Subject: Blew my ethernet card out - fyi

AgentSmith ( ) posted Tue, 01 February 2005 at 12:28 AM · edited Sun, 02 February 2025 at 12:58 PM

My Ethernet card dies a few hours ago. ;o( It must have sustained download damage from when I was a Marketplace tester, lol... Just fyi, in case anyone has sent me an e-mail. (My ethernet cards "blow out" it seems, every 6 months or so, anyone else?) I'm using my girlfriends computer right now...man this keyboard sucks eggs. I'll have my own pc back tommorrow. Starting the Challenge vote page here in just a sec. ;o) AgentSmith

AS, strangely enough two guys i saw chatting on IRC just had to replace their ethernet cards. One wasn't even 6 months old so you are lucky in that way. Wonder why it is happening like this.

I have opinions of my own -- strong opinions -- but I don't always agree with them.

I've never really lost one, unless it was so old I could smell it... But I've mostly got onboard ethernet, no PCI cards left around here...

Hmm, my $10 ethernet card is going on a year of service with absolutely no problems :)

Aye, but for ten bucks, it's most likely not Gigabit? You know, 10/100/1000? A tenfold increase in speed is often worth the money...

Well some cards are just no good from the factory. When I worked at Gateway...(uggghhh!!! an aweful experience indeed) anyway as a QC I would test systems that were built and ready to send out the door and I had a ethernet card in a system ignite in flames on my work bench!!!! That was a brand new card. Lol....

AS, you've probably downloaded and downloaded and downloaded... You know, when you download, there's always stray bits which, in your case, filled the card up and it burst at the seams. Pure physics. Or not. :-)

you mean they still have 'bit buckets'?..;) As a longtime tech working with network cards, you're going to get the speed the network is on, regardless of what card you have (if you're on 10mbps, and you have a 100mbps card, you're only gonna get 10mbps)..so if your ISP has Gigabit access (if so, you're one lucky dawg..;) go for it.
Never seen a card catch fire, but I did have a UPS leak battery acid and catch fire (this at a nuclear plant, at that..;) and saw someone smoke a 386 by putting it in sideways (uhoh, just revealed my age..;)

I didn't think they'd allow Pakleds into nuclear plants. Not only will they try to steal the technology, they're likely to cause a meltdown in the process. blankstare.gif

believe me, after I finished security for it, I could've run for Office..;) I didn't have access to the Control Room (but I knew where the door was..;) It was just like working in a factory, except for the explosives sniffers, metal detectors, armed guards, turnstiles, and radiation safety classes..;)

What kind is it AS? And are you using the same PCI slot each time? You might be getting too much voltage to that slot if it is. I have a home built system that limps along cause dirty power zapped some onboard stuff. BUT I JUST BOUGHT A NEW LAPPY TOP!

Turns out, it may be my router (linksys). In fact, that's what I believe it was. "output 1" wouldn't work or light up when my cord was inserted, but will work in plugs 2-4. I did replace the ethernet card anyway, but I think its time for a new router. ;o( It's working, but my internet cuts out once in a while. I guess its time, its about 2 years old now.... AS
