These are good links. Very in-depth. Possibly intimidating to the beginner and those of us with a maththematical brain block....... sad to say I fall into the latter category, and looking at those formulas immediately induces brain twitches and the inability to see straight. I learned by taking lots of photos, reading lots of photo books, and then taking lots more photos. Over time one learns what results a given lens will produce at certain f/stops. And then one will know how to apply what is learned to produce the desired results.
I am, therefore I create.......

There is is much on DOF on the web these are all great I have seen some of them. But not the last one, that is a gem thanks.
I have to admit, it's one of the reasons I like shooting nature with a digital camera. I have 300 exposures and a subject that's not going to move for a very very long time. :) Shoot a few, change the f-stop, shoot a few more, (Now, if I can just figure out a way to get the moon just a BIT more to the north now and then.....) hehe Thanks for the links Misha. I'm always looking to learn more. ~ Rich

I did a quick search, and found tons of on-line information. Some is relatively intuitive to grasp, and some requires quite a lot of arithmetic. http://members.aol.com/Photoinfo/dof.html http://www.cs.mtu.edu/~shene/DigiCam/User-Guide/950/depth-of-field.html http://bobatkins.com/photography/technical/dofcalc.html http://www.normankoren.com/Tutorials/MTF6.html I thought this one was particularly interesting as it bases its "Circle of Confusion" on digital pixel size rather than film characteristics. http://www.wrotniak.net/photo/dof/
