Subject: Cut and Paste...WOW!

ming ( ) posted Thu, 17 March 2005 at 5:39 PM · edited Sat, 30 November 2024 at 5:28 AM

I never knew about the Cut and Paste tools in P4.
They're friggin GREAT!
I can finally get socks to fit scaled figures.
I learned about it from "VTC.com".
Basic stuff for a lot of aps.
I learned some great stuff about Rhino too.

Sorry. I'm just so excited.

Please don't apologize for your enthusiasm. It's great to see positive postings here. :-) I'll take a look at vtc.com later, I'd like to know more about using copy/paste in the way you mention. I find the feature useful when fitting props with morphs that match those of the figure. For example, the Millennium Beard or some hair props. Copy the head, paste to the hair or beard prop ... bingo! For some reason doing this and then parenting the prop sometimes yields better fits than simply conforming the prop. I have no idea why.

I also would like to know more about cut and paste, which tut is it. Sharen

FYI, if you copy any body part, prop, light, whatever in poser, then paste into a text editor, you'll get all the info in text form. Some people use it for bizarre operations in Excel, I believe. mac

Hmmm, does whatever this is, work in Poser 5? If so can someone provide a link to the tutorial or some instructions here, with a bit more information on when to use it? I'm still having trouble getting some things to fit like shoes... ugh. Maybe this is the answer that I need to be able to put shoes/boots on characters?

I haven't tried it with boots/shoes yet. But it worked great with the V2 conforming socks.
VTC.com. $30 per month. Many, many tuts, for many apps (basics).

They have some samples you can check out.

ming, where ya been? :) Its very useful for copying magnets settings and locations from one object to another. Want to reverse a magnet? copy it, paste in text editor, change the xTrans from positive to negative (or the reversal) and then click on the magnet part and paste it back in.

Magnets are my kryptonite!

Smoovie ( ) posted Thu, 17 March 2005 at 10:20 PM

I've been using VTC for about a year now. I highly recommend it.

I'm confused. I know that site is for online courses. However, there is nothing there pretaining to Poser 5 that I can see. I think I checked that site last year and asked about Poser 5 tutorials but they weren't offering them. And I don't see Poser listed at all in the menu. Besides, I'm off work right now and unfortunately my budge doesn't allow me to join a pay to use site.

You copy and paste the pose and dial settings from the body part to the corresponding body part of the clothing. The link has videos of apps. It has a tut on "Copy and Paste" in the Poser tut.

Acadia ( ) posted Thu, 17 March 2005 at 11:23 PM

" You copy and paste the pose and dial settings from the body part to the corresponding body part of the clothing." That's it? Just go dial to dial and copy dial settings from the body part to the corresponding body part of the clothing? I've been doing that on some things already, but haven't tried it on shoes yet. I've used it mostly on the chest area of the figure and clothing and where I want symmetry. I'll have to try it with shoes too. So they are now offering Poser 5 courses?

hehe, just in time for Poser 6 :) I gather all tutorials are a version behind?

Most of my products use the copy/paste function for parameter dial settings. As maclean mentioned, you can copy via your system clipboard to and from external applications, such as my products, a spreadsheet, etc, either to manipulate the values in various ways, or examine or save them as text. One strange development was when the Poser 5 SR4 patch suddenly added a number to the end of each data line (for most head dials it was 42). Fortunately, I was able to add the 42 to each line so it worked for the patched Poser 5, yet still worked for Poser 4 and ProPack. I've asked CuriousLabs if the cut and paste capability is retained in Poser 6 and keeping my fingers crossed. My workflow would take a heavy hit if I lost all the shortcuts I've developed using it - Elisa/gryffnn

Ok, I'm trying really hard to visualize this...how do I cut and paste from the dials? I tried to highlight the dial but it didn't work...do I just copy the numbers from, say, the hip on a character and past it into the hip of a skirt that's not cooperating?

ming ( ) posted Fri, 18 March 2005 at 11:36 AM

You click on the hip of the character. Then click on "copy" . then click on the hip of the skirt and click "paste". The specific body part, dial settings and pose will be transfered. You still have to set "body" Scale,X,Y,Z settings by hand.

ming ( ) posted Fri, 18 March 2005 at 11:45 AM

I'm wrong about the "body". Where it says the character and body part under the render screen, click on body, "copy", change character, click "paste".

gryffnn ( ) posted Fri, 18 March 2005 at 7:57 PM · edited Fri, 18 March 2005 at 7:59 PM

cedarwolf, here is an example of two of the data lines you get when you select a figure's head and pick Edit/Copy from the menu, then paste into a text file:

Head 0 Blink Right Linear -0.0500 42
Head 0 Blink Left Linear 0.0000 42
(etc. - rest of body part's parameter dials)

  • Blink Right and Blink Left are the morph dial names
  • Linear is the animation interpolation style set for this frame (Spline, etc.)
  • 0.0000 and -0.0500 are the values set on the dials
  • 42 is the number appended by Poser 5 SR4 (absent in Poser 4 and ProPack)

You don't see any of this of course, if you merely cut/paste settings from one eye to the other, for example. Remember that sometimes when you do it between opposite body parts, mirrored magnets, etc. you have to change the signs on one or more dials between positive and negative to match the settings (for xtrans to move eyes together, or yrot to twist arms forward, etc.).

BTW, I just got an amazingly fast reply from Colin in Curious Labs tech support saying that he did a quick test in Poser 6 and Cut and Paste seems to work fine, but that he query in to the engineering staff to see if we changed that functionality in any significant way.

So I'm hopeful that we can keep using this great capability! ALSO very encouraged by the responsiveness of the CL people. HTH - Elisa/gryffnn

Copy & Paste from the Key Frame Editor to get multiple bodyparts or whole scenes.

Some other tricks if you paste to a spreadsheet:

Yeah, but that's only good if you know anything about spreadsheets. :)
