Subject: The problem with Content Paradise

Fazzel ( ) posted Sun, 03 April 2005 at 3:38 PM · edited Wed, 04 December 2024 at 8:07 PM

Wasn't that there was a Content Paradise website offering
great deals.
The problem was there is a stupid tab embedded right in the
Poser 5 program.
Like as if people who used Poser were too stupid to figure out
how to use a browser like Netscape or Internet Explorer to
get to the Content Paradise website.
And the worst part was the stupid tab didn't even work.
That was why we were dissing Content Paradise.

dlfurman ( ) posted Sun, 03 April 2005 at 3:41 PM

It did for me.

Doesn't for me. More over I still don't see why it is needed.

Lawndart ( ) posted Sun, 03 April 2005 at 3:53 PM

That's not what would be concidered a "problem". You just didn't like how they did it. Others may have found that tab perfectly acceptable. I didn't care. Big deal, there's an extra tab. :)

Fazzel ( ) posted Sun, 03 April 2005 at 3:57 PM

dlfurman was wanting to know why people were dissing Content Paradise. I gave my reasons. If you like having your interface cluttered up with useless tabs, more power to you.

Yeah, I hate the tab, too. Nothing against CP; I even went there in its first incarnation.

But I don't wanna surf the web from inside Poser. I kept hitting the CP tab accidentally (usually when I was trying to move the Parameter dials palette out of my way). Then IE would fire up, and it would take awhile to kill it.

And speaking of IE...yech. I prefer Netscape or Firefox. Another reason not to use the CP tab.

I really dislike the recent trend toward erasing the line between online and offline, between software and store. If you're using free software, you expect to put up with ads. But if you paid for the damn thing, it ought to be ad-free.

Aureeanna ( ) posted Sun, 03 April 2005 at 6:31 PM

can't you get rid of the CP Tab in P6 the same way you could in Poser 5?

geep ( ) posted Sun, 03 April 2005 at 6:34 PM

Just use some white-out on your 'puter screen ... ... that's what NaySayGuy did ... and it works perfek-lee ! ;=]

randym77 ( ) posted Sun, 03 April 2005 at 6:38 PM

Yes, you can get rid of it. I think the question was why people would want to.

geep ( ) posted Sun, 03 April 2005 at 6:44 PM

Why not just unload Poser ... that solves the problem, also, no? ;=]

Sort of throwing out the baby with the bathwater though.

As to why get rid of it, my question is why have it?

In Paint Shop Pro there is no tab to JASC's website.

In AutoCad there is no tab to Autodesk's website.

And all work just fine for me.

Only Curious Lab thinks we are too stupid to find their
website on our own.

Or perhaps, only CL wants to make it easier to buy things within the program? Always two sides to the story, Fazzel :) Personally - I couldn't care either way. It doesn't take up more memory (until you use it) and if it REALLY bugs me I can remove it. Don't see the point in ranting on about it shrug

PapaBlueMarlin ( ) posted Sun, 03 April 2005 at 9:01 PM

You don't have to use it if you don't want to. The computer I do my poser work on isn't hooked up to the internet right now, but I do check out the site using the browser.

hauksdottir ( ) posted Sun, 03 April 2005 at 11:48 PM

Fazzel, You forget something very important! YOU are not the only person who has Poser. We think that the 300,000 members here don't need to know how to find stuff since they are already here in the midst of plenty? Well, how about all the Poser users who are NOT members of these online communities? Most of my colleagues have Poser in their toolbox, and guess what? They don't hang around the forums and some don't even know about or care about the websites. Then there are all the newbies who have absolutely no idea where to go to find more "stuff". According to some of the surveys, there are more registered P5 users than ALL the former versions put together. There are a lot of new users in that grouping! (How many new names do we see every day? Despite the shyness factor?) Would you deprive all these new users of a quick entry into content just because you don't want a "useless" tab? That seems just a tad self-centered. Maybe you don't do animation, so that palette is useless, too... and how about getting rid of the hair, the cloth, and the material tabs while we are at it? And if YOU are rendering in another program, we can just throw out the lights and cameras, too! Nobody should have to deal with "useless clutter" just because you don't use a feature? Hmm? Carolly

DCArt ( ) posted Mon, 04 April 2005 at 12:08 AM

Carolly has a point. I'm not sure when this forum was started, but I didn't come here until April of 2000 ... and I had every version of Poser that was released before that. I don't even remember how I found it, actually. So for those folks who are new to Poser and aren't aware of the communities, Content Paradise is a springboard to get more content and to learn more about Poser.

Lawndart ( ) posted Mon, 04 April 2005 at 1:35 AM

"Only Curious Lab thinks we are too stupid to find their website on our own". PhotoShop has a tab. They must think you are stupid too. Or maybe they are trying to make it easy for you to get to the website. In PhotoShop click on the feather (in CS) at the top of the tools pallete. Man how stupid to clutter up the workspace with a tab like that. Heck, it doesn't even lead to any free content. rolling eyes

Aeneas ( ) posted Mon, 04 April 2005 at 1:57 AM

Let's say that it would have been better not to make it a tab but add it to the help menu. (Help>buy new content online) But then again other "partners" teamed up for it, and they want now your money. That's why it had to be a tab.

I have tried prudent planning long enough. From now I'll be mad. (Rumi)

randym77 ( ) posted Mon, 04 April 2005 at 6:31 AM

Yes, I agree - there are better ways than a huge tab. An entry on a pulldown menu, I wouldn't mind at all.

What a lot of companies do now is to install shortcuts to your desktop when you install the software. To their company web site, to their partners' web sites. Often with offers: get $50 free when you open an account at INGDirect! Get $10 off if you upgrade using this link! It's still a bit annoying, have your desktop suddenly scattered with this sort of icon, but it's easy to fix: drag and drop them to the Recycle Bin, and they're gone. I suspect most people do click them to check them out, especially if there's a coupon or some such thing attached. They can then bookmark the page for later use, and discard the icon. No muss, no fuss.

hauksdottir ( ) posted Mon, 04 April 2005 at 10:34 PM

Ack! No shortcut icons! No additions to my toolbar or desktop, please! I have enough clutter of my own making there, but it is organized by project or whatever. I don't need some software maker deciding to add a helpful reminder smack dab in the middle of my working space. Leave it within the program. Carolly

Lawndart ( ) posted Mon, 04 April 2005 at 10:40 PM

I agree

randym77 ( ) posted Tue, 05 April 2005 at 6:44 AM

Ick, no. It's easy to clean up your desktop. Most people don't know how to remove the CP tab, and it might not even be possible in future incarnations. And it's darn annoying if you hit it accidentally (which is all too easy). That's not likely to happen with a desktop icon.

geep ( ) posted Tue, 05 April 2005 at 7:33 AM

Um, ........ it's kinda BIG to miss, aint it?

@ Fazzel, (the original poster of this thread)

Try clicking on the "Reset Content Paradise" button
(in the upper left corner of the CP screen)

That made it come alive for me ... and WOW !!!

The stuff that is available there is nothing short of amazing!

Check it out - you'll love it.

I like having CP that easily available.

Exactly! Even if you can't hit the broad side of a barn, you can hit the CP tab. :-P

Not any more, though. It's gone, gone, gone! Muahahahahahaha! I killed it!

Until the next time I have to reinstall, anyway... ;-)
