Hi everyone, back in late January of this year ICM started a post about the bad turn of weather which was coming upon us here in the east coast of the United States and as the thread proceeded many here found out, to our surprise, just how close we were to each other. The post eventually came around to the possibility of some of us getting together (see attached link for the post).

Well, Ang25 and myself are still gamed on meeting fellow Brycers and have been tossing about the idea of having the meet next month. We would like to get all those still interested to come join us. You dont have to be from New York or the adjoining areas to come, everyone is welcome. But we would need to hammer out a meeting place and discuss what to do and where. At this point its just an idea nothing has been carved in stone. The only restriction so far is that Mothers Day is out. So, lets hear from you guys and gals.

Hey! I'm gonna be there, does that scare anybody? ;P

Love to come. Haven't been to NYC since '91. Its only a 7 hour bus ride from where I'm from. Sadly, US customs force us Kanuks to have passports now. I don't think I could renew my passport within a month. But I'll try. I'd also have to OK-it with the wife.

Anyone heard from Boomer in recent times? Maybe someone could IM him and let him know about this thread? @Sackrat-you're scaring me, business on a weekend in NYC? Hmmmm wonder what that could be, lol.

madmax_br5 ( ) posted Tue, 12 April 2005 at 2:23 PM

I live in the city until may 16th, so I'd be game anytime before that. We might be able to use my apartment (Soho area) but I have to check with my roommates.

sackrat ( ) posted Tue, 12 April 2005 at 2:45 PM

@Ang25,.........not that kind of business,......just delivering some documents and hard copy stuff, and getting a signed reciept.

I'm open for whenever. Again, I just need a week or so to get the time off from work. @ Sackrat: My wife and I are still willing to haul you along with us if your still game!

SOB-SOB!!!!! I'm 3000 miles away and it'd take about 2-3 months to get a passport and US visa! (Plus about $1000 I don't have for the plane-ticket.) If yous get together here's wishing you a really great time!!!! PS: Ang isn't THAT scary!!!! ;-)

Quest ( ) posted Wed, 13 April 2005 at 4:28 AM

Well folks, nice to get all these replies but we really need to start setting some things more concretely to make it a reality. So the first order of business would be the date and time. Were aware that Mothers Day falls on Sunday May 8th so that day has been set aside for moms everywhere so we can cross that day out. We also have a 3-day weekend coming at the end of May, Memorial Day weekend often considered the unofficial start of summer and many people can take time off work without being penalized. But Madmax has stated that he will be in NYC until the Monday the 16th and he could make it anytime before then. Obviously weekends are best for most people but some others still work on those days. And the next thing that we should start considering is, what will we do once together. Do we want to walk through Central Park and chat? Go to a museum, take in lunch, go for dinner and drinks or all of the above? So, some suggestions please!

Ang25 ( ) posted Wed, 13 April 2005 at 6:39 AM

I have to double check when my nephew graduates. But as far as what to do, I'd like to see Central Park and if a museum is possible that sounds great. I'm more into the meeting and chatting than a whole bunch of site seeing. So places that we can hang out and socialize are more what I'm looking for. So no "LIBRARIES" sssshhh. (I work in a library) ;P Its looking like the 14th, 15th might be good, but like I said I have a graduation to check on, guess I'd better try to find that out tonight. :) Ang

Ang25 ( ) posted Wed, 13 April 2005 at 6:41 AM

Oh and if some of the Canadian friends can't make it that early but can make it in the summer, I'm willing to do this thing twice, :-D

RodsArt ( ) posted Wed, 13 April 2005 at 7:03 AM

I stay as far away for New York City as is humanly possible. I have a fear of large groups of people that keeps me out of cities. I hope the get together is a good one and that lots of pictures and related stories are posted here.

sackrat ( ) posted Wed, 13 April 2005 at 12:18 PM

I good for any timeframe that is acceptable to all the others. Central Park sounds good as well as some food(I'm a growing boy who needs constant nourishment),.....but whatever is good for all others will be fine. I'm with Quest though,.......lets get it concretely organized.

86th between bway and west end is the Parlor. An irish style pub with good food, affordable drinks, and a kind waitstaff. May I suggest riverside park, as it is so much less crowded that central and since none of use know what each other looks like... -Mitch

Would have been interesting (I'm in Montreal so it not out of the question) Unfortunately I have some friends coming back from China (haven't seen them in over two years) and a business trip to Phoenix in that time frame. Got my Kanuckastanian passport so I am good to go otherwise.

@bandolin, if you have a passport centre you can get expedited processing of 7-10 days for $30cdn or next day for a bit more. I had to do that for this biz trip before it got postponned to the timeframe we are looking at.
update - if you're still in Montreal there are several places, do a web search for passport office and canada and you shpild be able to find one here.

Ang25 ( ) posted Wed, 13 April 2005 at 6:53 PM

Hey this summer I wouldn't mind taking a trip north, so if a bunch of us want to meet up in Canada, that would be fun too. I can drive to Toronto in 5 hrs. :-D And I still have my Passport (I think). May 14th / 15th should work for me for going to NYC. Found out my Nephew graduates the next weekend. :)

Quest ( ) posted Thu, 14 April 2005 at 5:33 PM · edited Thu, 14 April 2005 at 5:37 PM

So, it sounds like the weekend of the 14 is the best time for most of us. Shall we make that official?

Well, I agree that socializing and chatting would be the primary goal here and we can walk and talk at the same timewellmost of us canI can even chew gum but often bite my tongue somewhere in the process.

Walking through the park and the museum might also inspire some of us to Brycalate. I would think that walking through Central park would depend on the weather. For those that dont know, the Museum of Natural History is on West 79th Street and the Hayden Planetarium is on West 81st Street, these two are adjoined and can be traversed from within each building but both carry separate admission charges and these are right across the street facing the west side of Central park (Central Park is 2 miles long and mile wide). So theres no reason we couldnt hike a little through Central park, given its a clear day and visit the Museum of Natural History and the Planetarium if we so choose.

The Museum of modern Art (MOMA) is on West 53rd Street about 1 1/2 miles south of the MNH and the Planetarium. This is about the only art museum on the west side, most of the others would be directly across town on the east side of the park. Guggenheim Museum (that strange conch-like concrete building often depicted in architectural magazines) is on 5th Ave. and East 88th Street. The Frick Collection (mostly old masters) is on 5th Ave. and 70th Street. Metropolitan Museum of Art is also on 5th Ave. off 82nd Street. A few museums could be found in Midtown and downtown Manhattan as well.

The area surrounding the Museum of Natural History (actually the back of it since the front faces Central Park) has many quaint little caf, restaurants and eateries. Whereas on the East side you may have to walk a little to find as many eateries, youll find many delicatessens and fast food joints.

This is a general run-down of whats immediately available. Of course were still opened to suggestions as to what to do on this meet, so feel free to chime in and share your ideas.

It would also be a good idea to hammer out a central meeting location where everyone would meet. Therefore, I would like to get an idea of how many think they may be coming by train into Penn Station (34th Street) or bus to the Port Authority Terminal (42nd Street)? How many are driving? Will there be anyone under the age of 18? How many are planing to stay more than one day?

Keep the ideas coming!

Ang25 ( ) posted Thu, 14 April 2005 at 8:55 PM

I'm thinking of taking the bus in, and can stay overnight since I don't work on Sundays (thank goodness). How long I stay will depend on what everyone else has planned. And I'm over 18, at least my body thinks so. Ok so if the train goes to Penn Station and the bus goes to Port Authority, who goes to Grand Central? :)

Quest ( ) posted Thu, 14 April 2005 at 11:02 PM

LOL...Some other trains! yes, we need to get a low-down as to where everybody will be getting in. Yes, Grand Central (42nd Street and Lexington Ave.)not too far from the Port Authority.

sackrat ( ) posted Fri, 15 April 2005 at 12:48 AM

Let me get in contact with Miden1138 and see what he's doing(he lives right here in Winchester), maybe I can ride along with him. I'll let you know. With all this walking, I suppose I should wear some sensible shoes, eh.
