we were talking a month or so ago about backing up images. We just got this LinkStation yesterday. It was a bit expensive, but i'm glad we got it!!! seems like a good solution for us.

gulp over $200??? Crikey..... I mean, I know it's ease-of-use and all that, but for the difference in price I'd be happy to have a spare hard drive on the lowest-used computer in the network and just plough the pics onto that. If you want portability, leave the side off the computer case ;-) (",)

yeah, Mike, we've already done that. This device is a backup of our backups which are already backed on 3 hard-drives and partially on DVDs. Get it??? got it? Good! LOL! We're not Paranoid...just wanna have 5 or 10 or 20 backups!! LOL! :)

Heck- you wouldnt even need a hard drive on a separate computer or server. You can add a secondary hard drive on the existing computer for your images at a lot less cost or a lot more storage. If you dedicate that drive for your photos, the chances of viruses to damage the files would be minimal unless you saved an image that contained a virus. Also for backups, usually 2 on a different media (CD, DVD, Zip) are typically enough. The main thing to remember is to keep them at different locations. These media could always be copied if one (the other) was damaged.

thanks Devious!!! yeah, we could have added a 2ndary hard drive, but we wanted this portable storage unit. we will take it with us when we go on our long vacations so we can back up our images. i think we took 2,000 photos during our 2003 vacation. it would have been nice to have this then to back everything up. we hate backing up on CDs. takes forever!!!!
