Hi, I've been playing around with fire today, first I posted a new image in my gallery:^^^

Then I played some more and came up with this: (see pic above)

Got some water probs with the "Sacrificial Fire" and of course there's not much else in the image - any ideas?

And what about this image? I mean the "Desert Campfire" included with this message? What can I do to improve this?

Hmm, how about some poser people, a horse maybe? A backpack by the fire? Maybe some more trees closer to the front...the flame looks great!!

Make the scene night time. Bring the cacti in closer to let the fire glow light them a bit. Somebody perhaps warming themself by the fire or toasting something on a stick. Perhaps some moonlit hills or mountains and if possible the horses or jeep they road in on.

I agree with ddaydreams you should make it very very dark with the fire as the sole light source (I mean turn off sunlight and put in a radial light on the fire, naturally you would have to disable shadows for the fire mats =P). You could put some terrains as mesas in the background and also some Poser figures in cowboy hats near the fire. That's what I thought of at first when I saw it. If you make the radial light surface visible you could even make a nice lens glare effect. Just some thoughts hope this is helpful to you.

Turn off shadows? Cast, Receive and Self, are all off now but I prefered it before: Here it is with shadows off:

Turning off the sun didn't seem to have any effect whatsoever - in either image.

Does anyone know where to get "Ashen.gif" I think it's called that. Only when I downloaded baument's fire it asked for an ashen.gif... or ashen01_37898776.gif or whatever and I dunno where it went, if I ever got it in the download. I just wondered 'cos then I might play with a dying fire....

I sort of think it does myself - it makes the fire look hotter. Can anyone see the face in the flames? Looks a bit evil to me... ggg

Hmm sorry I wasn't a bit more clear I didn't mean turn off shadows for the logs, just for the fire because then the fire itself would cast shadows, and that would be a "no-no" (since fire's a gasish thing and doesn't really cast shadows). Looks much better with the shadows on for the logs though =P I think that the light should be bigger. You might consider using multiple lights at different positions within the fire, then toning down the intensity of specific lights; this would cause the glare from the lights to mimic the shape of the flame. Also you should put mesas in the background. They are easy to make, just use raise/lower dial in the terrain editor and raise the terrain until the middle is full white. Good luck!

I see the face, looks evil to me to. Faces and plants and animals often popup in fractal and procedral textures. Combining math with human perception is weird and wonderful. You might want to put some faint orange light on the closest cacti and then assuming no moon darken the left hill so it's just siluette.

Finally finished a big render on the camp fire and I can now see some odd lines. How did they appear and how the dickens do I get rid of them?

Okay, I'm trying to use metaballs to obstruct the dotted lines (don't think I can remove those lines, they are part of Baument's fire) but I'm using "Smoke Stack" from the clouds & fogs presets - and I don't like it. It looks wrong. Here's the spot render of that part:

And here's the wireframe of that same section, I've added the black spheres (smoke stack) and the pink sphere is another "Clay's Volumetric Fire", the pink one seems to have worked okay but I'm not sure - no I AM sure that the black sphere's aren't working. Help? Any ideas anyone?

My suggestion (on getting rid of the lines) would be to smooth them over in postwork... it's a messup that Bryce has, particularly with volumetric textures... LOL not sure if there are mesas in Australia (probably not). Personally, though, I avoid using the traditional Ambience features of Bryce. If you do use them, I would suggest setting the lower Ambience channel (the one labeled "Value"). This of course gives you detail in the shadows, as opposed to a solid color, which looks unrealistic IMHO. Of course the ideal situation is to do a Premium render and turn on True Ambience, along with soft shadows and any other options you care to have, but this only works properly if you have several days to spend rendering, especially with the volumetric fire! =P On the shadows: Yep, that's what I meant... you're right it looks much much better with shadows enabled. Uh... no comment. =P Good luck IMHO this looks roughly 300% better than it did at first! Oh, yeah, and sorry about the length of this, I talk too much =P

BTW (help! I can't shut up!!) I think that the lines are caused by intersections of the volume textures. Since you can see through the fire texture, and Bryce doesn't let you put two volume textures in the same "space". This means that you can see a "hole" where both object intersect. Correct me if I'm wrong (although I know this occurs, it just might not be the cause of your lines), and if ANYBODY has a good way to correct without postwork, I will have died and gone to heaven. Okay, I'm done. Really!
