Attached Link: http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/understanding-series/understanding-histograms.shtml

I wanted to share this link cos it's the clearer and easier explanation about histogram that I read so far! Thought it might be helpful for some! :)

I like your dream and I love this link! Thanks Pascale I really had no understanding of that little graph until now. I think it is going to come in very handy for future shots:}

Yes indeed!! I used it a few mns ago to shoot outside of the house and it's kinda sunny out there so kind of a pain to get the right exposure without having the highlights washed out! And with the grey card and the histogram, I got a cool shot! Totally balanced! :D It works! It's magic! I'm loving it! :) PS: wanted to show the histogram with the pic but I have no idea how to save it! Any tips? No PS on the pic whatsoever, only resizing, of course.

The luminous-landscape web pages are brilliant. If your serous about photography then get his DVDs I mean all of them. Oh and a bank loan for the DSLR and mega expensive lenses that you will hunger for. I can not recommend the site enough

Eggiwegs! I would like... to smash them!

LOL! The bank loan is definitely not a good idea but I am indeed VERY hungry for all that fancy equipement! Will have to wait though! :( And the foot belongs to Laurent, my sweet man! :)

thanks for sharing, Pascale! i love really simple explanations, but for me, i kinda got a little lost in that one though. soooooo many words! here's my understanding of a histograms in Sheila First Grade Photography Terms! LOL! if the graph spikes up high on the left that means the image is gonna be too dark. if the graph spikes up high on the right, that means the image is gonna be too bright. If i have an unbalanced histogram, that means i need to readjust my exposure accordingly. Anyway, that's where i'm at on my understanding of histograms. can you tell me what else that article was trying to say? What else is important for me to know about histograms. What have i missed? i can't focus and concentrate well today. i'm too hyper and bouncing off the walls. i think i will go outside and run! Pascale, why don't you take some classes? sounds like you would LOVE to!!! i would love to take a photography class too!!!!! Anyway, go for it girl!!!!!!!!!!!!! cool pic BTW!

tibet2004uk ( ) posted Sat, 16 April 2005 at 1:57 PM

Yep! That's roughly about it Sheila!! ;) As for taking classes, I dunno, for now I'm learning on the net and it's god damn cool! Classes would mean to leave Sam on his own which I'm not very keen on doing but I'm thinking about it! There might be a solution! I'm not doing my head in with it though cos I know that if I'm supposed to take classes I will, in due time! ;) No rush! :)

I really would like to see this histogram too;-) Usually there is a command in editing softwares for screen capture..but there also freewares wich allows to do it as faststone here http://www.zdnet.com.au/downloads/0,39024478,39098049s,00.htm I would like to point that what tvernucio mentionned about the peaks in the extremes is often right (with normal range of tones ans contrast) ...but not with all conditions.. and does not mean the image to be wrongly exposed in a very dark or contrasted scene..as a sunset or anything else..as the histogram will show the major portion of the ton sale in the left ,a bit in the right...and an almost flat line in the middle..having almost no middle tones...;-)

There will probably still be situations where areas of the image are either burnt out or very dark, the burning or dodging tools in your editing program can assist with localised lightening and darkening. Pascale, hope you do not mind me using the image you posted posted, I spent 5 minutes burning a little tone to the sky and taking the edge off the reflections on the car roof/rear window. not major improvements but it does help by not drawing the eye up out of the image.

tvernuccio ( ) posted Sun, 17 April 2005 at 4:15 AM

Pascale, hey, if you can learn here and on the internet for free then go for it! as long as you're learning! Mirielle, ah ha...so there are some exceptions!!!! good to know. didn't think about that. Art, you're back! hey...that's great! i love what you did to this photo!
