Subject: Newb Question: Hair

All my hair is wrong: it all appears like rectangular strips of hair material, but not individual strands, and so looks more like wood shavings than hair. This is the same for human hair as it is for animal hair, like horses manes. What am I doing wrong?

Are you using dynamic hair or trans mapped? If you could post a pic of what's going on that would help alot.

Also, are you talking about the preview or the actual render?

Thanks for the replies.

I've been getting this problem with hair props (I haven't got into the complexities of growing my own hair). I find Paradise Hair illustrates the problem particularly well, but I get it with everything that I have tried so far. I've attached the picture. Here I've changed the display to Texture Shaded and reduced the transparency in Materials to 0.

I also get the same problem with the horse. In this image I've changed no settings, but the display by default is Texture Shaded. Rendering, even in production mode, doesn't remove the strips.

Ok the first thing is that if you're turning the transparency to 0 then the trans maps wont 'shade out' the transparent parts of the object. If you're doing this before your renders this alone could be why your hair is looking like strips of cloth. Don't worry if your hair looks transparent in the preview, the trans map will take care of whats supposed to be what. If this isn't then case, then humm, any other takers
