Subject: Names of Characters? (slightly OT)

ChuckEvans ( ) posted Sun, 28 November 2004 at 9:29 PM · edited Sun, 12 January 2025 at 8:32 PM

Looking through the Marketplace now for the last several months, I always notice the new characters (usually for V3). And since there seems to be a prohibition for using a name that someone else has already used, there seems to be a growing proliferation of never-before-heard-of names barely pronouncible.

So, when ALL the names that ARE resemblences of an actual name are gone, what will we be left with? "ABC", "ABC1", "qwerty"?

Just a thought:

IF you create a character for sale and you really like the name, Anna, for example, what would be wrong with naming the character, "Anna by Chuck"? If there were several "Annas", then they could all be distinguished by appending the creator's name.

But, I suppose this idea has its flaws and we will be left with a downward-spiraling bastardization of the entries in the "Book of Names".

Not angry or anything...just sighing...

"And since there seems to be a prohibition for using a name that someone else has already used, there seems to be a growing proliferation of never-before-heard-of names barely pronouncible." There is indeed such a prohibition. Alas, the trend will continue. At least they haven't used me yet...

Perhaps, just perhaps, that is why somebody, in their infinite wisdom ... ... invented ......................... last names? (aka surnames) (yeah, sure geep, kick the hornets nest and then run away) ;=]

LOL @ Doc Geep... Funny because I've often looked at that name and tried to figure it out. I've decided it's pronounced, "insane". Like my mother used to tell me...if you don't know how to pronounce a word, just say, "wheelbarrow", and roll on.

XENOPHONZ ( ) posted Sun, 28 November 2004 at 10:38 PM

Yeah.....instead of just "Mary" for V3 --

Why not have "Mary Smith" for V3?

Then we could follow with "Mary Jones" for V3......

"Mary Johnson" for V3........

"Mary Thomas" for V3.........

"Mary X" for V3 (goth version)........

The amazing possibilities stagger the mind.

And yes indeed -- when I'm not the one working admin for ODF, the name is pronounced "insane" -- fitting, given I am and all... ooh -- ohh!!! After Mary we could move on to George!!!

Well, it's easy enough to give them a second name, even if it's not a last name. Mary can be Mary Elizabeth, Andrea might be Andrea Rose, Lucinda might become Lucinda Joy, who knows. But I believe that they do allow characters with similar names, just not identical. I'll direct Clint to this thread and see what he thinks. bonni (elizabeth :-)

I've wondered about this as well. Character packs are getting released at such a rate that the matter is getting out of hand, not to mention duplications with figure names. It might be better to abandon using first names altogether, and just have Character#03 by Vendorname.

Tilandra ( ) posted Mon, 29 November 2004 at 5:08 AM

You know, I mentioned that over a year ago when we had our first big flap over two folks releasing texture packs with the same name... I asked why they were naming them after people when we were obviously going to hit a wall somewhere down the road. It was met with less than enthusiasm. I can see naming a morph set that includes a texture, sort of, but just textures? People are cranking those out left and right, ya might as well start numbering them. Or making the titles descriptive, like "smoldering temptress". Though the R'osity stance is that duplicate names are acceptable IF you put "XXXXX by Vendor" as the item title. Or it was the last time this came up and I was paying attention at any rate :P

Ah, c'mon..do you know how many names there are out there? I used to have 'the New Age Baby name book', which had thousands..and if that's not enough, you can go for neologisms like Shenethia, Shaquanda, you know..might spice things up to have more ethnic models at that..;)

i noticed that for ages.. quite a lot of the names seem very made up or over contrived.. its a little pet peeve of mine... all the ariannaellai-eena's .. hehe

for instance, the normal name Michelle, would most likely come out in the MP as Mychelerina or something equally daft..

So to all the ena, ina, ria lovers, please try to create names that don't sound so airy fairy or made up.. just for my nerves.. LOL

-S-

Ps. i don't really care all that much, its just a pet peeve, everytime i look in the MP there's another 'ina' up there, makes me cringe.. hehehe

Yep (wink), I knew that. Read several of your comments here and there, especially on Sims 2.
