Subject: Hey CL ---Updaters/free stuff at Content Hell--what a PITA

Dave-So ( ) posted Thu, 07 April 2005 at 6:32 PM · edited Sun, 02 February 2025 at 8:42 PM

Edited to include the offending party Can't you guys make things a bit simpler?
all I want to do is download the content updater for Poser6, not go throught 5 screens just to get the stuff...this is just plain nuts....register, give away your life story....sign in, login...
just give me the updater that is due me for buying your product. I already registered Poser 6...shouldn't have to go through this hell.

FYI you can access CP using a web browser. Probably a better idea than the Poser embedded IE. For one you can continue to work while files download. Nerd3D

Or they could put it on the CL download page... http://www.curiouslabs.com/go/downloads

Dave-So ( ) posted Thu, 07 April 2005 at 6:54 PM

what an innovative idea...put it on their website???? maybe it is...I didn't check because someone said it was at CP.... nope...just a readme ...

This is so unrightly far. I really want that update. But because of my stupid brouser, it wont let me stay login.

I agree about the five screens. Actually seemed like more than five!

Online Now!

I think they don't want people who didn't buy P6 to get a hold of Jessi for free. Still is kinda stupid...

yp6 ( ) posted Thu, 07 April 2005 at 8:34 PM

I think they don't want people who didn't buy P6 to get a hold of Jessi for free. They have a couple of new uploads on the CL website now, but not the figures updater. Couldn't they still require a S/N?

Kenmac ( ) posted Thu, 07 April 2005 at 8:43 PM

I agree with Dave-So. The next update should go on the Curious Labs website. I don't know why they did it this way. I just got Poser 6 the other day when I read about the update and figured it would be there.

CorwinRathe ( ) posted Thu, 07 April 2005 at 10:38 PM

Yep, and it's not accepting my perfectly good Poser key. Rather frusrating to say the least...

It's called marketing - CL are just trying to encourage you to visit Content Paradise in the hope you'll decide to buy something as well. - I haven't bought anything there yet. All four of my "purchases" there have been free - If I was going to buy anything I'd probably get it from R'osity RDNA etc. directly anyway.

yp6 ( ) posted Fri, 08 April 2005 at 5:43 AM

It's called marketing - CL are just trying to encourage you to visit Content Paradise in the hope you'll decide to buy something as well. There's nothing wrong with "encouraging," but this is forcing their marketing on you, and you can't even get around this marketing with spam blockers or pop-up blockers. CL has sunk to a new low with this.

In the UK, We now have 'competition' running rampant in essential services such as utilities and former council housing. Very high price increases are becoming the norm. But just about every letter which informs of such increases concludes by adding that if the user is unhappy, then heshe is of course free to go 'elsewhere'. The foundations were crafted with language alone, but only now is the true agenda of privatisation visible for all to see. Poser 6 is unquestionably great software. It came at an undeniably great price. However, I'm surprised that the flagship figures require so much money to be spent if their potential is to be realised. I'm hoping that this isn't the begining of a disturbing trend, where maybe Poser 7 will come free with exclusive Paradise Club membership (or something like that).

randym77 ( ) posted Fri, 08 April 2005 at 6:19 AM

Offering freebies at CP that you can only get if you register is "encouraging." Offering updates to fix problems that shouldn't have existed in the first place is more like "arm-twisting." This update is due their own mistakes, and a significant inconvenience to many (especially those on dial-up). They should make it as easy as possible on their customers to get the fixes, not use it as another opportunity to force us into their horrible store. What next? Built-in problems, so they can force us to go to CP every week?

Dave-So ( ) posted Fri, 08 April 2005 at 6:21 AM

it wouldn't be "as bad", if you could just download the stuff with maybe entering a serial number, but adding it to your SHOPPING CART and going through all that goes with it is a bit too much.

I have removed all P6 figures and their related content from my runtime - completely. So, don't have them don't need the updater. They might stick it elsewhere :P

"but adding it to your SHOPPING CART and going through all that goes with it is a bit too much." oh? like having Daz Studio in your downloads... which are the end result of the Daz shopping cart? "What next? Built-in problems, so they can force us to go to CP every week?" how about a gag for all the whiners? give it a rest guys! you've all been moaning nonstop since it came out.. whats next? don't like the colour of the track ball? the first time it was a valid complaint. the 2nd time it was. the 41st time is just a pain in the arse.

the first time it was a valid complaint. the 2nd time it was. the 41st time is just a pain in the arse. Unfortunately, the more complaints CL sees the more likely they are to come to their senses on this issue. I'm hoping they'll "see the light" on this like they did with the original P5 registration...

Khai ( ) posted Fri, 08 April 2005 at 7:16 AM

what for? running basic antipiracy?? for having gasp a store of their own? I don't see anyone attacking Daz.. they have a store, updates for Daz Studio are run through the Store.. gasp could it be Double Standards?? Surely not!

yp6 ( ) posted Fri, 08 April 2005 at 7:31 AM

The DAZ store is one store, and DAZ studio is a freebee at this point. No comparison. I have downloaded updates for DAZ products before and it's a piece of cake. If I'd purchased P6 through Content Paradox, I wouldn't complain, but I purchased through the CL store and I expect updates through the CL store or from CL's website from the "downloads" page. Nowhere were we told we'd have to sign up for CP if we wanted updates for the inevitible bugs that were going to be in the software. For that matter, if they were forcing us to sign up for 'rosity, RDNA, or any other such place to get product updates I'd be shouting just as loud.

randym77 ( ) posted Fri, 08 April 2005 at 7:39 AM

Exactly. Like it or not, that's the way it works. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. And I'm going to keep on squeaking.

And if you think I don't complain about DAZ (when I feel they deserve it), you haven't read many of my posts. Especially at DAZ! >:-)

caulbox ( ) posted Fri, 08 April 2005 at 7:41 AM

Agreed. DAZ is but a single company. The businesses that 'compete' to supply me with essential sevices are many. Maybe they employ the same secretary?

Khai ( ) posted Fri, 08 April 2005 at 7:50 AM

"For that matter, if they were forcing us to sign up for 'rosity, RDNA, or any other such place to get product updates I'd be shouting just as loud." well lets see. to get Daz studio,... you sign up to the STORE. when you update windows... your serial is checked (SR1 - SR2) and if it's Bad it's rejected... shall we carry on with each and every software package that checks serials for updates? hmmm? see a pattern? this is life. deal with it. there again, as randy said "And I'm going to keep on squeaking." says it all really when you replace "squeaking" for "whining".

Farside ( ) posted Fri, 08 April 2005 at 7:59 AM

actually, if I was an employee of CL there's no chance in hell I'd still even come to these bitch boards and my respect for most of the pathetic whiners would be just about zero.

Puntomaus ( ) posted Fri, 08 April 2005 at 8:07 AM

Another thing that bugs me: that there is an update available has only been posted over her at Rosity. CL did not send out a newsletter informing everyone about this update. What about all those people who bought P6 but never read this forum or any other forum? They might find out about an update where and when? And when there is a program update or bug fix then we will only know about this because we happen to look at this forum just at the right time and found a posting about it?

And it's not about checking the P6 serial number - my P6 is registered as well as my P5 and Shade - it is the fact that you have to sign up and register once again and that is what I don't want. I won't shop at CP because I prefer to shop at RDNAs own store or over here in the MP. If anyone and his uncle is comfortable with this weird solution about providing bug fixes then ok, I is not and will not.

simple answer to that then Puntomaus...

you don't get the updates.

thats Your problem not CL's.
tis funny. I don't get an email for each new build of Daz Studio.. or Nero.. or Acdsee.. or Winzip.. or Quicktime.. or AdWare.. I have to go and check with the website...

randym77 ( ) posted Fri, 08 April 2005 at 8:16 AM

I don't mind the serial check. But they can do that at the CL site.

As for D|S - it's free program. If you're giving away free stuff, asking for a registration is perfectly acceptable. As I said, I have no problems with CP asking people to register to get their freebies.

I'm pretty happy with the way DAZ handles updates, actually. You get an e-mail, with a direct link to the download page of your account. You may have to log in, but then it's one click, and you're done. No searching all over the site for the update, while being bombarded by ads. None of the shopping cart silliness. No suggestions for buying P6 to go with my P6 update. (Though that did have some humor value, I must admit.)

Let CL handle the program development and DAZ handle content and customer support, we'd be in 3D heaven. ;)

Lzy724 ( ) posted Fri, 08 April 2005 at 9:09 AM

So where exactly do you go to get the free content like P5 had? Im confused. Im so tired of having to register here and register there and the program doesnt even work like it should. Sad, very sad.

"simple answer to that then Puntomaus...

Wrong!

It's CLs responsibility to make sure that everyone who paid for the program is aware that updates and bug fixes are available. They had time to send newsletters out to get us pre order P6 and to send newsletters with other promos but it's not possbile for them to send a newsletter to every customer who bought the program in order to tell them there is an update available? LOL I am very sure that I will get a newsletter when some new stuff is available in their store :P

Actually, doesn't Poser 6 have an option (under "General Preferences" that will check for updates? I haven't tried it so, I'm not sure how well this feature works. :) However, I do agree that companies should send a message to their customers when updates become available. And I also think the updates should be available off the "Download" page on the company's website. I don't mind entering my serial number to prove I purchased P6, but I don't think I should have to add it to my cart, proceed to checkout, checkout, then download it. You get an e-mail, with a direct link to the download page of your account. You may have to log in, but then it's one click, and you're done. No offense to DAZ or CL or anyone else, but I never click links in e-mails anymore. There are too many "phishing" e-mails that claim to be from legitimate sources. Sure, the current phishing e-mails only ask for bank information, but it doesn't take much to whip up a spam message asking for serial numbers. Then, when you think you're clicking a link to go to DAZ, you're actually going to some overseas site that harvests serial numbers. The next thing you know, you can't get the latest service pack because 10 other people have tried to use your serial number. --John

I do. I have my mail programs set to display the real URL, and I always check it before clicking. (And I use a font that makes spoofs like www.paypa1.com obvious.) I also have my mail set to plain text, so for me, it's usually more like "copy and paste URL into browser" rather than actual clicking.

Dave-So ( ) posted Fri, 08 April 2005 at 5:01 PM

for those complaining about the whiners...if it wasn't for the whiners you can bet your sweet bippy that you would still be using Poser 5 as the original release, or at the very least with many more problems than were fixed. The whining got rid of that security fiasco and made P5 useable. and the whining will surely bring about changes withn P6... but maybe the problem is the term "whining" Call us concerned and willing to speak up, unlike you robots that will accept anything, probably smile as you eat your rotten steak that needs a power saw to cut it. And I also send emails to tech support, sales, and anyone else I figure would give a listen. Getting an updarte from DAZ is much different than this deal with CL through content paradise ... and I do get a newsletter that says a new update is available, in fact, I get them from a lot of companies..but did not get one from CL

LOL, you have to admire the shameless opportunism of exploiting the on-topic disgruntlement of this thread for a crafty, off-topic leftoid rant. Why, it's almost capitalistic.

I guess it's a solution not many of us have considered for our various gripes about the way things happen in our 'scene', but maybe the whole 3D figure market needs nationalising. The means of production and distribution under one wing; a vast, state owned monopoly run by people whose only motivation is that they really, really care about us.

Valiant horse, sheep and chicken figures will probably be permitted for use in acceptable farm-promotion images, but I'm not so sure about fat pigs and snarling dogs. Might be considered subversive to the point of being counter-revolutionary. ;-)

Yeah that pissed me off too, I saw it as a devisive act in order to get a mass membership sign up to content paradise. Don't get me wrong I like curious labs alot love poser and shade7 and I think they are fair minded for the most part and did not have to offer shade 7 free with poser6. But I must admit I don;t like content paradise intergrated into poser because it slows the program down alot. I also do not like feeling I have to sign up as a member to get the content updater for poser 6, I think it should have been optional, if it had been I would have signed up and felt better about it. I kinda feel like I was used. So now im feeling really cheap now and feel like I need to take a long shower and scrub off my skin.

I noticed a big speed-up in Poser 5 when I removed Content Paradise. Is it the same with Poser 6? I deleted CP from P6 first off, so I wasn't in a position to notice any changes in speed.
