Subject: (Serious) Most Frequent Questions for Poser?

DCArt ( ) posted Tue, 08 March 2005 at 10:34 AM · edited Fri, 22 November 2024 at 2:55 PM

Hey there, guys and gals!

I'm trying to work up a list of the most frequently asked questions for Poser. I've already thought of some myself:

  1. Why does the figure disappear when I put clothes on?
  2. Why is everything all gray? The thumbnails show colors!
  3. How do I make my own textures?
  4. How do I make my own clothing?
  5. Why are there holes in the clothing?
  6. I made a custom character. How do I get the clothes to fit?
  7. Where do I put files so that things work right?
  8. How do I make a character of myself?
  9. How do I delete all of the lights?
  10. How do I make a UV template?
  11. How come the feet stick to the ground after I pose a figure?
  12. I made my own head morph. Why does the head explode when I dial it in?

Any others? I'm working on something that will hopefully address the majority of them. 8-)

OK, I guess I'll confess ... I hope it's not premature, as it's not "official" yet ... I've written some books in the past, mostly on Web design (LOL which is REALLY where my head was NOT. I am mainly a graphic artist). For the past four years I have really been wanting to write a Poser book. I mean, REALLY BAD! And I've really tried to get publishers interested in one. I joined the Poser community four years ago, but I've been working with Poser since release 1. I am just as lovingly addicted to the program as everyone here. It's a hobby and passion all in one for me. And I've done a lot behind the scenes for the community. Well, my wish may shortly come true. I was very recently approached by a publisher who wants me to do a Poser book. I'm in the process of working up an outline, and I want to answer as MANY questions as possible in this book. Allotted space won't permit me to address ALL of them, so I have to try to put in the most bang for the buck, and cover what Poser users need to learn most. I want this to be a book that people can really USE. 8-)

I think transparencies, eyelashes and hair are asked about quite a bit...and how they transport to other apps. (Just my two cents...good luck!) Ah Doc...I hit the first button and nothing happened. I hit the second version and it linked straight to my gallery...what's the deal??? ;-) thanks always! -jay

A couple more, related to animation 16. Why does my figure go all pretzely after I move one limb? 17. Why does my finished animation look like the preview, with no transparencies? 18. I rendered straight to MPG from Poser, why does the result look crappy?

You might want to check out my two 10 Tips for Poser Beginners tutorials here on Renderosity and see if there's anything in there that might be good for your list. Adjusting the default camera focal length and raising Shadow map quality for clear (and not so dark) shadows are two that should be addressed if possible. Good luck to you! Take care. SnowS

Good one, FreeBass! I had thought of discussing the various formats, but didn't think about them in terms of Runtime cleanup. I like that idea!

Thank you so much, everyone, for your input. I really appreciate it! And SnowSultan, thank you SO much for pointing out your files. That was very gracious of you!

This is a day for mixed feelings for me. On one hand, I am excited about this opportunity. On the other hand, my mother is in the hospital (3rd time in the last 15 months), and her condition is shaky. It's not looking good. This is helping me keep my sanity.

(hugs) .. Thanks everyone. This means more to me than you know.

A few more possibilities for hair and clothing.

a) What is the difference between conforming and dynamic clothing

b) Same idea as "a)' only with hair

c) When I Pose my figue, the clothing dosen't move (re: dynamic clothing)

d) When I run "calculate simulation" in the Cloth Room with xxxx (insert a conforming clothing item in place of xxxx), the simulation calculation never ends. Why?

e) When I double click on xxxx (replace xxxx with hair figure, or conforming clothing), the item doesn't show up on my figure and sometimes the figure deforms. Why?

f) When I move my Poser figure, the conforming hair and clothing don't move with it, why?

g)Why do body parts poke through the conforming clothing?

h) Why doesn't clothing article xxx fit figure yyy properly? (replace xxx with a conforming clothing item made for a figure other than figure yyy).

PS: Congratulations on the book, and good luck!

Poser KEEPIN' yr sanity? Thas a 1st... Best wishes & hugses to Mom 8-)<< LOL Yeah, it does. Actually it's helped me through tough times more than once. 8-) I used to work for a really cool software company, in their training department. There was a huge layoff just before Christmas of 2000 ... and a substantial percentage of the company was laid off, including 5 of 7 in the training department. I ENGROSSED myself in Poser after that. Totally. It was right about the time that Michael and Victoria 1 were starting to become popular ... and to heal my wounded heart (LOL) I did a render that, to this day, I still think is one of the best I've ever done. I've even come a long way since then, thanks to folks in this community, but Poser helped me through that rough time. Yeah, really it did! That's one of the best things about Poser ... actually about art in particular. It's a great way to demonstrate the feelings you have going on inside. 8-) And ... here's that render. I guess it applies just as well to my current situation, so I dug it out. 8-)
