I've been working on this image with two P51 Mustangs flying over some islands. I'm trying to create the illusion of height and it just doesn't look right to me. The image looks flat, no depth to it. Any ideas on what I need to do to make this image look better???

To me you are not far away. It LOOKS high already. Only the background (the islands i think) is too regular spread out. No dynamic in there, nothing where the eye can have a point to identify what it is and how big things are. Maybe some bigger islands and not so many, maybe a ship that the viewer can see and has something to compare sizes. A big tanker for example. We know how big it really is and then can compare how high we must be so that is looks small. Kenwas for example is a master of playing with depth. There we all can learn a lot about that. And Criss3d too, his panoramic landscapes are perfect to study this.

One day your ship comes in - but you're at the airport.

D-Day Mustangs, European theater, North sea/ English channel is a green-grey, maybe between clumps of islands are looking at a flightline of about 12000' to 15000' Looks good R

Prolly not much help, perhaps use depth of field to blur out the oceans / island.

Thanks for all the advice. I'm going to reduce the number of islands and change the color/texture of the water. Maybe add a tanker as well, we will see how it comes out.

There is also a problem of scale between the islands and the waves. If, like I am assuming, the black spots are supposed to be islands, then the waves seem as large as most of them, which would translate in some kind of tsunami down below. At that altitude, waves should be no more than just little white specks.

Here is an example of what I mean. Look at this picture - the waves are already very small and the island is still quite big in the picture.

Ahh, I see your point. The waves do look kind of large now that I compared it to the image in the link. I'll have to fix that too. See, I'm glad I posted it in the forum!!! Thanks everyone!!!

Saw your pic in: http://www.renderosity.com/messages.ez?ForumID=12368&Form.ShowMessage=2168610&Reply=2172445#61 and have to say: WHAT AN IMPROVEMENT!!! Actually to me there is nothing to complain about! Or well, one thing ;-): Maybe your can blur the propeller of the right Mustang a little bit more (but don't ask me how...) Mike

creed - could you post your improved picture here instead of that other discussion ? That way it will be a lot easier to see the improvement and make additional comments.

Sure!!! I'll attach the image here. Does any one know where I can get a model of a battle cruiser??? I think that's the one missing piece. Thanks for the compliment Mike!!

Did you look at places like 3D cafe ?

They seem to have some battleships (as long as they are not in .max format, you should be all set... unless of course you do have 3DS max).
