Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Jan 11 12:18 am)
For Mac, I do the same - aren't external firewire drives delicious? :) For Windows, I backup the entire Runtime folder occassionally to a separate internal drive and then scoot it to a DVD (or two). stallion, you owe me a vanilla latte capuccino with ram's milk!! ;)
C makes it easy to shoot yourself in the
foot. C++ makes it harder, but when you do, you blow your whole leg
off.

After I've made a lot of changes or installed a lot of new content I like to write the Geometries, libraries, and textures folders to CDs. I now am able to write DVDs so most of the goodies fit onto one disc. I need only take out the one or two custom Characters sub-folders from the libraries folder to keep the backup under the, what, 4GB?. I'm with Stallion! Great poem ;) Rance
Once a month I: before I go off to bed, I create a hi-compression winrar file of the poser folder; as it takes about 3-5 hours to create, I then go to bed. The next time I access my system, I burn the .rar file to a DVD; I use 2 DVD's, unclosed, and alternate between them; I can fit 3 RAR'd backups on each DVD (zip will only fit 2, which is why I use RAR), so 2 blanks last me about 6 months. I've had to restore once since I started doing this, worked fine. My work-in-progress folder is set up to mirror across my network nightly to another machine, so I don't bother backing it up. Yesssss, I could save enormous amounts of space doing incremental backups. However, as an MCSE, LAN & WAN administrator to banks, government agencies and various other places I have come to the realization that SIMPLE IS BETTER.
I have two computers and a external USB harddrive. I use CopyTo Synchronizer to keep the runtimes (and a folder with all my zips and installs) the same on all the drives and the external is my back up/transfer device. I synchronize the drive about every week or two, depending on how much stuff i install or rearrange. I also back everything up to cd (no dvd yet) every couple of months. In less than 20 min I can have all my drives/backups synchronized.

I'm on a PC.
I have an external Maxtor USB drive (120 gigs) with a back-up button configured in such a way that when I simply push the button, it back-ups my whole Poser folder's added/removed/changed files. Extremely simple - no fuzz - no broken cds. Then I keep a "bare-bone" installation in a separate backed-up and zipped file just in case something messes Poser up.
