This will probably sound familiar to a lot of people. When I don't have the time to doodle, I also keep a notebook nearby to write down ideas that came up while working on a picture :)
I've been told many times that even a digital artist needs a sketch. I've doodled ina sketch book for years (I carry it with me always) and turn to it when I need inspiration. I agree with "go outside." I often look at a view and say to myself, "Gee that would be a great image if only [blank] weren't in tha way!" And then I go home and do it without [blank] Nowadays, I also carry my digital camera around, which has made my sketch book a little dated. By the way, The inspiration for my image "Homestead" in the renderosity gallery came while I was watching a cooking show on TV.
For me getting ideas is not a problem, just turning the ideas into something that looks good is different story. My current scene lead me down a path of issues with ecosystem - including a reported issue to e-on. But I learn alot though the journey, so I believe it was worth it. I still got some more work on scene, I tend to have a problem with detail - more like lack of it. On the subject, I personally use artist sketch books and photographic books to get impiration for my scenes.

Seems like when I finally finish an image I'm eager to start on a new one. The problem is I just can't seem to come up with any ideas. I just stare at a blank screen and think. Walk away, make some coffee, come back. Same stupid blank screen staring back at me. Then I start randomly doodling and suddenly I'm swamped with ideas so I quickly save rough sketches with names like "doodleX", "doodleX1", "doodleX2" etc...lol. So now I've got like at least 2 dozen of these "ideas" saved but I can't pick one! I just keep doing variations of each or just starting a new skecth so that I don't lose a cool new concept. Aaaaaaaarrrrrggggh! Time for bed I guess. Sorry for this mini rant. Lol. :)
