Subject: Moved/Hidden threads....

Jumpstartme2 ( ) posted Sun, 24 April 2005 at 1:57 PM ยท edited Sun, 18 August 2024 at 2:14 AM

Just wondering why this thread "Re: So tonight I spied on Area 51" was moved to a hidden forum?

It actually contained information pertaining to free software to use with Vue, for terrains and such..so why wasn't it moved to the Vue Forum instead of being hidden??!

I have been looking for that thread for several days now as I got an ebot telling me there are more replies to it..only now I had to do a search for it, and discovered I dont have access to the forum it was moved to >:( What was in it that was deemed inappropriate for RR? Edited for typo's

I know about the OT posts, Im just wondering why this thread, {and probably some others} have been hidden instead of moved to more appropriate forums..is it 'that much' more difficult to move this one to the Vue forum for instance, than it is to move it to a hidden one, that isnt accessable to the members?

I ask this last part, because of a statement made by StaceyG:

"Hopefully since we have posted this reminder about what is in the header of this forum and what its designed for we won't have to worry about moving threads or where they go:)"

Why are posts such as this, which have no TOS violations {afaik..cant see it anymore} being hidden, why not just delete the blasted things?
{more typos :(}

Renderosity is becoming less of a "community" each day. God forbid people having a good time here, or to post revelant information which may include tongue-in-cheek humor. It's like a bad boy's home run by nuns.

"It's like a bad boy's home run by nuns." I like that, too funny! Also unfortunatly too true as well.

Damn, this thread had some useful links and I have not bookmarked them!!!!

One was Google...just click on "satellite" to see real life detail (a few years old) of a map address. The only other one I remember being discussed (I don't recall a link) was the U.S. Government used to provide topographical satellite maps.

Jumpstartme2 ( ) posted Sun, 24 April 2005 at 8:28 PM

Well, I had posted one to WorldWind from Nasa...but Im sure this one will get snatched away as well...so Im off to the Vue forum in hopes that its not 'too' off topic there >:(

And again I ask the following.

Something does not add up here.

First OT posts were banned, the reason: not enough resources/ site using too many resources for them.

Yet now, rather than just delete an OT post or worse yet ignore them and allow it to sit here in the forums, thus expending the least amount of resources, we are going too expend some more resources, and move them, and save them in a private admin only place rather than delete them.

Any admins care to explain that one to us all?

I await the reply from some adim breathlessly.

When we move a post to our aka MountDoom it will say post moved to another forum. We do this so if we have to recheck something we still have a record of this. If we would delete it completely then we would not have this option. I hope this answers your question BDC. SndCastie Community Admin

I'd bookmarked the WorldWind site, but not the two mentioned in the post above it. However, the topic of terrains and maps and satellite images will come up again... or I can go delving through sites if I need a particular environment... and will probably stumble over other interesting bits. It is nice to be able to share them, though, so I hope that there will be a restructuring for things which are not really off-topic to artists. Carolly

dialyn ( ) posted Mon, 25 April 2005 at 6:58 AM

There are more than one type of OT and they are all getting lumped together under the same rule. I agree with Carolly...it would be nice to have a place to post those random links that may be useful to more than one forum but may not reveal their usefulness on first sight. The maps, which started out as OT, evolved into a discussion about their application in Vue (and perhaps other programs). Not everyone in that thread realized the maps could be used that way. Vue came up late in the thread, and without the thread, we may not have been provided that information. That, to me, is a creative and appropriate OT. But because of various things, we're losing that ability to share what is trivia to some, information to others.

I'd like to hear the answer for this one, actually. Seems a curious decision to just delete it (or send to /dev/null or whatever you do with them) if it actually contained site-appropriate information. bonni

Hi, My apologies as I didn't see the Vue references in that thread but I have now moved it back in to the Community to the Vue forum.. Again my apologies. Stacey Communtiy Manager

Thank you Stacey :) And my apologies to you and SndCastie for being so waspish..I get that way sometimes ~lol~ Also, I agree with Carolly and Dialyn..what can be done with those 'seemingly' OT posts, that evolve into something appropriate for 'Rosity as a whole? Its a shame we are not allowed to share knowledge/discoveries :(

We are brainstorming ideas and see what we can come up with. I do agree that it would be nice to be able to share knowledge/discoveries as you guys pointed out. Thanks! Stacey

Good! :) Maybe our conversations wander like those attractive loops in chaos theory... approaching relevance every now and then... since this site is a storehouse of shared knowledge, we need to be able to capture those bits. Carolly

dialyn ( ) posted Mon, 25 April 2005 at 8:53 PM

Maybe we need a Mius Forum for those threads. :)

BDC ( ) posted Mon, 25 April 2005 at 9:54 PM

Sndcstie actually no it does not answer my question, wich again is, why would you need to go and "recheck" it, if the post was so off topic to begin with? It really makes no sense to me at all. As for threads with "info" in em, why not just have an interesting links forum? People can post their links all they want, and others can go check it out to see if anything strikes their fancy. Of course though, that would have to be moderated too ensure only links and such are posted there. I nominate some of the poser forum mods for that. LOL Just a suggestion.

SndCastie ( ) posted Tue, 26 April 2005 at 3:33 AM

Case in point BDC if we had infact deleted the post instead of moving it to our trash bin we wouldn't have been able to move it to the Vue forum. We are only human not perfect and sometimes we miss things in a post that is brought to our attention as was done in this isnstance. SndCastie

OOOooooo, a link forum...sounds good to me :D

Would have to include rules {of course} no links to adult sites/child nudity/warez. etc. etc....but I really like that idea :)

The 3D links forum is rarely used...perhaps it could be renamed and used for this purpose.

How many years have I been here, and have not seen that forum??! ~slaps forehead~ Thats a good idea Dialyn..what'cha think Sndcastie and StaceyG? {and SndCastie, don't worry 'bout it, I do that all the time..hence the reason you will see most of my posts 'edited' ;)}
