Subject: question to the modelers/morphers

unzipped ( ) posted Fri, 01 April 2005 at 1:55 PM · edited Sun, 17 November 2024 at 1:32 PM

For those of you who do modeling/morphing of items for use in Poser - what to you use to do it? Poser supplied tools (magnets, face room, etc?) Another application (wings, maya, whatever)? Do you find certain applications better for creating morphs vs. creating figures? Also what tool/approach would you recommend for a modeling/morphing beginner? Thanks for any and all insights, Unzipped

I like using trueSpace cause you can import the whole figure and work on the whole figure at once then break it apart to export the various body parts for morphs once the whole mesh is altared. Bur I also use it for character creation...I am quite biased LOL I also use the poser magnets just cause they are already available in poser.

I model in 3d max, but I mostly use Anim8or to make morphs. It has the great advantage of not changing anything in the obj (other than what you change), so the morphs are always 100% compatible with poser. mac

lightwave and/or poser magnets depending on the project

My experiences with Poser's magnets have been less than pleasant.

Follow up question - do any of the other applications have some sort of symmetry or mirroring functionality so that you can "copy" adjustments from one area to another mirrored area? Like if you create a morph for, say, the left ear you can apply it to the right ear?

Lightwave 8.2, and poser to mix morphs occasionally.

Way too many people take way too many things way too seriously.

I use magnets when I can, make them in Max when I have to. With its adjustable fall-off for moving vertexes, you can do nice work in Max. I find Max 100% compatable with Poser, other than the scale factor (I work 1000X) and the scaling bug in the Habaware OBJ exporter.

Cinema 4D (if I need to twiddle indivual vertices) or Poser magnets, depending on the situation... sometimes Poser magnets are just easier to use - once you get used to them.

Cinema4D Plugins (Home of Riptide, Riptide Pro, Undertow, Morph Mill, KyamaSlide and I/Ogre plugins) Poser products Freelance Modelling, Poser Rigging, UV-mapping work for hire.

Wow - so many good responses and most of them different, thanks all. It looks like I may have to give Poser's magnets another look since so many of you have used them successfully. I guess I don't find the whole grouping, apply magnet, adjust zones (etc.) workflow real intuitive. So no one uses Wings eh? Unzipped

Wings is great to get your feet wet, but for serious work, you need something more robust, IMHO.

I use ZBrush2. Takes a bit to get your head around the workflow - but it's an incredible sculpting program.

Thanks again folks. I think I'll get my feet wet with Wings and try creating a few morphs. If I find it enjoyable and have an aptitude for it I'll move up to one of the other packages. It looks like if I could find an "educational" type person to swing me Lightwave, that would be within my budget. Unzipped
