I've got this picture of my son and I want to fix the facial blemishes before he leaves for Iraq.

Any sugestions?

BTW: A short "Pictorial for Dummies" whould be helpful, as this is my user level.

There's lots of photo retouch tuts on this site. I haven't really looked at them so don't know how good they are..

You've got a handsome son..

All you really need is the Patch Tool and/or Healing Brush Tool. Here is a quickie I did.

retrocity ( ) posted Fri, 26 November 2004 at 11:16 PM

great job dreamer!! if i ever lose my hair i'll know who to go to ;) :) retrocity

I could remove your hair now to see what you will become later. lol

It could have been a better job if I took some time. They are quite amazing tools. Unlike the Clone Stamp, it retains the texture, lighting and shading of the source. Zoom in nice and close, I used Patch Tool and when I want to pan around I hold the space bar. That way you don't deselect your Patch Tool. Hard to remember all the shortcuts but there are a handfull that are handy to remember.

Correction: As per help files, the Patch tool MATCHES the texture, lighting, and shading of the sampled pixels to the source pixels.

I'm clueless.

Are you using photoshop 7 or later? I believe they added both the Patch Tool and Healing Brush Tool in Photoshop 7 and improved the Patch Tool in Photoshop CS.
  1. Zoom in on part section you want to work on. Click on Patch Tool (have source selected on the option bar at top). Draw circle around blemish.
  2. Drag circle to blemish free area.
  3. Release.

Yes PS7. I see where you checked off Source. My eyes aren't the greatest anymore.

Too many years staring at CRT's I guess.

Thanx Dreamer.

Your welcome. I'm a graphics addict. I seem to prefer editing images rather than creating from scratch. Even though I dragged to a lighter spot, you will see it ends up being same shading as original. I just went around one for demonstration purposes. You can circle around a few that are close together and drag to clean area.

cryptojoe ( ) posted Sat, 27 November 2004 at 5:08 PM

Honestly I keep screwing the thing up. I mean, your instructions are very helpful, and I was able to follow and do likewise with the original. Then I screwed it all up using the wand and blurring the colors together.

You know? If I didn't have fifty things going at once it might be easier.

How much would you charge me to clean this picture up? Contact me on the IM if your interested, or just use the link to email me.

I have a more cleaned up photo I think you will be pleased with. Just give me an email I can send to. Don't worry about the charge. Can't charge anyone sending son to Iraq. I could post here if no one minds yet another image.

By all means post away. I gave you my email, please send me one that way as well. I want to do a full portrait size for the wall.

Thanx Again.

dreamer101 ( ) posted Sat, 27 November 2004 at 11:55 PM

I did lighten it as well to bring out more details. Still not perfect (i'm never completely happy) but I wasn't working from best quality original jpg either. Hope it's close to what you expected.

cryptojoe ( ) posted Sun, 28 November 2004 at 12:52 AM

Perfect man. I scanned the picture at 300 Resolution for an 8.5M file. I couldn't have done better!

SeanE ( ) posted Sun, 28 November 2004 at 4:14 AM

I actually think the first 'cleaned up' pic looks more realistic and better than the second one... the second one looks too perfect and squeaky clean. People's faces aren't that neat and always have texture and blemishes

Raven_Shar ( ) posted Mon, 29 November 2004 at 11:46 PM

hmmm he is very handsome!!

and i learnt quite a bit reading all this.

cryptojoe ( ) posted Tue, 30 November 2004 at 2:37 AM

Thanx Raven. He's a wonderful kid, and has been a blessing to me. His make-up from me is one quarter Native American (White Indians of the Sioux and Chippewa tribes of Michigan), Scotch, Irish, and German Jews. From his mother the other half is pure Korean.

We've been married now for almost 25 years, and we are both quite anxious about this phase in his life. He seems to think he's going to save the world by finishing what his fathers generation was not allowed to. Didn't mean to bring current politics into it. Sorry guys, I really appreciate all the kind words and assistance for me and my little Warrior; the fruit of my loom.

dreamer101 ( ) posted Tue, 30 November 2004 at 3:22 AM

BTW when I said "I wasn't working from best quality original jpg" I only meant I was working from a 116kb 72 resolution jpg that was posted here and not the original 8.5mb 300 resolution file.

Oh sure, I understood that. Man, my son will be so happy. You don't know how much this will mean to him.

You get the Support Our Troops Ribbon for all you've done.
