THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Bush generator. Anyone know of one?

diolma ( ) posted Tue, 11 January 2005 at 5:18 PM · edited Fri, 29 November 2024 at 11:07 PM

Preferably free. I have Bantam's twig & grass, and also PlantStudio by wassname. All are good for their intended purposes. But is there a free/cheap bush/hedge/shrubbery (or even tree) generator out there? If so, I can't find it via google... Looking for something that will generate objects acceptable for midground to background. (For foreground I reckon I'll have to model stuff myself..) I'm working with Bryce 3.3, so I don't have the tree-generator thingy... (and don't have any cash to upgrade) :-(( Just hoping.. Cheers Diolma

I have MECN Tree factory,........which is now a defunct app,...I have made bushes for B5 and put them in the free section,......go take a look and if you want me to send you the raw .obj files or do a bush or 2 for you I'd be more than willing to do so. The raw .obj files should import into B3.3 just fine. Lemme' know. TOM(sackrat).

I have jhubert tree designer. His page is defunct. A search of his name turned up this page that has 13 program links. Some are free, some not.

you can't just shrink trees, and bury the trunks?..;) guilty..;)
if Bakter's site died recently..and you still have the URL, look for a site called the Wayback Machine. It catalogs defunct websites. Sometimes the content is even saved with the listing. It's not a 100%, but worth a shot..should go there and see if I can find any of the old Lannie's 3d stuff..sigh..;)

Sackrat: Thx for your generous offer, but I'm looking for something that can generate tree/bush .obj files or similar (much the way that Plant Studio does for flowering plants). Electroglyph: Will see what I can find at that link. Pakled: I don't have much in the way of trees to shrink in the 1st place, alas. Mrdodobird: Probably NOT a good idea in the Oval Office:-) Gog_CA1: errm, same prioblem as with Pakled's suggestion... Thanks to all for the replies. Something may turn up if I keep looking hard enough. Cheers, Diolma

there's a program called Xfrog, that is designed to make plants from 'the ground up'. But it's a bit pricey.

Aye Pakled, there's the rub. If it costs more than about 5.0, I can't afford it. (I'm currently unemployed, and the future prospects are looking grim..) Cheers, Diolma

I was just about to post this link up anyway. "Arbaro - tree generation" (it does bushes also) Now, with anything free, there are sometimes a catch...the program works in Java...so while it will work with any OS that uses Java, you will need to also download the latest Java packaga from SUN. But, I downloaded Arbaro, unzipped it, and double-clicked the file called "arbaro_gui.jar", and away it went! (Like I said, you WILL need the Java download). It exports dxf, obj, and others. Java http://www.java.com/en/index.jsp Arbaro http://arbaro.sourceforge.net/ AS

Example of one of Arbaro's presets, exported out and imported/rendered in Bryce. I just stuck a couple of default textures on it. AS

Grrrr!! Thx AS! I downloaded (almost) that a couple of days ago, while I was looking for something else, but the version I got to appeared to be for POVRAY only... If only I'd looked a little deeper... Have re-downloaded; will play tomorrow:-)) Cheers, Diolma

I thought the same exact thing when I first found this and downloaded it some months ago, lol. AS

Arbaro exports nicely into dxf, been using the plants in Max too, it seems to eat resources though (anyone else found this?)

Have played, have tried to import a preset into Bryce 3.3, got error message "invalid tag". On investigation, it appears the Arbaro uses an "s" tag in the .obj ("s" = "surface"?) which my Bryce doesn't recognise. There were > 4000 of them (so I wasn't inclined to edit .obj manually...) Also, somewhere along the line, I missed out how to assign materials. More playing needed.... There doesn't appear to be a User Manual for the GUI for me to RTF...only one for the Java programmers.. Hmmm. Could be useful, nonetheless.. Cheers, Diolma

Diolma, Have you tried going to DXF, it's a less complex (and older) format then obj, so 3.3 might handle it better.... (BTW if you're only on 3.3 why not grab 4 from one of the current cover mount magazine CDs???? )
