works are still being seen by their 'I'll scratch your back if you'll scratch mine... oops, if you'll vote for my image first, friend!! That's my dollars worth.. live with it... inflation is just like the Hot20.. BAD!!!!! ;^P CLICK.....!

"This gallery is primarily for images rendered within Poser itself. Images of Poser figures rendered in other applications are still welcome, but what's the challenge in that? See how well you can do using it's basic rendering tools!" From the header to the Poser Gallery. While I agree that the idea of segmenting the galleries according to applications leads to elitism, it is what we have thus far, and it would be nice if we could work within those structures. "The Renderosity Mixed Medium Art GalleryThis gallery is for Renderosity members to display their original Mixed Medium (created with more than one program or tool) images for review, critique and feedback by other Renderosity members." This is the header for the Mixed medium gallery. Esentially, it really should be the most popular and most posted to one as it is the more accurate category for what I believe is the majority of the posts to the Poser gallery. I'm of the mind that they should end the hot whatevers and the voting and all the popularity crud and then actually enforce the gallery system as they have it present. But, seeing as how I'm too much of a pain in the butt and would please them by leaving, I doubt much that my input will count for much ;)

Rockets said it best way back at the top of this but I will add a bit too.

Hot 20 is Renerotica Lite and maybe should be given a new catagory name because apparently there are people looking for that.
When I go there I do hope to see work that is pushing bounderies in more than one theme.

As for Postwork, one only gets brownie points in the world for doing Everything only in Poser if you're working for an Animation house, because you might save them money. If you're doing illustrations, you are probably making yourself too expensive for the job.
If it is just for the pride of doing Poser explosion particles then your doing it for yourself.
I see no reason to cut oneself off from other tools.
No one does in the proffessional world.

The Moderator picks are actually selected each day by whoever monitors the gallery, so they are picked by the entire team of coordinators and moderators. We tend to just pick a couple of images which stood out from the rest of the days submissions, based on personal taste. It's not intended to be a judgement on who does the best work. It's nice to know someone likes them :-) Shoshanna.

FlyByNight ( ) posted Fri, 12 November 2004 at 3:05 AM

I've enjoyed the "picks" too because it gave me a chance to see work I've missed since I don't have time to look through hundreds of new gallery images each day. Never felt it was a judgement but more of a sharing thing. Is there a place where they are posted each day?

They are updated weekly and currently you can find them in the back room. We will be adding them to the Poser community page as well from next week. Shoshanna :-)

I don't have any problem with the Top 20 and am surprised that others do. It's just an extra feature that people can look at or not. I haven't been looking at the Top 20 often, but the images in it today are all good. They're all pinups, but that's mostly what people are looking for, so that's not surprising. I just put my first pinup in my gallery and, in a couple days, that image has gotten more looks than stuff that's been in the gallery for a year. In some ways, that's kind of a shame, but that's what people want to see. I put as much work in the pinup as I have in my other illustrations, so there's no guilt there. Even though the pinup has quickly become one of my more popular images, I'm not going to start churning out just pinups. The Top 20 is a simple feature that lets viewers click for images they like a lot. As far as I know, none of mine have been liked enough to place in that gallery. The lack of such notice isn't going to ruin my day or make me change what I'm doing. I don't know how often I'll look at the feature, but I can't imagine wanting to dump it for any reasons.
