Subject: Question about commercial use of something?

Tammy ( ) posted Mon, 22 January 2001 at 6:03 PM · edited Sun, 26 January 2025 at 1:49 AM

I have a question, Im looking for some realisic eyeball props to make into textures for poser and other 3d applications as well that may possibly be used commercially and not just personally, but I dont want to spend a whole lot of money on them. If I purchase the ones at zygote is it legal to use those in something commercial? If not anyone know where I can get some? I love the dosch cd eye textures but wow thats just too much to spend.

As far as I know, everything at Zygote can be used commercially. It seems that it's usually only the free stuff that has commercila restrictions. Usually, but not always. I've seen license agreements that essentially prohibit making pictures to even so much as DISPLAY anywhere, if you can believe that! But i don't think Zygote has any restrictions other than that you can't redistribute the objects, textures, etc., but any derivitive works are yours' to do with as you please. if you're not sure, and you can't find the info at their site, though, I would email them first andd ask specifically about what it is you're interested in. --Mike

Thanks Mike, Ill send them an email and ask. I know I purchase things usually so I can have the right to use it commercially rather than free stuff but this is brokered and I wasnt sure.

Tammy, You have my dragon? Yes? The eyes are extreemely high detail. They are the same eyes for Joy. They are fully Uv mapped although I didn't add a template. UVMapper can make one. Just unparent the eye and save it to your prop's library.

I would be interested to know about Zygote brokered things, too. I've assumed they are under the same user agreement as the other Zygote things, but it would be good to know for sure. I would assume if the creater is being paid for it, then the buyer should be buying the license to use it commercially, but I don't know for sure. Tammy, let us know what you find out. Melanie

heyas; keep in mind the difference between creating images for commercial use, and creating meshes for commercial use. i dont believe the zygote license allows you to insert their eyes into your mesh and sell that as a new 3d figure. (in fact, they probably dont let you give it away free, either. ;) )

Tammy ( ) posted Tue, 23 January 2001 at 1:17 PM

Bloodsong was correct they are free to use in Rendered images in any way you see fit, or I can use them in meshes if I wanted to sell them exclusively through zygote as a brokered item.

Tammy, epain htis part to me. I'm bot understanding you "I can use them in meshes if I wanted "

WarriorDL ( ) posted Tue, 23 January 2001 at 3:00 PM

What that means, along with the rest of that sentence, is that she can use parts of Zygotes meshes (models/objs) in a a new mesh (models/objs) and sell them for profit ONLY through Zygotes Broker program.

Tammy ( ) posted Tue, 23 January 2001 at 3:57 PM

yes sorry I guess I didnt explain that very clearly but I was really confused with the original liscense agreement myself, basically you can use zygotes stuff in any "Rendered" Image but using any of the meshes or textures themselves to create your own character in whole or part is not allowed, unless you sell the item through zygote (I was asking about eyeball textures so that would be a really small part of my creation), didnt mean to confuse anyone and I sort of figured this would be the answer but didnt figure an email could hurt
