  1. Self-Portraiture AAAAAAhhhhhhhhh

LostPatrol ( ) posted Sat, 22 January 2005 at 6:21 AM

I tend to agree with Doug, that there should be some definition to opposites, as it is it is a very broad and maybe vague subject. I would also like to make a suggestion, which may or may not be well received! I am not looking to cause adverse comment and is just an opinion. Firstly I think that the number of choices is too great, and should maybe limited to 8-10 each month. Secondly I look at all the choices each month, and form a preconceived idea of what I might do with them, so my suggestion it that the Mods/Coords put their heads together and decide on a single theme with a definition, and set it as the challenge at the start of the month. This way it would be more spontaneous. Just a thought, and may not work for everyone, but may be interesting, and IMO would be worth a trial. PS Doug well spotted title error! Cheers

I promise myself to participate in the challenge but then eventually I don't......dang me. I will vote for Circles. :O))

Michelle A. ( ) posted Sat, 22 January 2005 at 8:49 AM

I sort of like the open-endedness of the challenges.... not that I participate all that much in them, so it doesn't really matter all that much to me. :~) But what I mean by open-ended is the fact that the member is not given a strict definition of the theme. They can form their own ideas about what the theme means to them..... For example "opposites"..... black/white, circles/squares, straight/crooked and so on and so forth.... I do have to admit though, that I feel the challenges could be more educational, in terms of learning a technique or specific theory...... that was always an area that Misha and could never quite figure out how to incorporate into them. Seems those choices never got chosen from the list. I remember well before I became a moderator, we had a challenge called Leading Lines.... I struggled and struggled with it, brought quite a few images to the forum for review.... In the end none of them seemed to work... but I sure learned a lot from it. Maybe something along the lines of a learning series for the forum, as a seperate thing? Just an idea, and one that I might be willing to work on, if I could find the time, and willing members to participate......

I am, therefore I create.......

I agree with what Lost Patrol said. I like one choice.Coords and or mods could draw out of a hat type deal and then use whatever theme for that motnth. Once when I was reading an online tutorial, the instructors gave assignments. Having a criteria may make it more interesting too. MHO.

Opposites for me! I always resolve to participate, but then i can't find anything good enough or i don't find enough time... Hope i'll manage this time!

Onslow ( ) posted Sat, 22 January 2005 at 3:19 PM

Opposites - since it seems to be the form to suggest new or rekindled ideas so I'll do that too :) How about themes like colour: red , blue , yellow , etc. the challenge would be to find a shot that was interesting containing that colour, no good shooting grass for green, of course you could if you can think of an original way to make the shot interesting. Have to have an agreement not to manipulate the colours I suppose, no blue daffodils. Thought number 2: Everyone has the same image to digitally manipulate in anyway they choose. Part of the entry would be to say what you had done so that others could learn.

We too will go to sea in a Sieve,---

Their heads are green, and their hands are blue, And they went to sea in a Sieve.

i agree with michelle. i like NOT having strict definition of a theme. i like to be able to interpret for myself what "opposite" means (or anything else for that matter). i don't enter contests or challenges where there are too many rules that limit my creativity. some criteria ok. but too many rules...count me out. I AM A RULE BREAKER!!! LOL!!! that's just me. i had enough of curtailing my creativity in school when art teachers said i had NO talent for art because i did things differently than others. there was NO room for abstraction. i enjoy learning also. good to work on my technique. that's great for challenge too. like speed...that was very broad area. incorporating learning techniques in challenges is great. i like to have fun. typically i find too many rules mean no fun. but forum is place to learn. sometimes fun... sometimes serious. i see nothing wrong with mods deciding challenge. anyway...that's just my two cents. personally i enjoy more freedom. i will always participate in challenge if i find it interesting and if i don't feel like i have too many rules limiting creativity. i like that we can discuss this here. throw out our thoughts. thanks for listening. i go with the flow....ya'all decide...i will always strive for fun!!! maybe i will find it challenge to try to make photos with rules!!! LOL :)

hi all! sorry i haven't been around, still on vacation...
just checking in real quick... be back for good on Friday

i agree with 'chelle & sheila on keeping the challenge theme open... (i.e. signs- a traffic sign, my entry- sign language)

next month i will limit the number to 8-10 choices
with new suggestions noted

so far:
opposites- 7
life- 2
history- 1
prized possession- 1
pets- 1
self-portrait- 1
circles- 1

addiek ( ) posted Sun, 23 January 2005 at 12:51 PM

Well i liked the idea of circles, kids & clouds.... something tells me that opposites has become the leading horse on track right now ... so I'm resigned to that (sigh) - so make it 8. I agree with Sheila a bit... always hated too many rules... Opposites I suppose could imply symmetry, contrast, as well as opposite in the face value or meaning of things. Sounds a cool one... I think we are playing into the hands of the surreal ... Tedzo should be happy!

I really like the current way that the challenge is run! After working on several of the other forum's challenges - The Photo Forum is not only unique, but, by far - the most fun! We will keep the challenge the way it is - please encourage all your fellow photo-friends to place their votes :) However - as noted above - Keeping the choices between 8 and 10 is also a grand idea! Thanks for making the Photo Forum a fun place to learn and play! Dee-Marie

Looks like "Opposites" will make it. wink My vote, too! Me thinks there will be a lot of possibilities within this theme... so let's see what the photographers will come up with! Looking forward... Monika

Agree with 'chelle: not too many rules when it comes of...fun...
I guess I'll give my vote to "Opposites" - I already have a stupid idea running through my neuron...:-P...don't know if I'll make it, though...
Final word..."Opposites"! :) P.S. And by the way - 8-10 should be more than enough themes!
