Subject: Which file organizing utility is best?

koether ( ) posted Fri, 14 January 2005 at 8:52 AM · edited Thu, 23 January 2025 at 7:16 PM

There are two Poser utilities on Renderosity for organizing the file structure: Poser File Organizer 1.0 by Dimension3D and PBoost 1.4.2.19 by Hogwarden. My questions are:

  1. Which is better? (Have you used both?)
  2. Do they serve different functions?
  3. If so, are they compatible with each other?
  4. I have both v4 and v5 of Poser. Does that change the advise?
  5. Are there other choices?

Thanks,

I think they are quite different in scope and purpose. I don't know Poser File Organizer, but know PBooost inside out.

From the marketplace info, PFO seems much closer to CorrectReference/CorrectReferencePro also from Hogsoft by Hogwarden. (The former is free, the latter much more powerful than CRFree - or PFO by the looks of it.)

PBooost is focused on switching "banks" of Poser Libraries in and out of Poser's runtime while Poser is running to effectively get around Poser's 255 folders per library limit. This allows for much more organized Poser libraries (even on P4/PPP which do not have sub-folder support). As such it is the program for doing this. PBooost is compatible with Poser 4/PP/5. If you are using it with Windows NT/XP you will need to correct any bad texture references (due to a bug in Poser, not PBooost), which you can do with CRFree or more easily with CRPRo; or perhaps PFO (if it's able to detect every error). For more info on Hogwarden's products check out Hogsoft's website hogsoft.com. PBooost is currently under further development, but existing and new purchasers can buy in confidence as Hogwarden has indicated that updates will free.

You can't go wrong with PBooost and CorrectReference Pro. They've been around for a few years, and have proved themselves. On the other hand, Poser File Organizer is new. I tried the demo, and frankly couldn't see that it did anything. Yes, there was a notice saying some features of the demo were disabled, but the result left me wondering just how the program works. I already have a collection of Poser utilities that don't get used. Besides, so many of the features of Poser File Organizer are already available in CorrectReference Pro. I would also add P3DO Explorer to a list of essential organizing utilities. P3Do Explorer Pro contains some great extra features. Other threads contain more info.

Have used PBooost for years with Poser Propak & run the free Correct Reference after installing new goodies or have file lock ups and no problemo. Couldn't do without PBooost or Correct Reference :-)
