Subject: Painter 3D problems with RDS 5.5

seedpress ( ) posted Thu, 07 December 2000 at 7:35 PM ยท edited Fri, 15 November 2024 at 5:16 PM

Two problems: 1. Each time I use RDS 5.5, when I first try to use the Painter 3D pop up, I am asked for the path to the program. It doesn't want to save this info when I close down the program. I have to tell it the path again each time I reboot RDS 5.5 (really annoying!) I've installed all the patches and fixes for Painter (I think!) Anyone else have this problem? Know of a fix? 2. Another glitch--the Painter 3D pop-up help box says it can't find its help file, named "cDetMod.hlp", which is supposed to be in a non-existent sub-directory called ". .extPainter 3D for RDD" or something like that. It's a minor nuisance, but it sure bugs me. RDS 5.5 seems neat, but it is a naughty install!!!

Have applied the Painter 3d fix for rds5.5? the zip was named P3dfix.zip and contained the following readme file. >> To Install Painter 3d extensions and confirm installation. Copy this entire folder into the Ext directory in the RayDream Studio5.5 directory. Start the RayDream Studio5.5 application, create or open a scene file, and from the Windows menu select Metacreations Painter3D. The Metacreations Painter3d windoid will appear. Select an object and hit the Paint Object button on the Painter3d windoid. Painter3D will then launch. If the error message "Painter 3D did not start!" appears, then you must install Painter 3D from your Plus Pack CD.<<

Yup, prior to having this problem, I had already done what you have suggested--the problem exists despite the fact that I had already installed the fix you mentioned. Of course, prior to installing that fix, there was no Painter 3D pop-up window available. Now, before I actually paint within Painter 3D for the first time, I have to tell RDS 5.5 exactly where the ".exe" is. I have to do this every time I reboot RDS 5.5.

I haven't had either of these programs installed in a while so maybe I'm not the right person to give help. But if memory serves me well shouldn't the info that has to do with the exchange of data between RDS and P3D be store in the RDS ini file? could the ini file be set to read-only or in some other way not be recording you settings?

Will check that out in the morning. I couldn't find one earlier. So I actually wrote an .ini myself--modled after the one for Poser. But it didn't work. I'll try your suggestion, though. Thanks for your time.

Hi, I just got RDS 5.5 with Painter3D. Where can I obtain the 'fix' for P3D that you all refer to? Thanks, Ziggi

seedpress ( ) posted Fri, 08 December 2000 at 2:46 PM

It is in the "FILES" area of the Egroups group called Raydream: group.http://www.egroups.com/group/Raydream First, you'll have to join egroups (easy to do): http://www.egroups.com Next sign up for the Raydream group (again, easy). There are three Raydream egruops. Join to the one mentioned above--AFTER you join as outlined above. Look on the sidebar for the "files" area. There are several other fixes on there too. Please let me know if you have the same problem I have referred to in my first post in this thread--even if you have no solution to it, I would know that the problem is not related to my own particular system here. Good luck. Let me know if you have any install problems. Make sure to read the "read me" text.

Well I applied the fix and I now have the ability to move directly between RDS5.5 and Painter3D. Definately an improvement! I have the same minor inconvience that you do, seedpress, in that the first time I start up P3D, I have to locate the 'exe' for RDS5.5. Oh well, it still much easier than before. Thanks for all your information. Ziggi
