Subject: Poser 6 and Millenium Figures

I'm so hoping that with Poser 6 we see the end of these interminable "PBMDC" channels with the Millenium figures. They are such a pain.

Ajax ( ) posted Wed, 02 March 2005 at 2:05 PM

Wouldn't count on it, but I agree with you.

I would actually like eto see an option to turn on cross talk and turn off cross talk like genitals :) but it is way too late to be asking for things for the release, but if it is not there maybe in the 1st SR :)

Well, wouldn't count on it, there are rumors that the Millenium figures will not work with Poser 6 at all.

In that case, people will be hanging on to their Poser 5 and demanding that the bugs in it be fixed irrespective of Poser 6. If CL thought that people would abandon their wardrobes of Vicky and Mike stuff for a Poser version increase, they would be seriously mistaken - but I'm sure they have more wisdom than that.

?

This is the first time that I've heard of such a "rumor".

If true, then a lot of other stuff wouldn't work in P6, either. Including many specialized figures.

Somehow, I don't think that Curious Labs would be that stupid. I'd give them a little more credit for brains than that.

CL may have made mistakes in the past but I'm sure they've not gone completely round the bend since P5 was released, they'd have to be nuts to not add support for the millenium figures in Poser6. So far every new version has been backwards compatible with earlier versions, if you look hard enough you might even find the Poser1 figures included in the Poser5 installation.

What MAY be true is that the DAZ figures probably won't work in the Face Room. That isn't because of any FEUD, that is because of the way Poser has ALWAYS worked. Morphs can only work if face geometry is the same from one character to another ... and the morphs in the Poser face room depend on specific geometry in order to work.

The same principle applies to any figure. A chest morph on V3 won't work on V2, because the geometry is different.

As regards to "feuds" and "rumors", it's always best not to spread rumors until you see the proof for yourself. 8-)

there are rumors that the Millenium figures will not work with Poser 6 at all. How? They like any other figure; obj file modified (morfed/ injected) w/ text files. Unless CL made RADICAL changes to the prog, I can't see Mil Figures not workin'. Otherwise, I can't see ANY existing content workin', & no matter what bitches I may have had w/ CL over P5 I can't believe they could be that stupid

The particular rumor I heard was that P6 won't support INJ and REM poses, which would certainly effect the mil figures more than anything else. For myself, I'll wait and see.

" ... P6 won't support INJ and REM poses ... "

That would be the crux of it, clearly. I could see why they would want that, as the INJ method is an abuse of what pose files were intended to do. But no-one is going to abandon all the Vicky3 and Mike3 stuff just yet. Oh - UNLESS the new P6 characters accept V3 and M3 clothes and textures, and are better meshes as well. Now that would be something!

In any case, you could just inject all the morphs, then save the character for use in P6 with the morphs already there. The gen 3 figures are hideously polygon fat so they'd be even more horrible to use with all the morphs preloaded. I find myself mostly using the RR versions anyway, so it wouldn't bother me that much. It'd be nice to get rid of all those horrible INJ/REM pose folders that take up my pose library.

If that were true, I suppose that we'd have to create our characters in P5 -- and then import them into P6.

I bet P6 SR1 will support INJ/REM. :)

It had better. In fact, the initial release had better support INJ/REM.

If it doesn't, then I suspect that quite a few of us will be more than just a little bit upset. We'd be pretty close to livid.

Much as I enjoy Poser, a move like that would be enough to get me seriously looking at D|S as an alternative. Message edited on: 03/03/2005 17:41

hauksdottir ( ) posted Thu, 03 March 2005 at 8:58 PM

That wouldn't bother me. I don't use INJ/REM and have been avoiding it like the damnable plague it is! (I did finally download the free V3 and M3, but haven't bothered to unzip them. I think one of the clothing converters uses them as seed files... and that will be the only reason to unzip them.) It was just another stupid idea from an arrogant company to crowd out anything made by anybody else through not only the sheer number of their files but also taking over the program to put their files in predominant position. Bloat? Sheer wallowing bloat! Reminds me of cowbirds and such who take over other birds' nests at the expense of the parent's own young. It may be a successful commercial tactic, but it stinks of rotten eggs to me. I think there is room for all figure makers and not just one company... and no figure maker ought to get preferred position or the entire enchilada. Even if the DAZ figures were perfect, I'd still hate the idea. However, this seems like an unsourced rumor probably being spread by people with their own agendas. Until the program is released, this is nothing but idle speculation. 🤷 Carolly

Thus far, we agree. My thoughts exactly.

As for the rest......I'll leave it lie.

Hoo, boy. No INJ poses would tick off a lot of people who are now used to using them in their products. But I could see CL accidentally breaking it, like they did when they fixed the crosstalk problem.

Well, I guess we'll find out soon...

Ghostofmacbeth ( ) posted Fri, 04 March 2005 at 9:50 AM

Yep, it would tick off a lot of people. I prefer not to have 150MB people when I am working with things. That is the sole reason for them.

XENOPHONZ ( ) posted Fri, 04 March 2005 at 11:04 AM

Quashing INJ/REM would be about 2 degrees less stupid than somehow magically disabling the Mil figures. Seeing as how literally tons of Poser items now depend upon the INJ/REM system.

Arrogant or not, the system works.

Yes.....count me among the great majority that would be seriously ticked off to discover that my runtime full of character poses didn't work in P6.

I hope e-Frontier is a little more open to what the users want than CL has been. MAT files are a wonderful thing. Yet they partially broke them with P5. I'm sure it wasn't intentional, but they did. Would be nice to have actual, official support for MAT files, INJs, and other useful and widely used "hacks."

Tyger_purr ( ) posted Fri, 04 March 2005 at 2:06 PM

randym77: Questions How did P5 break MAT files? (I've only used P5 so I'm wondering what I am missing) What would CL need to do that would "officialy support" MAT and INJ? (there are MAT files for P5 people included with P5 they can hardly deny they exist.)

Ghostofmacbeth ( ) posted Fri, 04 March 2005 at 2:10 PM

There aren't MAT pose files though. Just the MATerials things which is their "fix" for the "hack" that is MAT poses. The biggest break I see is the changing of the material room so none of the old stuff worked right, without adjustment.

Tyger_purr ( ) posted Fri, 04 March 2005 at 2:45 PM

in: RuntimelibrariesPoseP5 Mat PosesDon Mat Poses there are: Don Mat Hi.p2z Don Mat Lo.p2z DonBlueEyeHi.p2z DonBlueEyeLo.p2z DonGreenEyeHi.p2z DonGreenEyeLo.p2z and more. likewise there are directories for judy and the kids. Are these not Mat pose files? I'v been wrong before but i dont recall downloading them from anywhere, so i am sure they were installed with P5. The only "break" i am aware of is that bump maps don't connect.

Ghostofmacbeth ( ) posted Fri, 04 March 2005 at 2:53 PM

Ahhh ... Not sure. I deleted all of the P5 content an hour after had the program but I thought they just provided the MATerial files. That is the biggest one. I am not much of an expert on P5 but the values also messed up the MAT poses and the transparancy things had issues as did ambient stuff.

Tyger_purr ( ) posted Fri, 04 March 2005 at 3:01 PM

that people belive mat files were not there makes me wonder if they were a part of that sr3 figure update.

Something just occured to me. these are p2z files....compressed pose files (compression is new in P5 right?) .... I dont know of any mat pose maker that can make compressed files (am i wrong?)....I wonder if a mat pose maker is one of those features that wasn't ready for P5 but might just make in in P6... i guess we may find out on the 10th.

Ajax ( ) posted Fri, 04 March 2005 at 3:27 PM

Broken MAT poses: Specifically you can no longer make MAT poses that change a subset of the aspects of one material. For example, in P4 it's possible to make a MAT pose that will turn transparency on and off without altering any of the transparency maps or texture maps. That is not possible in P5. The way ambient settings and bump maps work could have been handled a lot better, but I wouldn't call it broken. I don't think I'd miss INJ/REM at all actually. I agree with Carolly that the generation 3 mil figures are bloated. They don't need all those polygons. I hope DAZ reduces the polygon count for the gen 4 figures.

As much as I support CL against their detractors (and I do) -- if INJ/REM is somehow disabled or defeated in P6 -- CL will be hearing about it.

From me, among many others.

And that's a Gua-ran-tee.

Frankly, the thing that irritates me the most are petty turf battles between companies that should be cooperating with one another.

The companies in question enhance one another's business. Whether they like it or not, they are closely tied to one another.

Attempts by one to "hurt" the other would only result in damaging themselves in the process.
