Subject: Missing thumbnails in Library

DVTVFilm ( ) posted Wed, 04 May 2005 at 7:34 AM · edited Tue, 26 November 2024 at 2:20 PM

Hopefully there is an easy fix for this-- but can Poser6 (mac) generate thumbnails so I can visually see the offerings in my Library Pallet? Some of the products I've bought through Renderocity have them (like Mirrin from Valkerie). I can see all my choices Others, like ArtDamnation, as an example, don't. I can't see any choices. Very discouraging. Without being visually able to make a selection when using Poser pretty much makes buying anything a royal pain because the product becomes essentially unusable if one must constantly guess. (and the MAC Poser6 undo function does not work... in fact, cmd-Z launches a save window...) So, perhaps I'm overlooking something on some of these products. But there are no thumbnails that I can find. So, can I generate my own thumnails to make these products usable? Or can Poser autogenerate them? I'm new at this and thumbnails are not listed in the Poser Manual... regards-- TODD DVTVFilm

There is a limit to the number of thumbnails you can have in a library - not sure what it is in Poser 6 offhand. If the missing thumbs are only in the most densely populated library folders, it might be that. Second, if you generate your own thumbs by saving, you'll miss out on any information that was in the real thumbnail. Things like MAT poses won't work after re-saving because they're hacked, not a native Poser file: in fact anything hacked is likely to break. But really, anything you've bought should have thumbnails with it - if not, then basic marketplace quality control has failed. Check that the product is listed as suitable for Mac. If you've had to run it through Macconvertor, there may be issues (but I'm not an expert there). Ask the vendor - they should be able to help.

Ah-- so you mean that I must apply each option to -say V3 (apply each eye color choice to her head) and then save...? Wow-- what a bummer...

As far as MacConverter goes-- I don't have it ---and since it's not OS-X savvy it wouldn't work anyway. OS-9 is long gone-- and desn't even ship on MACs anymore... I don't think my Poser folder is overloaded---

"so you mean that I must apply each option to -say V3 (apply each eye color choice to her head) and then save...?" No, don't do that because MAT poses aren't re-saveable. Poser will overwrite the useful stuff with the figure pose, which isn't what you want. Although I think Poser 6 has ways of doing this, your best bet is to contact the merchant and ask searching questions. Did they actually have it tested by a Mac user? If it ought to work, it ought to be fixable.

That's interesting - what do Mac people do nowadays? It used to be easy for us Winders folk to just casually say "Oh, chuck it through MacConvertor - that'll fix it." Looks as if we may have to mend our ways. ;)

In my case, recently upgraded to Poser 6 from 4 and using Mac OS X, MacConverter works in the OS 9 "classic" enviroment. My workflow is when I d/l something (usualy in a Poser DL folder), I run it though MacConverter and then place the files/folders in the correct Runtime location(s). Then I quit MacConverter and the Classic enviroment. Then I start up P6 and use the newly installed thing(s). Works fine for me. No crashes or anything. Heck, I even ran a d/l folder with a hundred or so different props, poses and figures in it. MacConverter didn't blink or get weirded out at all. BTW, to speed things up, I created an alias of Mac Converter on my OS X desktop and am able to drag and drop folders on it, which starts up Classic and then MacConverter. Although MacConverter isn't an OS X-savvy program, it does the job and until a OS X native proggie comes along, it's the only solution we Mac users have, afaik. hth

I just went through this... :) As Mr. Mongo says, maconverter is still available and does work (there is in fact a link to it in the CuriousLabs FAQ pages for P6). Start it up and drag your props folder in. I set the various options to say "just make me a thumbnail, thanks" and it worked fine. It doesn't actually make the PNG files, but it does adjust the RSRs so that the next time Poser opens the folder, it will make all the thumbnails for you automatically. One thing that confused me on the Mac: if you happen to be a Terminal user, after conversion 'ls' shows all those RSR files as zero-length, which is not actually true, so don't worry. I also heard that the upcoming P6 SR1 is supposed to take care of this and will understand the PC-type RSR files. In the meantime, it's a manual process.

Alas--- none of my MACs have any OS-9 apps or Classic OS on them. As I mentioned, OS-9 it doesn't even ship from Apple anymore. And for some reason, freeware code-writers never seem to update their apps --I've been waiting fo 2 years for some of them who post on their website that an OS-X version is "coming..." 2 years is a long time to wait... I can only hope that anyone writing for POSER today understands that there is no upward marketability for their product if it's not compatible with the current OS-X user base. And now we're all going to be doing "tiger". So.. hang on to your old OS... You're among the fortunate with respect to this dilema. and -- yes, (for EnglishBob) I only purchase items from Renderosity that say that are MAC comaptible. The Mirrin Product workes perfectly. I hope the Damnation product is fixable. I'll email one of the authors and see... TD

OS-9 it doesn't even ship from Apple anymore. I think it does - they just don't install it by default. My dad just got a MacMini, and classic was available on the install disk as an extra. You just can't boot OS 9 any more. Not sure about Tiger, but there are compatibility problems with that anyway.

Jim X and fmorgan have written utilities for the missing thumbnail problem in X. And there is a big difference between classic emulation of OS 9.2.1 and a full install of OS 9.2.1. Maybe martian will move this to the Mac forum.

Correct me if I'm completely out here, but even tho Poser5 Mac won't convert the thumbnail rsrs, won't it use pngs if they are supplied? I have a memory of installing a recent Poser product without bothering to MacConverter first -- and I got normal thumbs.

kaveman ( ) posted Wed, 04 May 2005 at 4:25 PM

nomuse, is correct the Mac will use the pngs. We are fully file compatible with P5 and 6. It's only the old content with .rsr that we now have problems with. I just go with Mr Shruggy. It's almost a red flag, this product hasn't been maintained and is very old. Not that old is bad, just that it hasn't been checked and updated for the new versions of Poser.

DVTVFilm ( ) posted Wed, 04 May 2005 at 9:16 PM

Personally, I'm for no more Mr. Shruggy and a unified PC/Mac community. It can only benefit the designers who are trying to market their creations. As I mentioned, I purchased Damnation-- a beautiful work that I wanted to try-- but it's virtually useless if Mr. Shruggy is all I get to see. I guessing that it doesn't take too much work to include the MAC thumbs or PNGs in a package , especially if it's listed as a cross-platform product.. But then I'm not a designer, so i don't know if this is true. I hope the "SR1" mini-upgrade mentioned above for Poser6 is really in the works and on a fast track for us Mac end-users.
