What's a Mac? No, seriously though, as far as I know Bryce 5 is OS10 native. Or maybe it was OS9 native? I know it's not really compatible with XP, but it runs anyway. You just can't minimize it the normal way, you have to use the "Start" bar's "Show Desktop" function to minimize it. But as far as I know, Bryce 5 will run on OS10.
I'm using Bryce under OSX 10.2.8 and it runs natively. But it isn't optimised for Altivec, nor does it have multiprocessor support. So on a single G3 it runs equally fast as on a dual G4 (if clock speeds are identical).
Yup, Bryce 4 OSX was out during Apple's OSX beta. B5 OSX almost never crashes with one notable exception: If the textures for an .OBJ import are not in the same folder as the .OBJ, Bryce crashes when it tries to locate them. A couple of annoying (but not fatal) problems are you can't put your computer to sleep while Bryce is running (Bryce turns it off!), that you can't bring the Bryce window forward by clicking in it, it ignores OSX's three button mouse drivers and it runs the CPU at 100% even when it's idle, which can cause thermal problems, especially on laptops. Bryce OSX is Carbonized or a port using apple's OS9 to OSX compiler so it's not native (Cocca). btw - Bryce 5 OSX renders about 10% faster, cycle for cycle, then the PC. HTH; Dan
Thanks for the quick responses! I love coming to Renderosity with questions because I usually get answers right away. To roobol and Jausse: Do you have any of the problems dan mentioned? Specifically the part about the CPU running at 100% in Bryce, even when idle? That can be pretty noisy on my Dual G5 with all nine fans running ("Please place your tray tables in their upright and locked positions and prepare for take off"). All the other issues mentioned I can live with, but that CPU issue would make me wait for updates.

Sigmadog: If you're a member of the DAZ Bryce Talk Forum check this thread above. And a correction- Bryce runs at about 80% not 100. HTH; DanHave B5 and Panther 10.3.6. Although my processor would constantly run while B5 was open on my Titanium G4 with 800mhz, on my new computer, a G5 dual with 2.5 ghz processor speed, it's much better. I've only had the new computer for about a week so haven't yet had a chance to fully stretch its legs and test things out. I did notice that launching B5 cycled up my processor but once started, all quieted down. It will be interesting to see how the G5 handles volumetrics, etc. All I can say for sure is that the increase in processor speed has blown my mind. :)
I dare you, while there is still time, to have a magnificent obsession. --William Danforth

I thought Bryce was not compatible with the Mac OSX environment, but I have seen several references that indicate otherwise - and it's even on the Daz website, so I guess it's true. My venerable Bryce 3 only runs in Classic mode, which I'd rather avoid. Any Mac users out there running Panther (OS 10.3) and Bryce who could offer a recommendation?
