Subject: OS problem OT?

I am using WindowsXP and I am still trying to set up my files for P6 but this "File in Use by Other Program" thing when I try to move or delete files is making me crazy. To clean things up I have to reboot. Is there any other way to deal with this?

You know, I'm not exactly sure what causes this, but on occasion I get files on backup CDs that give me the same message. So I'm curious to know if there is a workaround.

I have this about one out of two times I try to move or delete any folder I have been in.

Rebooting usually fixes this... then try to move or delete again.

This is an error with Window's memory refresh, the problem is their is only 2 ways to get around this that I know of, the previously mentioned reboot, and good old waiting. A lot of times the reboot is much faster the the waiting.

Yeah, I get this problem too. Be nice if there were a third option that was faster than a reboot. I tend to lose track of the folder I wanted to get rid of by the time XP goes through all the reboot stuff. And I've even had folders I still couldn't get rid of after the reboot.

Yeah, I am tired of having to make a list of things to fix up after the reboot. I didn't know that waiting worked... I have tried waiting a while but not long enough I guess.

unfortunitly this is something that I've noticed in the NT32 kernel since day 1 so it doesn't seem like microsoft is in a very big hurry to fix it (or they can't fix it.) See CL isn't the only one with nasty bugs that wont go away (props to the admins -- see we're trying to keep it in topic, a poser mention :P )

Here's a link to some suggestions for deleting locked files Use at your own risk, especially if you start killing processes. If you just want to delete the files when you reboot, get the MoveOnBoot utility: http://www.softwarepatch.com/software/moveonboot.html which should simplify that process and free you from having to remember what you wanted to delete. Microsoft has a similar utility but MoveOnBoot sounds easier to use.
