Subject: Poser 5 to Poser 6 Upgrade Question.

Jovial ( ) posted Wed, 30 March 2005 at 3:45 PM · edited Tue, 26 November 2024 at 8:45 PM

Hi, Anyone have experience of upgrading Poser 5 to Poser 6? Does Poser 5 still work after the upgrade? What I means is, does the upgrade/install of Poser 6 licensing somehow affect the registry and / or licensing of Poser 5? I have my huge downloaded upgrade file for Poser 6 but I'd like to know if I would be doing something that would be hard to undo. As a side note. I can't believe that CL didn't test a PZ3 scene with a load of figures to check that Poser 6 was at LEAST as capable as Poser 5. Oh well. So much for software testing. Thanks for any advice or info. Jovial.

The Poser 6 install is totally seperate from your Poser 5 install. I didn't see any affect on my P5 install at all after installing Poser 6. They go into seperate directories, seperate registry entries, etc... The P6 "Upgrade" is really a full install.

No, my P5 install is still there and I just checked - it still works. The P6 upgrade is actually a full version, the only difference is that it costs less. The software itself is identical. It installs to Curious LabsPoser6 and so doesn't change P5 (which is safely out of the way in Curious LabsPoser5).

Hi Melen, Thanks for the info. Does Poser 5 still run after the install of Poser 6? Also did you have to manually link the Poser 5 runtimes into Poser 6 or was Poser 6 install aware of the Poser 5 content? Thanks again.

You do have to link the runtimes manually. (the same way as in Poser 5). It installs with just the default runtime and one called Downloads (again, just like P5. The Winter Queen is a separate installer that will ask you if you want it in the default P6 runtime, and if you say No then you can direct it where to install it.

P5 works fine after installing P6.
The "upgrade" to P6 is really a full copy at a better price (which is why you needed to enter your P5 serial when ordering).

If you're running Windows, then the only thing that will change is that P6 will be associated with PZ3 files for opening when you double click.
There are no other changes in the registry that I've been able to find (no entries period, other than file associations).

If your going to be using PZ3 in both P5 and P6 you'll want to turn off the creation of External Binary Morph Files (.PMDs)

There are no other changes in the registry that I've been able to find (no entries period, other than file associations). The above is almost certainly correct information. Apart from one obscure registry key (which I think was concerned with the activation security in early versions of Poser 5), somewhat surprisingly the only registry keys that get added during installation of Poser 5, are merely file association keys. From the comments above, it would appear that Poser 6 follows a similar pattern of installation.
