interesting idea..I tend to shy away from anything to do with Yahoo (mebbe I'm a Mozilla snob, but I've had to take Yahoo off so many machines, it's almost as bad as Cool Web Search..;). Do wish you all the best of luck with it..last time I even tried to log onto a group like that, it set me up with a mail account before I could even hit 'cancel'..;)
I wish I'd said that.. The Staircase Wit

I don't know about having to get an email account before joining a group. I already have a mail account there that I use for website registrations only. As for putting stuff on your machine or comparing it to the damnable Cool Web Search, never seen it happen. Yahoo's just another web portal as far as I've ever experienced. I've never installed any of their extra little goodies though.

I've been part of Yahoo groups for years and I never had to get an e-mail address there, never had and never will. I don't get anything else from the group but the groups e-mail. But I know there are some trickey pages you have to go to there to unsubscribe to something. Fortunally the group owner in my groups are aware of that and advice the group members.
I've never had any problem with Yahoogroups, either. It's just another web site to me. But I don't use their chat or IM functions; maybe those are the problematic items?
Google also offers free mailing lists, if that would be better. Alternately, I have a personal web site with a PHP message board that is not being used at the moment. We could use that.
It has been a couple of years since I was on Yahoogroups but I never had any problem. I do believe that Yahoo has a chat like AOL's Instant Messenger or MSN. Those would be something you have to install on your machine and different from what Mugsey is using for the group. Also is different than the Java Chat provided for each group. Got to run to work so Mugsey when you are ready, lets recreate a mystery! :-) PS let me know if you change but set up on Yahoo is fine with me.
