Subject: Custom Starfields in 4.1

proteus ( ) posted Thu, 04 January 2001 at 8:58 PM ยท edited Wed, 01 January 2025 at 6:37 PM

Help me please. After upgrading from 4 to 4.1 I was anxious to try the new custom starfield and comet features. WELL, I tried holding down the Ctrl button while clicking ON the respective buttons in skylab only to find that nothing happened. All the other upgrade features seem to work well :) , but it's realy the starfield that I was looking forward to playng with. Corel has not answered ANY of my e-mails, I guess cause MetaCreations got my money and not them, I don't know. Can anybody help me with this. I would really appreciate it. Thanks

I have heard of it, how is it supposed to work?

proteus ( ) posted Thu, 04 January 2001 at 9:33 PM

It says to hold down the Ctrl button while clicking ON the Starfield or Comet buttons in skylab. This is supposed to open the new features. But I can't get the darn thing to do squat.

Yeah, same here. Where did you find the documentation for it?

I just checked Corel's web-site and there is a PDF that explains the features of the upgrade. About the Starfields and Comet's it say's that you can change them by dragging in their respective preview window's.Also say's something about a data file listing.

Yes I know. This is what it says in the "Whats New" option under help. Added custom starfield support and controls to sky model and SkyLab. Hold down the CTRL key while clicking either the "Starfield" or "Comets" button ON in the SkyLab. This will switch you to a custom starfield using the starcat.dat file located in the Data Folder. You can still control the intensity and amount of the stars just like as you can with the random starfields. When you adjust the amount upwards (adding stars) you will increase the number of stars that are increasingly dim as seen from earth. In other words, the stars are listed in the data file in order, from most bright to most dim. The actual intensity control merely lightens and darkens the stars evenly, without changing their relative intensities. To switch back to random stars, hold down the ALT/OPTION key while clicking either the "Starfield" or "Comets" button ON in the SkyLab. Additionally, if you hold down SHIFT, you will get the default random configuration (the one you get with a fresh, new sky). However, if you don't hold down SHIFT, you get a newly randomized set of stars and comets. Therefore, if you keep turning stars/comets on with just the ALT/OPTION key held down, you get a different configuration each time. You can keep switching back and forth from custom to random.

you need a starcat.dat file in the Data folder. You can create your own (good luck, that would take forever!) but I'm sure there are places to d/l them off the web. IMHO, I think they should have waited until version 5 to put this crap in. Bryce is all about user interface, and neither this nor the new light gradient feature has any user interface to speak of. Badly done, Corel.

I did a search and there is one in the Bryce4/Data/Starcat.dat. But how the heck are you supposed to access it?

Yeah the upgrade comes with the starcat.dat file. Something like 789 kb in size. That was the first thing I tried. I believe Flickerstreak was right when he said that these "NEW" features are crap. But what realy gets my goat is that Corel has NEVER even replied to any of my e-mails. I have been trying to contact them for about two weeks now. I suppose they have more important things to do than help their customers, or should I say help Metacreations old customers. They must have other things on their minds. I wonder what? Let's ask Marlen Cowpland, wife of Michael Cowpland, CEO of Corel Corp, pictured above
