Hey guys ... been processing some of my form&figure/fine art nude images with heavy shadows and toning. Wondered what you thought of the look.

And see ... I even remembered to hit the nudity button this time. :)

Oh yes I like this very much. Not sure if you will agree but I would flip the image so the light side was on the left side IMO (not that I know anything about this) it would be a more powerful compo. LP

i'm in it for the art! & i find this very artful!
if anything the harsh contrast of the backside seems a tad strong with the background... would darken the background on that side :]

Getting ready for work, so had only literally a minute to try this, so excuse the sloppiness. Here I've flipped it and did a fast and dirty darken on the one side to see how it looks.

I agree with both of these statements. Cyn's I thought of doing earlier and was one of the things I wanted to see if anyone else said. I keep going back and forth on it. Sometimes I look at it and I like it ... then I look again and think too bright.

LP's I didn't even think of (weird how you get stuck in a single way of thinking). I believe you're right. That composition does have more impact and I like it. Thanks!

I really like the toning, Donald. And, interesting psychology experiment, do like the image flipped. I have suspicions the model did not like the result?

DHolman ( ) posted Thu, 16 December 2004 at 8:16 AM

Don't know what she thinks yet. She called me last night, but I was in the middle of a problem at work and couldn't talk to her. Will call her this afternoon. Let me ask ... why do you have a suspicion she didn't like the result?

cynlee ( ) posted Thu, 16 December 2004 at 9:22 AM

I really do like the darkened background, without the smeared behind :] & the flip works too! I can see this framed & hung on the wall

i think it's great! just my opinion..but i think i would like it better without such a heavy shadow along her backside. the other shadows are awesome though!

The smudged butt and leg seem to take away from it.Honestly though in the forst one I liked it as was.Though the behind is rather prominent. If you could work it a bit smoother using a 100% smudge opacity. Be hard, but will be worth it.

dB - You'll have to talk to Misha about the smudged butt. Wasn't my doing. :)

Misha883 ( ) posted Sat, 18 December 2004 at 7:57 AM

Grumble... Folks with these damn bright monitors... Wasn't meant to be perfect. That's Donald's job. He can smear his own butt, thank you very much.

DHolman ( ) posted Sat, 18 December 2004 at 9:31 AM

So, c'mon Misha. I still wanna know why you had a suspicion she didn't like the result? Talk to her last night, but I'm not saying what she said 'til I see what you say. :) -=>Donald

I like the image..... prefer it flipped with the diagnol line leading left to right. Her hand becomes the main focus, where before it was her butt. I can see the softness around the rear end on the last image posted (#5), where it was not in the earlier versions...... somehow lost it's crispness and I think her rear end should be sharp still......

My 2 cents, ca-ching. Forgot to say I really love the toning...... and the background is gorgeous too.

Hold on ... now how did my butt get into this?

'chelle - points at Misha He's the tushie smudger. hehehe ... Think I'll make him a t-shirt.

This image is pretty close to the final image I think. Need to look at it again tomorrow to be sure. Picked up some haloing in the jpeg that's not in the fullsize image.

Tedz - umm, no. :) Misha has abandoned us. Oh, what a sad day. We float here alone in this thread, untethered and adrift. sniff

DHolman ( ) posted Wed, 22 December 2004 at 6:37 AM

Okay .. after throwing handfuls of peas at Misha until he talked, I got my answer. :) I won't repeat it here since it wasn't a public response. Let me just say that what he thought she'd think wasn't what she actually thought .... wow, that almost made my head hurt typing.

Anyway, she found 3 things she didn't like in the image (although she saw a little bit earlier version of it).

  1. Skin texture ... she, like many people, thought it would look better with really smooth skin. We've talked before about how in form and figure photography, many times you light the subjects to bring out the skin textures (as I did here). But, people like what they like. :)

  2. The indentation on her rear-end. She didn't like that it wasn't smoother .. she felt she was not relaxed when it was taken. And she wasn't, was a transition movement, so a lot of weight on 1 leg. That's my fault, but I just loved the profile and the position of the hand. I smoothed out the line bit in the final one.

  3. She thought the background was too busy. She also knows, since she was there, that it couldn't be helped. It was the only one we had available at the time that fit with what we were doing. I actually have a digital backdrop creator that I have never used. May try it with this to see what it looks like.

So, there you have it. I know what Misha thought. You know what she thought. And no, I'm not using my bare-butt for a bicycle stand.
