Subject: Vote For March 2005's Artist of the Month!

Artist of the Month is highlighting a talented Renderosity artist that has been nominated by coords, mods, and admin and voted by the community. Recognition is given to this member for their collection of works for that year. Since we only select one AOM per month, it is not about their works for that particular month. Instead, it is about highlighting a talented artist's works for that year and they are recognized during that month.

Just wondering.... was looking at who is up for AOM. When was the last time one from the Photo gallery was in there? All I see is 3D rendering types.

LostPatrol ( ) posted Tue, 22 February 2005 at 6:11 AM

I made a vote foe Shelia's husband out of respect for her. I understand that the select a different gallery each month, but the system is flawed, there is no even balance. Just like the Hot hot 20 it as all down to votes for votes and comments for comments, too much good work goes unnoticed here and I am sure in other galleries too In a you scratch my back and I will scratch yours regime! Controversial and cynical I may be, but it is a fact! Enough said

Simon, well, thanks for the vote; i appreciate your thought. i wasn't trying to solicit votes for him...just wanted to share my excitement. what you said is sooooo true. Too much great work DOES go unnoticed around here, and that's one reason i'm so excited kemal has gotten this recognition. He's someone who spends a lot of time looking at images, but he doesn't always comment. he doesn't vote publically either. i'm just so happy his art has been recognized and wanted to share that. and what you said about comments for comments...well i admit that's the way i do it. i only have so much time for looking at galleries. i would love nothing more than to look at every single image posted and to comment on them, but i just don't have time. my thinking is that if you're gonna take the time to look and comment in my gallery, then i'm gonna do the same in yours. For me, i see it as respectful to do that. i know pretty much everyone else is like me in that they don't have time to look at all the galleries they'd like and make comments, so when someone does take the time to comment on my image, i wanna take the time to comment on their's. yes, you're right, Simon. it's a you-scratch-my-back & i'll-scratch yours regime. as for voting, i vote for an image if i really like it. i vote quite a bit. i don't do it to try to get other people to vote for my images, because frankly, i don't give crap about getting votes. It wouldn't bother me if no one ever voted for my images. I'm here to become a better photographer. i can't get better unless i get people into my gallery to make comments. And since i'm still a beginner and my work is not outstanding enough to get people into my gallery because i post such high quality stuff, the only way to get people to look at my work is to look and comment on their stuff. i mean let's face it, my photography is not that great, but for a beginner, i'd say it's not THAT bad (well maybe i'm wrong about that...LOL!) is it fair that i might have more comments in my gallery when someone else's work is like a 100 times better than mine? No, it's NOT fair. But like i said, i'm here because i really DO want to improve. i don't wanna be a mediocre photographer; i wanna be an outstanding one. i don't spend nearly as much time as i should on reading tutorials and manuals and stuff. and perhaps my time would be better spent on reading books and taking classes, but that's not how i work. i just kinda dive in and go for it, learning as i go. As for voting, I don't know what the guidelines are for voting. i guess everyone has their own idea about when to vote. as far as i know, RR hasn't set up guidelines for voting. perhaps i'm wrong. if an image moves me, i'll vote for it. if i think it's outstanding, i'll vote for it. maybe that's the wrong way, but screw it. i just vote for images i enjoy. that's me. anyway, dunno how my tone is coming across, but just to clarify, i'm not upset or anything. i'm just telling you the way i do it. maybe i sound a bit on the defensive, and perhaps i am. i'm not angry or upset or anything. i just wanted to share with you my thoughts on the subject. You know i like your "tell it like it is" attitude Simon; i always appreciate that. and i do agree with you that maybe the way i do things doesn't give enough respect for those artists who do incredible work. you're right. perhaps i need to tighten up how i vote...do it less frequently...i dunno. Perhaps i should comment in more people's galleries, but i only have so much time. one of my problems is that sometimes i look at images for a LONG time...not all of them, but a lot. sometimes i'll just absorb myself in an image and get lost there. i enjoy that, but it takes a lot of time. it means i have less time to look at other galleries. But i don't like to just take a quick peek at a piece of art; i really like to take my time with it, enjoy it, and try to understand what the artist was feeling and wanting to convey. i will you that when i comment on someone's image, i say what's in my heart. if they don't ask for critiques, i don't give any. i do know that you can be a totally outstanding artist in your field here and not be recognized. the only way to get recognition around here it seems is to get people to look into your gallery, and with RR being as big as it is, the more comments you leave, the more you will get. it's a flawed system, but that's how it seems to work around here. anyway, thanks for hearing me. hope i haven't come across as ranting. i do appreciate you being straight up about how you feel about all this. and i agree with what you said. But since i would be considered one of those "back-scratchers," i just wanted you why i do things the way i do. i'm not here to kiss anybody's a_s. I do try to honestly tell people what i like about their images. if you ask for a critique, i might make a suggestion. but since i'm just a beginner, i oftentimes don't feel comfortable making suggestions. sometimes i do give them if i feel like i can make one AND if i think the artist will appreciate my feedback. and if i vote for your image, it just means i really like it. i don't expect or want you to vote for mine just because i voted for yours. ok, i guess i said enough. Yikes, i apologize for writing a novel here. i find it difficult to be concise. thanks, Simon, for your honesty. i really do appreciate you saying what's on your mind. it is a flawed system.

DJB ( ) posted Tue, 22 February 2005 at 9:35 AM

Voting should be judged on how you percieve the artists capabilities, what you think of the quality of work. By just going and clicking on an artist without viewing the gallery is an injustice to the whole point of having this. cynlee was correct on the last photography one. * January - 2D * February - 3DS Max * March - Bryce * April - Cinema 4D * May - Fractal * June - Mixed Medium * July - ArtMatic, Mojoworld, Lightwave * August - Photography * September - Poser * October - Terragen * November - Vue * December - Writers

yes... would help to go to the link i posted rolls eyes...

my old boss use to tell me, if you have a problem you'd like to discuss with me on how things are done around here i am willing to listen but please have some solutions of your own ready,
if you have a better suggestion on how the GOM should be picked,
i can assure you there really are people up there who will listen... honest! :]

I agree Word for Word what Simon & Sheila said....muuuah!

LostPatrol ( ) posted Tue, 22 February 2005 at 11:52 AM

I have made suggestions and they all fell on deff ears, so IMO theres no point in spending more valuable tography time making more invisible suggestions I am well aware of how the system is run and IMO it is flawed on many levels. It is still a vote for vote scenario even with the RR GOM moreover each month it is only one genre involved, why not have it open to all genres every month, make it an even playing field. Or Have the members suggest artists galleries and the Mods judge the GOM These two suggestions I have made in the past silence! With regard to my vote, Bryce isnt my thing so it wouldnt matter who I voted for, I understand that there is allot of skill and talent involved. My vote reflected that I looked at them all. There were 2 or 3 that had way more votes than anyone else which probably illustrates a point. I have never voted for anything that I dont think is worthy and I never will, moreover I dont comment on an image if I dont like it just because the person has commented on mine. I go through the thumb gallery and view and comment on what I like. Its not a complicated process. This is all of course just my opinion, I have meant no offence to anyone, and offer my apologies to anyone that has been offended by my comments. LP PS Shelia please dont write so much lol

you didn't offend me, Simon. you never have. we're all different, and i can respect differences. sorry i wrote so much. sigh. i just said what i felt. i guess i feel too much. LOL. i have ADHD. i lose my train of thought easily sometimes. i ramble. and i can be very hyper...everything whirling in my mind real fast. it comes out when i write. it drives me crazy sometimes. and well, i can drive other people around me crazy. sorry guys. i have good days and bad days. today is one of those, "anybody got some Ritalin?" days. Nilla ( ) posted Tue, 22 February 2005 at 5:16 PM

Shelia did you know that if you have been diagnosed as having ADHD that you are considered handicapped and that there are grants out there especially for people like you to further their learning? Reason I mention it is because I did not find this out until recently, a friend of mine has ADHD and he takes medication to control it, the state also pays for him to attend college. Not that he needs to mind you, he is already a computer science engineer. Brenda :)

50.6kbps! back up to speed... for a tortise... no time to encourage or make suggestions... barely time to comment on what i like... & there's nothing for them to comment on in return... getting back to the initial announcement... if one has time one can vote on who they think really deserves GOM in Bryce out of the ones nominated... easy... (hugz sweet Sheila, good luck kermit) arrrrrrrrrrgh... i spoke too soon... as i write this i got knocked off again... back to 28.8... must be a storm brewing somewhere... pass the peacepipe... :]

Okay- Ive tried to voice my opinion here twice & it never posts....... why is that?

I'll try again....
What Lost is saying is very true and makes a lot of sense. Voting should be taken away from the members and let the people who are unbiased and know how to critique the artwork do the judging. This seems to be a lot more "Reciprocity" as opposed to "Renderosity" where people have admitted that they comment on images because the others comment on theirs. Members voting here would be like (the 12-16 yesr old age group) voting for "American Idol" where they will vote for their favorite(s) as opposed to the best performance.

Another thing to even the playing field might be to drop this from every month to maybe 4 times a year so the people judging wont go insane (or more insane). The AOM for Photography is really the AOY (artist of the YEAR). Give all trhe different mediums & the artists a better & more even chance.

One last suggestion I have is to not base anything on the number of viewings. Heck- don't even post now many viewings on teh page. A lot of members get real discouraged when their good work that something really went into itgets 1/8 the views of a snapshot. I have that quote by fellow member "RYNO" on my page- and I have received a lot of IM's from members who are ready to just give up but they see his quote- its true.

I understand that this would probably take some undoing & doing by the pooahs near the top of the rosity food chain. I'm just hoping someone will read this who has some say & gets an idea. GFor those who red it and disagree- I'll be waiting for the cannonballs to come flying over my bow.

I guess my question would be, where will you find this group of unbiased people, who know how to critique and who are cross-media experts? Realistically speaking, I'd be willing to bet (and I'm sure it's a safe bet) that high end of the skill and talent pool of the members far outweighs that of the admins/owners here (don't count the mods as they are members too). You'd have to pull the panel from within the membership. And there goes that whole unbiased part. -=>Donald

DeviousMoose ( ) posted Wed, 23 February 2005 at 12:00 AM

Good Point. But what I'm saying is that this really has to turn into less of a popularity contest- too many good artists are getting discouraged while mediocrity is getting the praise.

Mikey slips out of a side dorr as everything gets a bit high-brow (",)

TwoPynts ( ) posted Wed, 23 February 2005 at 3:50 PM

I agree with Devious. All of those artist nominated are very talented but it will probably end up being a popularity contest. I know it would be hard for me to chose based on skill. I'd have to say Orbitals work struck me because I'm interested in the subject matter. Anyway, good luck to those involved.
