Subject: Request to merchants about file/directory structure...again....

guslaw ( ) posted Sun, 06 March 2005 at 11:25 AM · edited Sat, 23 November 2024 at 11:16 AM

I just purchased an add-on texture pack for a clothing item (by a different merchant). Part of the package was an additional bonus set of textures and I thank the merchant for those. The base pack consists of nothing but textures and MAT pose files to apply the textures in a Runtime/Library/Pose/Folder Name and the textures are in a Library/Texures/Merchants Name folder. That seems to be common practice, I understand and I see basically nothing wrong with that. The additional bonus textures, again nothing but textures and MAT pose files to apply the textures to the SAME clothing item, are in a different Runtime/Library/Pose/Different Folder Name with the textures also in a Library/Textures/Merchants Different Folder name. Is that really necessary? Why couldn't they have been set up to unzip into the SAME folders? Don't merchants understand that theirs are not the only Pose, Texture, whatever folders and that most, if not all, Poser users already have overly large and bloated Runtime directories, especially Pose folders.? Every little bit helps... end of rant.

Here's the thing as I see it. Unless you can get the entire lot of us to agree on a library folder naming standard, there are always going to be a great deal of folks who are unhappy with how things are named. There is just no way to make everyone happy all the time..or even most of the time when it comes to things like this. Folks really need to understand this, and accept the fact that they will have to organize thier own folders they way that makes the most sense to them. IMO, these rants (not just yours; I see so many of these peppered throughout the forums) are vents of unnecessary frustration about unrealistic expectations.

This is not about library folder naming standards and I said so.

"That seems to be common practice, I understand and I see basically nothing wrong with that."

This is about the SAME merchant putting an extension for his(her) add-on product, an extension that is only available if you purchase the original add-on product, and both of which are for the SAME item, into DIFFERNTLY named folders.

That, in my opinion, is just being thoughtless and inconsiderate. (Maybe that's a bit strong, but still...) Edited to fix stupid typos (someday I'll learn how to type)

guslaw; I just think it's not worth the stress of getting all worked up about. Lilybelles; nice idea, but not bloody likely >^_~

I'm curious to see if Poser 6 makes any further improvements to the library system. Poser 5 allowing sub directories was a huge improvement. Faster loading and some sort of search capabilities would be nice.

Xena ( ) posted Sun, 06 March 2005 at 3:25 PM

Yeah, nice idea if you can get every merchant across all the stores (big and small) to agree to a specific set of rules. Unfortunately Guslaw, this kind of thing is always going to happen :( I do agree with you though, if it's a product by the same merchant, for the same outfit, it's really seems redundant to add another folder unless there is already 256 items in the first folder (I think that's the limit on folder items).

Momcat: I can dream can't I? You know, sunny Summer days when I could be outside listening to the larks and skipping with bunnies instead of renaming all my blooming Poser folders ;) Don't try and visualise this, it's way too scary...

" unless there is already 256 items in the first folder (I think that's the limit on folder items)." Oh don't get me started! Now THAT is something that drives me bananas. Install a pose pack and there are so many poses in the one folder that there are no longer any icons, just narrow strips with maybe half the pose name...if it doesn't crash Poser just to open the library >_< ::reeeeally HATES Mega-Packs for a variety of reasons::

guslaw ( ) posted Sun, 06 March 2005 at 3:38 PM

Momcat, ...now who's getting worked up? LOL :) btw Xena, not even close to the 256 limit - 20 some odd items in each folder...

I'd prefer to have my products unzip into one main folder with subs for each separate product. but for add-ons or updates i'd put them in the same folders...no problem with that. Mega Packs? Well mine are small due to the upload size limit. I still don't see how some folks get so many great products in one zip without sacrificing quality over size...sigh.

Well I for one am trying to change my set up. My new Dollar Hair for Dave gets installed into the 'Chracters : DAZ Hair' Folder, but on my poser installation my daz hair folder is inside of a DAZ folder cause I like to group my poser items together, so mine looks like DAZ -DAZ HAIR ---DAVE ---Freak ---Kids ---Mike ---Steph ---Victoria -DAZ PEOPLE ---Victoria -----Victoria Clothing ---------Morphing Clothes ---------3rd Party ---Mike -----Mike Clothing -----etc,,,,,,, So I am constaltly in the poser folders rearranging stuff, so everything follows my folder set up. But every 3rd party thing I make from this day forward(well last week forward)_ will try to be in teh same set up as the origional creators set up.

hmm, just looked it up... I have 2248 folders/subfolders in my textures directory. yeesh!

AlleyKatArt ( ) posted Tue, 08 March 2005 at 10:27 AM

I try to keep all my texture products in one folder, with subfolders for individual items. I find this cuts down on clutter, makes it easier for ME to find my stuff. And if I have a hard time finding it in the mess that others make, imagine how customers feel...

lots and lots of runtimes is the key with good titles but for people as lazy as me, well the lazy factor gets in the way of progress! :-P ~Dag~

And don't forget about Poser 4 users - we don't have subfolders and only 1 runtime!! And us Mac users don't even have any of the neato utilities.

odeathoflife ( ) posted Wed, 09 March 2005 at 2:10 PM

I have been considering making a different runtime for different companies but I think that it would be just about the same set up but also would have to go up to teh root of hte library to change figures. a couple extra clicks to my already over clicked index finger.
