I don't know if you folks have seen this... "A free database of motion capture (over 1000 motions) and resources for using motion capture data put up by Carnegie Mellon University." Based on the preview animations the files are very clean. http://mocap.cs.cmu.edu/search.php?subjectnumber=%&motion=% The mocap file options seem to be .tvd, .c3d & .amc. I don't know if Poser will read them but maybe there is a converter to BVH. I believe Motion Builder can convert c3d to bvh.

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Mon, 25 April 2005 at 8:56 PM

Poser won't read them, as-is. They must be converted. Credo's Life Forms Studio can handle some of these.

And here you can find a free program called MOTView that can convert between the different formats.

Wow thanks! Well that would do it - MOTView 0.8 will read amc and write bvh! http://www.cs.wisc.edu/graphics/Courses/cs-838-2000/Students/gardner/motView/index.html Good catch Helgard!

Did anybody get the motview converter to work with the amc files?

TwoDigital ( ) posted Tue, 26 April 2005 at 11:57 AM

When trying to use MOTView on the files from post #1 above, it's looking for .ASF files... they download as .AMC files (so being silly, I decided to rename one.) At that point, it asks for the corresponding .AMC file... :) What am I doing wrong?

yp6 ( ) posted Tue, 26 April 2005 at 12:04 PM

At the top of each group is an ASF file. You'll need that and the AMC.

operaguy ( ) posted Tue, 26 April 2005 at 12:53 PM

Tried to use MOTView last night, does not actually function with .AMC apparently. But supposedly it will load and .amc so you can export it to BVH, but I was not successful: App crashed and exited constantly. AMD 3500 with 4GIG RAM and Win XP Pro ::::: Opera :::::

While these files sure seem interesting please be aware that it is very unlikely that these will be joint mapped for poser figures certainly not the post zygote millenium class figures of even P5/P6 figures. I have alot of experience working with human motion files using both Lifeforms 3.9 and poser versions 3,4 propack,,5 and,6. I own credo's entire motion library( 600+ files) and even those need major adjustments in the graph editor to prevent the "herky jerkies" and those are sold as being "poser compatible." i have found that generic mocap files like these and the famous "santa monica zip" archive, often require so much time and poser graph editor experience that you could have key framed the motion yourself.in less time. and many of them contain thousands of keyframes that will need to thinned and edited in poser However i often use portions of such files and blend them with other motion files along with hand keying in credo's Lifeforms 3.9 Good luck :-)

Judging from the video previews, some of the Carnegie Mellon mocaps appear to be in alphauser51's Hot Moves motion pack here in the Marketplace.

operaguy ( ) posted Tue, 26 April 2005 at 6:13 PM

little dragon...do you have the "Hot Moves"? I wrote them an email, no response... Looking for Latin dance move called "The Washing Machine" and wondering if it is in Hot Moves 1 or 2

operaguy:

I'm more interested in his upcoming V3 dance motions, actually.

Not familiar with "The Washing Machine", but I could use a good mocap of the Macarena, myself.

He has video previews of some of the motion files on his website, and I can recognize the lambada mocap from CMU. I haven't scrutinized the salsa motions yet, but I find it interesting that he has thirty of them.

operaguy ( ) posted Tue, 26 April 2005 at 7:51 PM

I know several people who can do 'the washing machine'; it was in the movie "Salena", Salena's mom teaches it to her. Tha dancer rotates the hips in a certain way that makes her stop and go and subtly gyrate while turning in a circle. I saw on his site yesterday that Hot Moves 1/2 work with Judy and the P6 characters, so that interests me. ::::: Opera :::::

Ive just downloaded the first .amc file from CMU Graphics Lab. & the .asf file. Which is the one above the list. I right clicked & saved as. Loaded the .amc file then the .asf into Motview. All ok. saved the file as BVH & then went to Poser. Used P6 loaded the BVH file. Whcih took some time but then again there are 2751. Well the figure changed pose but there was no animation what so ever. So Im still experimenting.

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Wed, 27 April 2005 at 4:29 AM

Kingfisher, if you want to save some time while experimenting, you can open the BVH file in a text editor and lower the Frames value, which appears just after the hierarchy section. Then Poser will import only those frames, ignoring the remainder. I find this useful when testing large mocap files for compatibility. Life Forms Studio 3.5 does an adequate job of converting the .amc files. It was distributed on a DIGIT Magazine cover disc two years ago, if you can find a back issue.

Thanks Little Dragon. Most helpful.

pigfish9 ( ) posted Fri, 29 April 2005 at 11:27 AM

The body part names in these files do not match the Poser body part names. I know they can be edited in a text editor but where can I find the "real" names for body parts the Poser will be able to read? I know Poser is an extremely picky critter when it comes to capitalization and punctuation. Thank you!
