I know there is something like that already available but it is only one product so I was wondering if anyone else was interested in a (low poly) main street shopping district - like I am - with lots of window-shopping stores, bars, fast food places, etc.,

I was toying with that idea.... and started to make some stuff... but then when I saw the likes of the Victorian street and the Whitechapel set... I gave up in self disgust. Can't compete with the big guys :-(

Nonsense! What you did looks great. It should be taller and have a long section to run the length of the street. To me, the modelling is second to how easy it is to texture.
