Subject: [OT] Dire warning to would-be freestuff providers... :)

I thought I might dip my toe into the turbulent waters of Renderosity freestuff. I'd avoided it before, being worried about the bandwidth that might be needed.

But Flo Hair has been out for a year now - everybody must already have a copy, right? I keep seeing it in gallery renders.

It appears my fears were well-founded: 3.3GB on the first full day after it was approved, 18.8GB for the month; I'm glad I don't use Geocities!

I think I'll put up something less popular this month. :)

When I stuck my Vorg texture on a customers server (with permission), got whacked bigtime plus tax in execss bandwidth charges. But the customer wasn't that upset, the traffic spike shoved him to the top of google and yahoo. Worked out better value advertising than adwords.

Pinky - you left the lens cap of your mind on again.

Heh - I remember the old school-hosted freestuff server pumping out an average of 11GB/day transfer (average, not spike.) That's why I got into the opinionating biz... much easier on the traffic :) /P

Definitely scary! Makes me glad that (purely by accident) I picked an ISP that doesn't charge by the byte or limit bandwidth!

Why is this OT?

EnglishBob ( ) posted Tue, 01 February 2005 at 5:36 PM

Ockham: I thought unlimited bandwidth was a myth? Everywhere I've looked, there's always some clause in the agreement that says they can cut you off if you use too much - 'too much' to be determined at their whim. I prefer a predefined, agreed amount. I was sweating a bit there, but the month passed without further charges. :) Phantast: Just playing it safe. :)

No bandwidth limits with my ISP either. In fact I have two sites without limits. The other one is just bonus for being ADSL client in the first place... things are different in the States obviously. I'm from Northern Europe myself.

I've had similar spikes -- my ISP does have some traffic limits, but I've not, as far as I know, broken them. It is worth thinking about.
