Thu Mar 17, 9:43 AM ET Entertainment - Reuters Industry By Jeffrey Goldfarb BERLIN (Reuters) - Random House is exploring new ways to sell bestsellers, but the world's biggest book publisher sees no reason to tinker with the paperback mystery and thriller format despite a lack of growth. Chief Executive Peter Olson said on Thursday even though rivals have blamed a decline in U.S. mass market paperback sales for their profit falls and the flatness of the $55 billion consumer book publishing sector, he is not convinced that reinventing the format is the answer. I personally don't see mysteries/suspense/thrillers ever going completely away as a genre....like all things, fads come in and out, but the basic market is there. It is interesting to consider, however, that just as some movies do better in a non-U.S. marketplace, it may be true for books as well, since it appears that the book market is flourishing elsewhere.
