I think he's saying David Tennant has been chosen to replace Christopher when he leaves at the end of this season.

Well all I know is it's been in the news for the past two weeks at least that Christopher doesn't want to be type cast and has already quit the show so they'll be needing a new Doctor for next season. So as I said, I'm assuming Slinger has some source somewhere stating Tennant has been chosen to replace him, but you're correct. None of those links say anything about that.

"The new Doctor Who has been officially named as David Tennant, the star of BBC period drama Casanova. Tennant, 33, will become the 10th Time Lord when filming starts on the new series in Cardiff this summer. He is taking over from Christopher Eccleston, who announced he was quitting last month after only one series as the Doctor. Tennant, who will star alongside Billie Piper, said he was "delighted, excited and honoured". Other actors who had been linked with the time-travelling role included Bill Nighy, Eddie Izzard, Richard E Grant, David Thewlis and Alan Davies. "

Thanks for the link!! I'm quite enjoying the new series and think Christopher Eccleston is a great Doctor, shame to see him go. Well here's hoping DAvid Tennant will be good too.

From the little I've seen of David, he seems to be a good choice as well. As Much as I like Izzy Izzard, I just can't see him as anything other than his own crazy self! Certainly not the brilliant Doctor.

Christopher Eccleston revived my interest in Dr Who; I loved the show as a kid, from the very start, and became increasingly pissed off with it as I grew up and the show got shabbier and cheesier. IMO, the last good Dr was Tom Baker - and most of his shows were pretty bad, too. He made up for it by being a decent actor with a strong screen presence. Christopher Eccleston is, IMO, the best one so far, and damn lucky to be caught on a roll of interest in the show. Pretty good scripts, decent effects and - at long last - a crew who give a damn about the franchise. I just hope the new guy can carry it off well. It's been a long time since I could watch the show without cringing.

Some of the talk today suggests that they want to do a proper regeneration scene. The initial handling of the announcement that Christopher Ecclestone wouldn't be doing another season was mishandled by the BBC, and they had to grovel a bit. By British TV standards, the 13-episode run this year is unusually long. The BBC, incidentally, seems to be doing some smart programme planning around Doctor Who. They have a follow-up documentary on the BBC3 channel, followed in turn by Farscape, while there has been more-or-less related material on BBC4. Last week, the story involved Charles Dickens, so BBC4 did a program on him. And, in my schooldays, I just didn't realise how theatrical in intent Dickens' characters were.

I said in a previous thread that I thought Eccleston was the weakest link in the new show. It doesn't surprise me one bit that he's gone. The stuff about him fearing being typecast was a lie made up by the BBC (and it wasn't even the news division).

I suspect that it'll eventually come to light that it was a mutual feeling by both the actor and the producers that he just wasn't working out as The Doctor. This is purely gut feeling speculation on my part, of course; but at least I'm not spinning it as fact like the BBC.

I've discussed some of this at length with my brother -- we seemed to spend most of our childhood hiding behind the sofa on Saturday evenings -- and we're agreed that the current format, US-TV-compatible, is a trifle awkward. It's good that it doesn't need end-of-episode cliffhangers, but the pacing of the episodes has sometimes felt a bit poor. Tonight will be interesting; the first of a two-part story. With more time, we shall see how they do.

KarenJ ( ) posted Sat, 16 April 2005 at 7:40 AM

I missed all of the Casanova series, so I can't say I'm optimistic or pessimistic about Tennant taking over. The list of other possibles: Alan Davies would be good. Richard Grant would be very good. But Eddie Izzard? Well, much as I love him, I think that he would be a little too camp. The Doctor in rouge and lipstick? I'd be expecting him to launch into the "Cake or Death?" routine every minute...

I should explain, there was no article on the BBC website when I posted the news (in the early hours of the morning over here in the UK), it was announced as "breaking news" on BBC radio so I just posted some links to David Tennant info so you guys could see what you were getting ;)

Any actor generally fears being "typecast" in any role because it limits their ability to get other work. However, the notion being repeated in this thread is that Eccleston left the role of Doctor Who specifically because he feared being typecast as the character. This is a quote falsely attributed to him by the BBC. They just made it up, and they have subsequently apologised and specifically withdrawn it as a reason for his leaving:

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/article/ds20420.html

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/4410943.stm

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2005/04/05/nwho05.xml&sSheet=/portal/2005/04/05/ixportal.html

But the great thing about spin is that it works...

Although I didn't see it, there was apparently a pre-production interview with Eccleston published on the BBC website in which he stated he intended playing the character for two or three seasons. This was allegedly removed from the site during the filming of the current series (the fan sites were hot with this). It's stuff like that (plus his obvious, to me, unsuitability for the role) that makes me think a mutual decision was made between the actor and the producers to cut their losses.

It'll all come out eventually.
