Subject: Seeking advice

Any idea's what problem I have please. Was trying to render a simple scene, just a figure with 1 prop, saving it had been a pain all week long. Kept getting out of memory etc. So today I thought well I'll just render it, added IBL's, tried to render, Poser freezed. Tried to cancel not work, lost mouse cursor, couldn't find re-boot button on my computer hehee, so I just switched the computer off. Turned it back on...moniter screen all black! ack! Any idea how to fix? Have I killed my hard disk? or the moniter or both LOL :D Sigh if I have to re-install everything :/ *Pulling my hair out here. I have a new computer with everything up to date just so I could use Poser 6 well.

Not sure how to fix this problem but next time, you might want to try Control_Alt_Delete and just end poser instead of turning off the computer with the reboot button.

Please let us know what has to be done to the poor thing. I formated my hard drive the other day. Seems some gremlins didn't want to install things in the right place and I just couldn't stand the disorganization. I'm weird about my files and where they are and how the system is set up.

Yeah, you may have wrecked the hard drive. Keep in mind, Poser uses a lot of memory when it runs, especially rendering. Since no one seems to have enough RAM to handle Poser, it writes to the "swap file" which is an area of the hard disk the OS uses to sort of fake RAM. Your drive was probably spinning hard when you hit the reset button, resulting in the spindle heads touching the disk platters. Yes, this sounds like techie mumbo jumbo, I am sure, but trust me when I say it is never a good idea to hit the reset button. It shouldn't even be there, but the manufacturers leave it for some strange reason. As Krissta said, use Alt-Ctrl-Del and stop the program that way. Better to lose an hour's work, than all of the files on your computer.

By the way Krissta, when you chased out the gremlins, did you send them to my house?

Kristta ( ) posted Thu, 12 May 2005 at 2:45 PM

Nope, I'm afraid my children still live here! I set up a folder for myself called "art" and one for the kids called "games". Well, some Harry Potter game and a Mah Jongg game somehow snuck out of that games folder....hmm, now which one of them was the one that wanted to play those particular games? I've got my system set up with passwords now so that the kids are not able to install anything. They also downloaded some stuff for The Sims and The Sims 2 that seemed to be floating all over my hard drive.

LOL...That is why my kids were saying "Dude, I got a Dell for Christmas." I told them, install whatever you want. You can surf where you want as long as you clear it with me first, and have fun. Now Daddy's computer waits for Daddy to come home!

We have a few small problems. We have three computers. My husband has a good job that provides all our needs and I get child support for two of my kids. BUT, that doesn't give us the money to have enough computers. I'm a stay at home mom now that there are five children. I can't teach them to get along and share if I am not willing to share. My husband's children are 8 and 14. My kids are 8 and 12. The baby is just 9 months. I have a few years before I get my computer back to myself. That's ok. They've been worth every formatted hard drive and every replaced stick of memory. I just hate that the 14 year old and I are out numbered so badly. We are the only girls!

=O God Bless you Kristta...I only have my two boys, 8 and 6. 3 computers. 1 for me, 1 for my wife, and 1 for the kids. I will remember to thank my lucky stars tonight ;-)

Update on my problem, have had to send it for repairs :/ I don't know how to specify my computer but it was bought around just before Poser6 was launched so that I have enough rams or memory thingy. Everything was running like a charm until this particualr picture I was working on. Oh sigh next time I will know better. or maybe just go back to trust worthy Poser5.

destro75 ( ) posted Fri, 13 May 2005 at 12:29 PM

Aishai, read my post above about your situation. It doesn't matter which version of Poser, or any software for that matter, you are using. If the hard drive is accessing itself, and you hit the power or reset button, chances are you are going to cause damage to the platters or heads. You want to treat your machine like a lover...Coddle it, treat it tenderly, love it with all of your heart...And be expectant of it turning around and telling you to shove off...

destro75 ( ) posted Fri, 13 May 2005 at 2:48 PM

I will give up the car before I give up the computer!

Kristta ( ) posted Fri, 13 May 2005 at 8:09 PM

There is an unprecedented number of cases of divorce because a spouse spent too much time online....funny isn't it...oops, better go...husband and kids are home!
