Subject: DAZ finally releases Victoria 3!!!

Wow! Did you guys see that??? Can't wait to get my hands on this one! If you haven't seen, just go to DAZ and click "Daz original new releases" and behold their brand new release! Wow, I'm amazed, has anyone bought her yet??? Daz's new site sucks. Someone please tell me when they release something interesting that can actually be viewed in a logical manner. -WTB

When you are on their stupid new page, there is a drop down at the top to sort according to most popular or newest releases. Yours is viewing by most popular, the default, that is why Victoria 3 comes up at the top. Set it to by new releases, an the latest stuff comes first. Bad site in my opinion, anyway.

Your specialist military, sci-fi, historical and real world site.

Lawndart ( ) posted Wed, 17 November 2004 at 6:07 PM

I don't see the advert that your talking about. I noticed as soon as they changed it that it was really really slow. I'm assumng that they have some new functionality that warrants the change. I just don't see it yet.

artbyphil ( ) posted Wed, 17 November 2004 at 6:16 PM

no I can't see a drop down to change this either, where have they hidden it!

randym77 ( ) posted Wed, 17 November 2004 at 6:38 PM

The drop down menu was screwed up today. If you sorted "newest first," no new products were visible. But sort by "most popular," and presto, there were the new products. :-P

Dave-So ( ) posted Wed, 17 November 2004 at 9:21 PM

you have to first click on the big graphic/splash page... this site is a click fest.... plus extremely slow...

You know, retail food chains routinely "re-face" their stores (constantly move products/sections around) because marketing research shows that there is more impulse buying and general sales go up (you're walking down the aisle and notice something you really don't need but buy it anyway). This really pisses me off because the elderly have a particularly hard time with it. Another marketing genius move I think, but the site is slow as all hell and the flashing crap grates and is particularly offensive. Reminds me of the red light district lmao and a family oriented site at that

AntoniaTiger ( ) posted Thu, 18 November 2004 at 1:04 AM

Things are glitchy, but, on this end of my phone line, it doesn't seem to be the server that's slowing it down. The graphics are generally bigger, and that is having an effect.

Bug ( ) posted Thu, 18 November 2004 at 5:31 AM

I like the tab menu on the first page, but the navigation for the rest of the sight is abolutely horrible. I spent forever last night trying to find a piece of clothing I thought they had for Mike, but wound up wading through tons of other stuff for Vicky and other characters. Dividing up catagories according to characters would be much more useful then the "Formal, Casual, Fantasy, etc.etc..." setup they have now. Usually I have bought a ton of stuff everytime they had the big sale, but now I just feel frustrated every time I go into the store. But I guess it is for the best, it leaves more cash for the christmas shopping :-)

mickmca ( ) posted Thu, 18 November 2004 at 5:52 AM

Yesterday I tried to find the cheapest on-sale DAZ Original that wasn't a PC item. The slice 'n' dice menus don't get you there. There is a way to see only PC items, but no way to exclude them. As usual with DAZ, the new site is half-done, and we love them so much, those rascals, that we will put up with it. After all, they'll fix most of it someday, and if it screws up transactions (why assume a face lift had a positive effect on their wholesome garage band eCommerce code?), golly heck, just give them a call and they'll apologize. That's a personal promise, and you can't get better than that!

As it happens, I went stright from this thread to the Smithsonian's store. It uses the same framework as the DAZ store (what I think of as Amazoning), and guess what? It works. This is not rocket science. M

randym77 ( ) posted Thu, 18 November 2004 at 3:36 PM

It's worse than ever now! Click on "DAZ originals" or "Published," and you get "no items found." The store appears to be empty.

If the new site was mine, I'd have shot the server it was hosted on, then taken a whip to the guy who designed it. Oops, can I say 'whip', now?

deci6el ( ) posted Thu, 18 November 2004 at 9:12 PM

I thought change just bothered old people. Let me rephrase that, change bothers those who have crystalized because it is more difficult to flow. When something doesn't work that bugs everyone except the repair person who depends on it for a living. Haven't found anything broken yet at Daz and I have enjoyed the site re-design so far. It says "freshness" to me. For any of you product developers out there, my pet peeve is a product page that dispays a long bit of prose or poetry in place of a description of what makes this product unique or worth buying over other similar products. Don't mean to be cruel to the would-be poets out there I just want to know more about what I'm going to buy. There, now I've praised and complained.

randym77 ( ) posted Thu, 18 November 2004 at 9:23 PM

I've found a lot of things broken. The site is much slower now. Unusably slow, last weekend and Monday. Like, half an hour to load a page (on broadband!). The sorting by newest and most popular weren't working yesterday. You couldn't find any products in the store at all this afternoon. You clicked on the store links, and you got, "Sorry, no products."

Sorry, but that's broken. The purpose of a commercial Web site is to quickly transfer as much money as possible from visitors to the site owners. Not having any products in the store is a real impediment to that.

Photopium ( ) posted Thu, 18 November 2004 at 9:36 PM

deci6al- What exactly do you find "working" about clicking on "Daz Original New Releases" only to see a page full of Victoria 3? In what universe is that "Working"? In what universe is that "easy to navigate"? Old people hate change because 9 times out of 10 we know it's going to be for the worse, because a-holes keep trying to fix things that aren't broken and liberate people from things that were best left conservative. -WTB

hauksdottir ( ) posted Sat, 20 November 2004 at 12:42 AM

Having a sale and having the site down or no products showing at the same time isn't going to leave a good impression in the minds of newer purchasers. Old-timers might be inclined to forgive and come back later, but aren't sales suppose to attract new people? Meanwhile RDNA's 50% off sale is continuing for another couple of days... and their store works. Judith says that there may be some of the changes we have asked for in the near future... but not when the sale is ongoing. Smart cookies. Wait until after we are surfeited and THEN play with the code. Carolly

deci6el ( ) posted Sat, 20 November 2004 at 7:04 AM

Will the Bloody, Sorry for the long lag time responsding. I haven't been around. Thrilled that Renderosity now sends me messages when a reply to my post is made. (Don't ask why) Sure, I get your point about seeing V3. But, as I have now set my prefs for newest items so that isn't a problem for me. Giving me a choice to list things to fit my needs on a day to day basis works in the universe I live in because I change from day to day as well. Maybe you haven't found it yet, but in your account settings you can set things up to suit you, well, I don't know if it will suit you but it will give you some options. Speaking of old, there's that old saying that brings balance to any moment. When you're sad it will make you happy and when you're happy it will make you sad. "This too shall pass." I tend to get more annoyed at my favorite software moving menus around just when I'd gotten them all memorized. But then, I too shall pass. Hey Movida! My grocery store just moved all their stuff around to different isles, laughed and thought of your comments. cheers to all

randym77 ( ) posted Sat, 20 November 2004 at 10:32 AM

William's point was that even if you did have your prefs set to view newest first, you got V3 as "newest." The database was screwed to hell for awhile. "Newest" didn't actually show the newest, while "Most popular" did.

It was a little better yesterday, but today it's extremely slow. I tried to load the main page ten minutes ago, and it's still not loaded. I have a bandwidth monitor installed, and DAZ shows zero for long periods of time. I've got plenty of available bandwidth, but DAZ is just not talking to me.

Yes, I'm sure it will pass. But as Carolly points out, this is pretty bad timing. The big "original" sale is likely to attract newbies (old-timers already having most of the DAZ originals they want). This is the kind of thing that sends new customers screaming into the night.

I am glad to hear the RDNA sale has been extended. I had been planning to buy a few more things last night, but ended up pulling out my hair trying to submit an entry to the DAZ holiday card contest. (And it didn't even go through!)

Clearly I've got my emotional tolerance dials set to a different bias.
I noted the extreme slowness @ DAZ yesterday as well. I tend to log in and look over when it's finished loading and keep myself busy on another workstation until then. So, I can understand if I was sitting there watching it load it would be frustrating.

And as far as the Daz market goes I'm not interested in the new Daz teens or any of the 19th Century fashions so its been a welcome lapse in draining my wallet. Although, as long as Stonemason and Moebius87 (and the rest) keep putting out cool Sci-Fi stuff, my budget is in danger.

Look, I'm not trying to talk anyone out of their anger. If we were casting our informal votes for the new Daz design I thought I'd just sign in and say it feels more organized for me.
Everyone is free to hate it as much as they want.
Peace.

"Anger" is a bit strong. I don't think anyone's angry. Irritated, perhaps. And amused, in an eye-rolling sort of way. DAZ has a remarkable talent for Cheneying up its promotions. (Note the thread name. Does it sound "angry"?)

khrys http://www.daz3d.com/shop.php?op=itemdetails&item=1419 buy them a gift certificate send them the code. (that's the only way to do it) bug.. if you click on the figures tab you can find things seperated by catagories. V3 (clothing, hair, props, poses,) M3 (clothing hair props poses) There's also the search bar if you want to look for something in the store. The slowness of the site was being worked on and i know for me it's faster than it was. as for the v3 (spent morning out in snow with daughter) I am assuming it was a glitch cuz the above is what i see now. If you have questions feel free to ask me. If i don't have the answer i always try to find out.

deci6el ( ) posted Sat, 20 November 2004 at 11:56 PM

randym77, It only started to sound angry when William the Bloody's response started with my name and began that repetitive question technique used in interrogation rooms when the police try and break your cover story. (as seen on TeeVee, no personal experience, here) Although I am used to people wondering what universe I live in. And then some blanket statement about what old people know about "a-holes". While "a-holes" Does show restraint it does sound angry, to me. As for who is older and can speak for what the entire octogenarian population thinks, that is an arguement that I don't want to win. The new Daz site is Very frustrating for some right now and I don't want to get in the way of anyone who wants to let off steam about it. I like that there is a vehicle section now that I can go and check if there are new tanks, planes, or sports cars.

Photopium ( ) posted Sun, 21 November 2004 at 12:42 AM

Sorry about my tone. I mean, well, not really, but I do like to challenge a strange opinion when I come across one lol. I'm still getting bloody Victoria 3 whenever I want to see what Daz's original new releases are. Oh sure, I can see new brokered items (I think) and new Platinum Club items (I think) but as for the Original new releases, I'm looking at a whole lotta vicky. (Which I still maintain illustrates a broken and thus crappy website) Though I insist it is an a-hole who fixes something that isn't broken, or liberates something best left conservative (and, adding conserves something best left liberal) I did not mean to imply that dec8 is an a-hole. I AM very curious to know, dec8, if you had any specific problems with the old site? -WTB

AlleyKatArt ( ) posted Sun, 21 November 2004 at 12:50 AM

I didn't. I had absolutely ZERO problems with the old site, and every time I turn around on the new one, it's breaking somehow. Broken links, or all around slowness, it's frustrating as all hell and the only reason I even WENT there tonight was to buy a friend a gift. Took me twenty minutes of searching to find out the only way to DO that is to buy them a gift certificate for the closest dollar amount. -.-;

deci6el ( ) posted Sun, 21 November 2004 at 1:16 AM

WTB (et al), I didn't have any conscious problem with the old site other than the one mentioned way above. The unconscious problem was that I never ventured past what was new and now with the redesign I have checked out things that I had passed by a long time ago. I like now that when I say "move items from my wishlist to cart" it actually does it. It used to fight me on that. I'm really not trying to rub salt in the wound. At this very moment I'm logged into DAZ and about to purchase the new Dystopia stuff and some PC items. It's not slow, I can find things OK. It's working for me, at this moment. I hope you can get your prefs to work out, if V3 came up first for me and the load time was like it was yesterday, I wouldn't like it either.

AlleyKatArt ( ) posted Sun, 21 November 2004 at 1:24 AM

Deci, not to disagree, but the load time was WORSE most of today. I know I'm on 56k, so it's going to take longer with me, but my friend is on BROADBAND and, just to test, we opened a page at the same time. Mine took a whole two seconds longer to load. It took almost two minutes. Something is wrong with that site.

Kreations By Khrys

deci6el ( ) posted Sun, 21 November 2004 at 2:28 AM

Maybe its been faster for me cause all the currents running down hill to Australia. I suffered through 56k for so long now that I have broadband I never really feel bothered by what load time I'm getting. Downloaded a bunch of stuff from there and it didn't seem so bad. But then my wife came in and complained that I'd been working too long for a Sunday, so there ya go. I'm not very good at sensing the passage of time. But I'm great at spending it.

randym77 ( ) posted Sun, 21 November 2004 at 8:49 AM

The "a-hole" comment, I think, was not anger at DAZ so much as anger at the implication that anyone who dislikes the new DAZ site is some kind of Luddite, or an old fart set in their ways. You insult people, they tend to get irate, y'know?

Storm, what is the point of having public wishlists if you can't buy things for people???

And I agree, something is wrong with the new DAZ site. It's okay early in the morning, or late at night (which may be why it works from Australia), but during the hours when normal North Americans are shopping, it's terribly slow.

Moving from wishlist to cart and back again always worked fine for me with the old site. (Haven't tried it with the new. My wishlist is huge, and now takes forever and a day to load.) That is one element I liked about the DAZ site. RDNA has no wishlist. PoserPros has a wishlist, and lets you move things from wishlist to cart - but not from cart to wishlist. If you change your mind about buying something after it's in your cart, you have to delete it, then re-add the item to your wishlist.

Bug ( ) posted Sun, 21 November 2004 at 9:25 AM

Stormrage, I see no figures tab, but there is a characters tab with men, women, children etc. If I chose to view "figures" from the view button I still get no choices to sort by clothing or figure, just newest, oldest, price etc. Am I missing something? I make educational programs for a living, and if I am missing something, others are too. Interfaces should be intuitive, which I am afraid does not seem to be the case on most of the site.

deci6el ( ) posted Sun, 21 November 2004 at 6:05 PM

The few times I experienced being a normal North American was usually when someone would say, "You are so wierd." Yeah, my general comment about people hating change came from many experiences here and shouldn't have been made in this thread. My intent was just to say it was working for me but it isn't my intent to invalidate any other experience. Oh, the other thing I really like about the new Daz site is now it only lists the Mac downloads and I don't have to wade through all the .exe

Stormrage ( ) posted Sun, 21 November 2004 at 7:01 PM

randym77 I don't know but I will ask bug.. hmmm are you seeing the first panel in the image above? If you click on figures, it will go to the figures and you can search by model then click on the model and you can search through clothing, hair, poses and the like.

Bug ( ) posted Mon, 22 November 2004 at 4:20 AM ยท edited Mon, 22 November 2004 at 4:30 AM

I am afraid it doesn't seem to work for me, clicking just makes the page "hiccup" dispite clicking on figure there, and it just shows the same stuff under catagories, and I have tried this at work and home, but it could have something to do with the site slowness now :-( Hopefully it will get ironed out sometime in the future Btw, thanks for pointing that out Stormrage
