Subject: torn between colour and toning...

Sometimes the colour seems so vibrant that toning makes me feel like an image has more impact.I do love rusty colours and textures, but felt this slight sepia gave the antique feel more appropriate.

Right out of camera version...

I like both but I would have to lean towards the toned version. seems more "old".

I like both! But that doesn't help you decide does it?

Zacko ( ) posted Wed, 16 March 2005 at 12:10 PM

LOL...i like both too. But if I had to choose it would be the toned one. The textures are so much more obvious, and the tone is also just perfect...yep: COLOURED IT IS...if you ask me that is #:op

How come we say 'It's colder than hell outside' when isn't it realistically always colder than hell since hell is supposed to be fire and brimstone?

tough choice... for me i luv color... would work it up graphically & take out the sky, have it sit on a rust colored background with the bluegrey to use for line/font/accent cuz you know i like to play :]

tvernuccio ( ) posted Wed, 16 March 2005 at 12:34 PM

i luv both, doug! i'm really still in my vibrant color mood. tractors...sigh...how i luv them! what bothers me about the colored one is the sky. for me, it's too intense and takes away from rich colors in the tractor. in this case, i would go with the toned version. it makes that shadow across the dashboard stand out more, and the sky this way doesn't take anything away from the machinery. toned gives it a more antique feel i think. this is a treasure!!!

Onslow ( ) posted Wed, 16 March 2005 at 12:40 PM

Gawd !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! not more tractors --- thought I got away from them when I finished work. LOL. OK - I prefer the toned one I feel it portrays the textures better than the coloured. For me personally the colour takes over and I don't see the texture quite as much.

Funny sheila...that is waht bothers me about the colour one too.Sky ruined it in MHO

ReBorneUK ( ) posted Wed, 16 March 2005 at 12:52 PM

brmmmmmmmmm.............chug chug..... he he he Dougieboy, it simply HAS to be the sheer gritty realism of the rust in the coloured version. To me the first one just looks like a photo of a tractor steering wheel, leaves me wondering what the point of the picture was.... The colour one gives you a hit of "ugh!" It evokes memories that awful, gut wrenching moment when you look under the car and see that your property is in the process of decay and there's nothing you can do about it.... in effect a symbol of your own mortality.... reminds you that no matter what you do or how wrapped up in yourself you are, time marches on..... cynlee ( ) posted Wed, 16 March 2005 at 12:53 PM

...that's why'd i'd take it out... but would make a terrific 3d-look cutout layout :] oooooooh... but that's not posh photo etiquette purity :p hehe

ebsmooth ( ) posted Wed, 16 March 2005 at 12:59 PM

imho db, i like the sepia tone! you captured the color very well and they're very crisp and clear but for my money b/w or sepia is the way to go as i think it offers more of a classic days of old feel to it!!! aside from the nostalgic point of view, toned images show off more deail between light and shadow...but again that's just my humble opinion!!! eb

TwoPynts ( ) posted Wed, 16 March 2005 at 1:01 PM

I agree. Both are great, but the colored sky=too distracting. I think you chose correctly posting the toned version.

I'm late AGAIN! But for what it worth, I too prefer the toned one! I almost always do though! It adds such a fantastic atmosphere to almost any shot! Toned it is for me too! :)

Oooooh! I like that very much Cyndi!!!

cynlee ( ) posted Wed, 16 March 2005 at 2:50 PM

ty, mmmm... i tried the cut out version with a drop shadow toward the upper left on a toffee color, with a gray border... interesting look... maybe doug can just go back & get one from another angle without the sky to bring out that great contrasting orange/blue color :]

TwoPynts ( ) posted Wed, 16 March 2005 at 2:55 PM

I like what you did Cyn...no more distracting blue! :)

TwoPynts ( ) posted Wed, 16 March 2005 at 2:57 PM

If you really want to push yourself Doug, you could try selecting the rust only to keep that saturated color then B&W the rest of the image with a very slight cold blue tint. I know, I know...like you have the time for that... ;] --Kort

would be a fun project for the forum... on another photo... can use cropping, tones, additions, subtractions, etc... call it "Save this Shot!" hehe :]

DJB ( ) posted Wed, 16 March 2005 at 3:02 PM

I was going to say....cynlee you can spend the time doing that..LOL.. Hey that gives it a nice effect. I should try too...but if I don't do stuff like that withing the first few days...it's so far gone out my memory... Thanks for that idea....et al

QUOTE : "I like what you did Cyn...no more distracting blue! :)" TeePee, once again I have to be an annoying little twerp, and point out that you are wrong.... if you look at the dashboard surround in Cyn's colouration, it is indeed.... blue. And I (being the contrary little wonka that I am) find blue dashboards annoying, therefore proving that your statement is blown, pardon the French, to hell. (",)

My mistake...so glad you are here to point these things out Mike. No more distracting Sky Blue/Cyan. An the dashboard is subtle enough that it doesn't bug me, but then, I'm not you. If I was, I'd be perfect and spell things properly on the first go-round. ;]

p.s. Perfection is a lonely place..... sigh p.p.s. And if you were me, you'd just edit your post and spell it right to make me look stupid. But I, of course, have now pre-emted that move. Ha!
