THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Meager attempt at animating rolling wheel motion...

I don't remember trying this before, even though I've had Bryce for a good while. Anyhow I found that if I try to animate a steering motion (object y-axis rotation) along with a rolling motion (object x-axis rotation) I get some real bad skewing action going on. My guess is that I'll have to use some null objects to parent the wheels to in order to fix that. As of now all the wheels are parented to the "vehicle" body. If this works out alright, I might try it with something a bit more serious. D'oh! I also forgot to make the rear wheels spin. I'll save that for the next attempt, rendering takes long enough as it is. Now if only Bryce had physics simulation in addition to keyframing...

My animation experience is limited in Bryce but...I wonder if you have to change your origin for the wheels several tines to get the double rotation to work right.

If the wheels are part of a group or linked to another object try this. Select only the wheels, then open the Attributes menu, on the linking tab disable all the Propagate options. This may or may not work...might also need to set new keyframes.

I tried it again with null objects controlling the wheels position in relation to the main body of the vehicle. They can then be used to steer each wheel and/or allow for suspension movement. The wheels are then made the children of these objects and can then rotate with the proper behavior. I've noticed that there's only one rotation channel for any object in the Bryce motion lab. This might be part of the problem with the skewing. (I'm suprised rotation isn't separated into channels for each axis.) If anyone is interested I'll post a link to a later attempt to show how I figured it out. (It's still a bit tricky to get right on just keyframing. I can see why most people prefer to animate hovering/flying stuff rather than wheeled or walking actions in Bryce.)
