does poser spend processing time rendering everything in a scene, or just what's in the document window?

Just what's in the window. You can test it yourself.... Get a complicated figure into the scene. Hit Ctrl-R to render, and count the seconds. Then slide the camera over to where you're looking at nothing. Render again and count the seconds. Nice obvious difference!

Another good tip is to click on "remove backfacing polygons
in your render options if you aren't trying to render a
reflection or something like that. Then the renderer doesn't
waste time trying to render what you can't see behind the model.
